Water absorbent acrylic copolymers.

Abstract

Water absorbing, cross-linked acrylate resin copolymers are prepared by aqueous polymerization of (A) acrylic acid neutralized 70 to 100 mole percent for example with ammonia, and/or caustic alkali and/or an amine; with (B) styrene in an amount of 1% to 25% based on the weight of acrylic acid or acrylate; optionally (C) acrylamide in a mole ratio of 70 to 100 mole percent (A) to 30:0 mole percent (C); and (D) a water miscible or a water soluble polyvinyl monomer in an amount of .001 to 0.3 weight percent based on the total weight of (A), (B), (C) and (D).

13 claims: 11 independent, 2 dependent

  1. 1
A process for preparing a solid water absorbing resin, characterised in that it comprises mixing a monomer solution of (A) acrylic acid neutralized 70-100 mole percent;(B) styrene in an amount of 1% to 25% based on the weight of acrylic acid and (C) a water-miscible to water-soluble polyvinyl monomer in a combined concentration of (A), (B) and (C) of at least 30 wt. %;with water to form a mixed monomer solution and initiating polymerization of said monomers such that during polymerization, the exothermic heat of reaction is substantially the only heat energy used to accomplish polymerization, cross-linking and to drive off sufficient water to obtain a solid cross-linked resin having a water content of 15 percent by weight or less.
  2. 4
A process as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that monomer (C) comprises N,N-methylenebisacrylamide or N,N-methylenebismethacrylamide.
  3. 5
A process as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the mixed monomer solution contains 1 to 10 wt. % of an organic solvent based on the weight of monomers (A), (B) and (C).
  4. 6
A process as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the mixed monomer solution further contains an organic or non aqueous solvent having a boiling point of 40 to 150°C.
  5. 7
A process as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the neutralised acrylic acid is substantially in the form of potassium acrylate.
  6. 8
A process as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that a polymerization initiator is added in an amount of at least 0.5% total by weight of monomers (A), (B) and (C).
  7. 9
A process as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the water content of said cross-linked resin copolymer is not greater than about 10% by weight as recovered from the polymerized mixture, without an additional drying step.
  8. 10
A process as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised by the further step of pulverizing said cross-linked resin to form a powder.
  9. 11
A process as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that component (C) is acrylamide and is present in a mole ratio of (A):(C) in the range of 70:30 to 100:0, and in that the solution comprises component (D) a water soluble or water miscible polyvinyl monomer cross-linking agent in an amount of 0.001 to 0.3 percent by weight of (A) plus (B) plus (C).
  10. 12
A process as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that said monomer mixture including said initiator is deposited onto a support surface in sheet form for polymerization and cross-linking.
  11. 13
A method of absorbing water comprising producing a copolymer resin by a process as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised by thereafter contacting said resin with water to absorb water into said resin.
