Process for the preparation of an aqueous dispersion of copolymeric latex polymer.

Abstract

A process for the preparation of an aqueous dispersion of copolymeric latex polymer which may display enhanced thickening efficiency in aqueous solutions and compositions. The process comprises emulsion-polymerising alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated monomer in an aqueous medium, wherein at least some portion of the polymerization occurs in the presence of 3% to 20% by weight based on total monomer of at least one in-process additive having a solubility parameter having the valve of from between 1.64 x 10-2 (Jm-3) ½ to 2.46 x 10 (Jm-3)½. The monomer comprises at least one copolymerizable alpha, beta-mono- ethylenically unsaturated surfactant comonomer, at least one copolymerizable alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated carbonoxylic acid comonomer, and at least one monomer selected from nonionic copolymerizable (C2-C12) alpha. beta-ethylenically unsaturated monomer.
