EP0240280A2

Quick release joints and structures incorporating same.

Abstract

A quick release joint ( 10 ) for interconnecting structural modules such as table or shelf units ( 54 ) in stacked configuration comprises a ball and socket type joint constructed and/or arranged to provide structural integrity in the assembled condition of the joint . In one embodiment abutment surfaces ( 46, 48 ) on the ends of the ball and socket joint elements make face-to-face contact and thereby hold the joint in a fixed configuration . In another embodiment , three or more joints at the corners of a triangle provide structural integrity . In a further version , abutment surfaces on the structures joined themselves prevent pivotal movement of the joint. In all cases the joints are assembled merely by compression and disconnected by application of tension.

  1. 1
A ball and socket type joint ( 10 ) comprising first ( 12 ) and second ( 14 ) joint elements adapted to be connected and disconnected by compression and tension applied to said joint , said first joint element comprising a joint base member ( 16 ) adapted to be secured to or formed integrally from an article to be joined , a joint shoulder element ( 18 ) carried on said base member and projecting therefrom , and a waist portion ( 20 ) connecting said shoulder element to said joint base member , and said second joint element comprising a joint base member ( 34 ) adapted to be secured to or formed integrally from an article to be joined , and a joint receptor element ( 16 ) adapted to receive and hold said shoulder element , said receptor element comprising spaced retainer members ( 37 ) which are spaced and positioned and constructed to permit said shoulder element to be inserted between said retainer members by applying said compression between said joint elements so as to cause resilient deformation of said receptor element and/or of said shoulder element during said insertion followed by retention of said shoulder element by engagement of said retainer members with said waist portion and/or the portion of said shoulder element adjoining the waist portion , and said retainer members also permitting subsequent withdrawal of said shoulder element by applying said tension between said joint elements ;characterised by     said base members ( 16,34 ) each being formed with an abutment surface ( 46,48 ) , said abutment surfaces being positioned for face-to-face contact each with the other in the assembled condition of the joint , and the abutment surfaces each being substantially planar and facing generally lengthwise of the axis ( 50 ) of insertion of the shoulder element into the receptor element , said shoulder element ( 18 ) and its associated waist portion ( 20 ) projecting outwardly from the abutment surface ( 46 ) of said first joint element ( 12 ) , and said receptor element ( 36 ) being formed in or located closely adjacent to the abutment surface ( 48 ) of said second joint element , the arrangement being such that upon insertion of said shoulder element into the receptor element and retention of the shoulder element thereby said abutment surfaces make face-to-face contact each with the other thereby defining the retained position of the shoulder element ( 18 ) relative to the receptor element ( 36 ) and preventing pivotal movement of said joint elements in said retained position whereby the ball and socket type joint ( 10 ) provides a joint which is connectible and disconnectible by the application of compression and tension respectively while also providing the joint with structural integrity in the connected condition of the joint .
  2. 2
A ball and socket joint ( 10 ) characterised by abutment means ( 46,48 ) to prevent pivotal movement of the joint elements in the assembled condition thereof.
  3. 11
A ball and socket type joint characterised by joint elements providing at least three shoulder elements fixed thereto and at least three corresponding receptor elements disposed at the corners of a triangle whereby relative pivotal movement of the joint elements in the assembled condition of the joint is prevented.
  4. 12
A structure comprising two structure units which can be connected and disconnected by means of at least three joints mounted on the structure elements , the structure having structural integrity in its connected condition , characterised in that said joints comprise ball and socket type joints ( 10 ) disposed at the corners of a triangle whereby relative pivotal movement of the joint elements in the assembled condition of the joint is prevented .
  5. 13
A structure comprising two structure elements ( 64,66 ) which can be connected and disconnected by means of at least one joint ( 70 ) mounted on the structure elements , the structure having structural integrity in its connected condition , characterised in that said joint comprises a ball and socket type joint ( 70 ) and said structure elements themselves comprise abutment surfaces ( 68 ) which in the connected condition of the structure elements are held by the ball and socket type joint in abutting engagement and when so engaged themselves prevent relative pivotal movement of the structure elements about the joint.
