Distributed electronic mailbox system.

Abstract

A distributed electronic mailbox system comprises a plurality of terminals (12) on a common telephone line (10) to which each terminal can be intermittently connected. One of the terminals (12), if no terminal is found acting as a network control terminal (12), assumes that function. The network control terminal (12) interrogates each terminal (12) in tum to see if it has a message to send. Each interrogated terminal (12) sends a confirmatory message on to the telephone line (10) if it has a message to send and commences sending blocks of text message alternating with repeat confirmatory messages which suppress the polling activity of the network control terminal (12). If a terminal detects in a text message its own identifier address it knows the text message is destined to be received by itself and sends out a return message on to the telephone line (10). If the message originating terminal (12) does not receive the return message after it has provided the destination terminal identifier address in the text message it knows the destination terminal is not at that moment connected to the telephone line (10) and abandons its attempt to send the text message. Destination terminals receiving a text message check the received text message blocks by comparing two identically sent data words in the text message block. If the data words are not the same as one another the error detecting terminal (12) provides an error message on the telephone line (10) to which the message sending terminal (12) responds by re-sending the last provided text message block.

13 claims: 6 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A data communications network comprising a plurality of terminals each having access to a common communication channel;any one out of said plurality of terminals being operable to act as a network control terminal;where, any terminal, not detecting the presence of another terminal in said network acting as the network control terminal, is operative to commence operation as the network control terminal.
  2. 6
A network according to any of the preceding Claims wherein each terminal, in the course of receiving a text message, is operative to monitor the text message for transmission errors and, if an error is detected, is operative to provide an error indication block on said common communication channel;and wherein that terminal which is in the course of sending the text message is operative to monitor the common transmission channel after provision thereon of each text message block and, if an error indication block is detected, is operative to repeat the last provided text message block.
  3. 10
A network according to Claims 7,8 or 9 wherein said address portion of an interrogating message block comprises the identifier address of that terminal which is to be interrogated to discover if it has a text message to send;and wherein said data portion of an interrogating message block comprises a code indicative of interrogation.
  4. 11
A network according to Claims 7 to 10 wherein said address portion of a confirmatory message block comprises the identifier address of the terminal which has commenced receiving the text message;and wherein the data portion of a confirmation message block comprises a code indicative of confirmation of commencement of receipt of a text message.
  5. 12
A network according to any of Claims 7 to 11 wherein said address portion of an error indicating message block comprises the identifier address of the terminal whereat the error has been detected;and wherein said data portion of an error indicating message block comprises a code indicative of a data error having been detected.
  6. 13
A network according to any of the preceding Claims wherein said common communication channel is a public telephone network.
