Piezoresistive pressure transducer.

Abstract

A low cost piezoresistive pressure transducer utilizing premoulded elastomeric seals and adapted for automatic assembly, and a method of producing the transducer. A piezoresistive stress sensitive element 32 in the form of a diaphragm of semiconductor material having a thickened rim is held at its rim between a pair of premoulded elastomeric seals 26, 27 in a thermoplastic housing 11, 16, 20. Electrical connections 14a, 14b with external circuitry are made with strain relief jumpers which connect conductive regions on the element outside the seals to conductors which pass through the housing wall.

9 claims: 7 independent, 2 dependent

  1. 1
A pressure transducer assembly comprising a diaphragm (32) of semiconductor material having piezoresistive means formed thereon, and a housing (11) in which the diaphragm is mounted so as to form a fluid tight divider between two pressure chambers (19, 21) and having a pressure port to at least one of the chambers, characterized in that the housing has two inner end surfaces (17, 21) each configured to form a seal seat (24, 25);there are two elastomeric sealing rings (26, 27) each mounted between a respective seal seat and the central region of the diaphragm to form the two pressure chambers;and the diaphragm has its piezoresistive means - (34, 35) disposed in its central region and electrically coupled (36) to its periphery, with connecting leads (14a, 14b) being connected through the housing to its periphery (37).
  2. 2
An assembly according to Claim 1 characterized in that the housing comprises a side wall (11) and at least one cover (17) forming an inner end surface of the housing and sealed to the side wall.
  3. 3
An assembly according to Claim 2 characterized in that the side wall and cover or covers are formed of thermoplastic material and are ultrasonically welded together.
  4. 4
An assembly according to either of Claims 2 and 3 characterized in that there are two covers each provided with a pressure port.
  5. 5
An assembly according to either of Claims 2 and 3 characterized in that there is one end cover provided with a pressure port, and the other side of the diaphragm has a glass plate (48) bonded to it to form a reference vacuum chamber, the elastomeric sealing ring (27") on that side sealing against the glass plate.
  6. 6
An assembly according to any previous claim characterized in that the connecting leads follow an indirect route (Figure 4) between the outside of the housing and the periphery of the diaphragm.
  7. 7
An assembly according to any previous claim characterized in that the connecting leads include strain relieving portions (44).
  8. 8
An assembly according to any previous claim, characterized in that each sealing raing is swaged - (28, 29) into its seal seat.
  9. 9
A method of manufacturing an assembly according to any previous claim characterized in that a strip of lead frames is formed (Figure 4), a series of diaphragms are mounted on respecfive lead frames of the strip, a series of housings are formed around successive lead frames, and the assemblies are then separated from each other.
