Method and apparatus for optically detecting surface states in materials.

Abstract

A periodic localized excitation is generated at the surface of the sample (22) with an intensity modulated pump laser beam (34). A probe laser beam (52) is directed to the surface of the sample (22) and changes in the probe beam (52) which are in phase with the modulated pump frequency are detected by a photodetector (62) connected to a processor (64) also coupled to the modulator (36) of the pump beam (34). Periodic changes in the optical reflectivity of the surface of the sample (22) induced by the pump beam (34) are detected by measuring the corresponding modulations in the reflected power of the probe beam (52). Time dependence of the probe beam modulated reflectance signal is monitored. An evaluation of defect surface states is then made by investigating the time dependence of the magnitude and/or phase of this probe beam modulated reflectance signal.

  1. 1
A method of evaluating surface states in a sample comprising the steps of:a. generating a localized periodic excitation at the surface of the sample;b. directing a probe beam of radiation within the periodically excited region of the sample;c. detecting periodic changes in the probe beam after it has interacted with the sample;and d. monitoring the variation as a function of time of the detected periodic changes in the probe beam to evaluate the defect surface states of the sample.
  2. 13
An apparatus for evaluating surface states in a sample comprising:means (30, 36, 42) for inducing a periodic, localized excitation at the surface of the sample;probe means (50) for emitting a beam of radiation;means (40, 42) for directing the beam from the probe means within the periodically excited region on the sample surface;means (62) for detecting the periodic changes in the probe beam after it has interacted with the sample;and     means (64) for processing the variation as a function of time of the periodic changes measured by the detecting means (62) to evaluate the defect surface states of the sample (22).
  3. 14
An apparatus for evaluating surface states in a sample:a pump laser (30) for emitting a beam of radiation;means (36) for intensity modulating the pump beam;probe means (50) for emitting a beam of radiation;means (42) for focusing the intensity modulated pump beam (34) and the probe beam (52) to a localized spot on the surface of the sample (22) such that the pump beam(34) periodically excites the sample surface and the probe beam (52) is specularly reflected;means (62) for detecting the periodic changes in the power of the reflected probe beam;and     means (64) for processing the variation as a function of time of the detected periodic changes in the power of the reflected probe beam to evaluate the defect surface states in the sample (22).
