Disk drive servo techniques.

Abstract

Shown is a disk drive arrangement with servo- mechanism for controlling (thin-film) head position, etc.; the servo having a disk face dedicated to servo tracks, rendered in "Quad" code, with special timing indicia to separate position indicia. A feature is a technique for deriving and using "offset" values for an array of servo tracks.

8 claims: 4 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
An apparatus for determining the radial position of a head relative to a rotary disc (D-SF) having a plurality of adjacent circumferential servo tracks (ST-0 to ST-3) recorded thereon;each servo track (ST-0 to ST-3) comprising a pair of adjacent servo information tracks (SP-0 to SP-3) shared with adjacent servo tracks (ST-0 to ST-3);each servo information track (SP-0 to SP-3) comprising a servo pattern aligned with a servo pattern in an adjacent servo information track (SP-0 to SP-3);said head being capable of interacting simultaneously with both servo information tracks (SP-0 to SP-3);said servo pattern in each servo information track (SP-0 to SP-3) comprising a dibit recording (P0 P1 P2 P3) operative to induce a position indicating pulse (Pod) in said head with magnitude proportional to the extent of interaction of the head with the servo information track (SP-0 to SP-3) and at a different time from the induction of a position indicating pulse (Pod) by the adjacent servo information track (SP-0 to SP-3);said apparatus being characterised by the dibit pattern (P0, P1, P2, P3) in each adjacent servo information track (SP-0 to SP-3) being of the same polarity as the dibit pattern (P0, P1, P2, P3) in the adjacent servo information track (SP-0 to SP-3) and preceded and followed by identically recorded equalizing pulses (S2 and S3, or S3 and 54, or S4 and 55, or S5 and SO) whereby all influences upon the magnitudes of position indicating pulses (Pod) are equalized.
  2. 5
An apparatus according to any of the preceding Claims wherein each servo information track (SP-0 to SP-3) comprises a repetetive circumferential sequence of servo patterns around said disc (D-SF).
  3. 7
An apparatus according to Claims 5 or 6 when dependent upon Claim 2 wherein said plurality of servo tracks (ST-0 to ST-3) are divided into radial zones (data zone, rezero zone, guardband 1, guardband 2) on said disc (D-SF) and wherein circumferential sequences of servo patterns (Guardband Pattern 1 , Guardband pattern 2) at selected circumferential locations around each servo information track (SP-0 to SP-3) are coded in their data portions (S0 + S1 + 52) to provide indication of the identity of the zone.
  4. 8
An apparatus according to any of the preceding Claims wherein said servo information tracks (SP-0 to SP-3) are of n different types, wherein said servo information tracks (SP-0 to SP-3) are arranged radially in sets, each set comprising one each of said n different types of servo information tracks (SP-0 to SP-3), wherein each servo pattern comprises n+1 circumferentially equispaced equalization pulses (S2, S3, S4, S5, S0) defining n dibit zones (gap S2-S3, gap S3 to S4, gap S4 to S5, gap S5 to S0), each type of servo information track having its dibit pattern (P0, P1, P2, P3) in its own respective dibit zone (gap S2 to S3, gap S3 to S4, gap S4 to S5, gap S5 to S0).
