  1. 1
A method for modulating and demodulating a carrier signal with data representing discrete elements of a pictorial representation, comprising the steps of:assigning a separate modulating symbol to each of said discrete elements, said modulating symbols being a modification of at least two phases and one of a plurality of amplitude levels and frequency characteristics of said carrier signal;modulating said carrier signal with said modulating symbol;and demodulating said modulated carrier signal to recover said data representing said discrete elements wherein each said element is a pixel having a color of one of a spectrum of colors and further comprising the steps of: assigning the pixels having colors at the respective ends of said spectrum to said symbols with the highest amplitude levels, a first color at a first end of said spectrum being assigned to a first phase and a second color at a second end of said spectrum being assigned to a second phase;assigning decreasing adjacent amplitude levels at said first phase to colors extending from said first color to a third color proximate the middle of said spectrum;and assigning decreasing adjacent amplitude levels at said second phase to colors extending from said second color to a fourth color proximate the middle of said spectrum.
  2. 4
Apparatus for modulating and demodulating a carrier signal with data representing discrete elements of a pictorial representation, comprising:means for assigning a separate modulating symbol to each of said discrete elements, said modulating symbols being a modification of at least two phases and one of a plurality of amplitude levels and frequency of said carrier signal;means for modulating said carrier signal with said modulating symbol;and means for demodulating said modulated carrier signal to recover said data representing said discrete elements wherein each said element is a pixel having a color of one of a spectrum of colors and said apparatus further comprises means for assigning the pixels having colors at the respective ends of said spectrum to said symbols with the highest amplitude levels, a first color at a first end of said spectrum being assigned to a first phase and a second color at a second end of said spectrum being assigned to a second phase and for assigning decreasing adjacent amplitude levels at said first phase to colors extending from said first color to a third color proximate the middle of said spectrum and for assigning decreasing adjacent amplitude levels at said second phase to colors extending from said second color to a fourth color proximate the middle of said spectrum.
