Method and controller for controlling a mechanical manipulator.

Abstract

A system (14) for controlling a mechanical manipulator (10) in a laboratory environment employs a system of taught motions, attribute operators and procedure rules to simplify the programming task for scientists or engineers skilled in their own fields and not robotics.

15 claims: 4 independent, 11 dependent

  1. 1
A method for controlling a mechanical manipulator (10) using a controller (14) to cause named reusable motions of the manipulator( 10), said manipulator (10) defining an actuation point (52) characterized by storing in the controller (14) a procedure which includes an ordered sequence of motions, each motion including an ordered sequence of positions (1 to 6) of the actuation point (52) and a set of at least one motion attributes, each position including a set of coordinates;and executing said procedure.
  2. 4
The method of one of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that said storing step also stores a set of at least one position attributes for a position associated with the coordinate of said position, a set of at least one procedure attributes associtated with the motions, and set of at least one coordinate attributes, wherein said procedure, motion, position and coordinate attributes modify one another according to a predetermined precedence rule for controlling the motions.
  3. 13
l3.The method of one of claims 10 to 12, characterized in that said motion attribute operator causes said motion to be performed relative to the current actuation point (52) of the manipulator (10).
  4. 15
A controller (14) for controlling a mechanical manipulator (10) to cause named reusable motions of objects, said manipulator (10) defining an actuation point (52), said controller (14) characterized by means (16) for storing a procedure which includes an ordered sequence of motions and a set of procedure attributes, each motion including an ordered sequence of positions of the actuation point (52) and a set of motion attributes, each position including a set of coordinates and a set of position attributes, wherein said procedure, motion, position and coordinate attributes modify one another according to a predetermined rule for controlling the motions;and means (22) for executing said procedure.
