EP0240000A2

Apparatus for separating electromagnetic waves.

Abstract

A trichromatic beamsplitter (56) consists of composited dichroic beamsplitter plates (60,62) that separate a projected image into its three color components with spacial as well as spectral precision. A three linear array photosensor comprises a monolithic sensor having three parallel photodiode arrays spaced precisely to accept the color component images of the trichromatic beamsplitter (56).

21 claims: 9 independent, 12 dependent

  1. 1
An apparatus for separating electromagnetic waves having wavelengths, characterized by:a first transparent layer (6 0 );a first filter (50) contiguous with the first side of said first transparent layer (60) for reflecting said electromagnetic waves having said wavelenghts within a first range;and a second filter (52) contiguous with the second side of said first transparent layer (60) for reflecting said electromagnetic waves having said wavelenghts within a second range.
  2. 11
An apparatus as in one of the preceding claims, characterized by a multiplicity of transparent layers (60,62);a multiplicity of filters (50,52,54) located on said transparent layers (60,62) wherein said filters reflect different ranges of electromagnetic wavelengths;and wherein said transparent layers (60,62) with said filters (50,52,54) are mounted together.
  3. 12
An apparatus as in one of the preceding claims, characterized in that photosensor means (11) are aligned to receive said electromagnetic waves reflected from each of said filters (50,52,54).
  4. 13
An apparatus as in one of the preceding claims, characterized by a lens (6) to focus said electromagnetic waves onto said filters (50,52,54);and an illumination source (22) spectrally tailored to the output device (18,11).
  5. 15
An apparatus as in one of the preceding claims, characterized in that said transparent layer (60,62) and said transparent extension means (1) is made from glass or plastic.
  6. 16
An apparatus as in one of the preceding claims, characterized by a means (1) for equalizing the optical path lengths of said electromagnetic waves.
  7. 17
An apparatus as in one of claims 1 to 10 or 16, characterized by a means (11) for detecting said reflected electromagnetic waves.
  8. 19
An apparatus as in one of claims 12 to 18, characterized in that said photosensor means (11) are photosensor arrays (12,13, 14).
  9. 21
A method of manufacturing an apparatus for separating electromagnetic waves comprising the steps:forming a thick glass substrate (70);applying a first filter (54) to said substrate (70);attaching a thin glass layer (62) to said filter (54);grinding said glass layer (62);polishing said glass layer (62);and applying a second filter (52) to said substrate (70).
