Code converting system and method for band compression of digital signals.

Abstract

(57) An input code in the form of a prediction error signal is applied to a terminal (1) connected to a variable length encoder (2) whose output is applied by way of a multiplexer (3) to a buffer memory (7). The contents of the memory are read out at constant rate to a transmission line (9). A decision making circuit (4) detects when the input code is zero and an AND gate (5) provides a selection signal to the multiplexer (3) when the input code is zero and a controller (8) indicates that the contents of the buffer memory (7) are below a predetermined level. In the presence of the selection signal the multiplexer (3) selects the output of a run length encoder (6), connected to the output of the AND gate (5) instead of the output of the variable length encoder (2).

3 claims: 2 independent, 1 dependent

  1. 1
A code converting system comprising first converting means (2) for converting an input code resulting from the encoding of multi-level signals in a prescribed manner into a variable length code, second converting means (6) for converting the input code into a run-length code, selector means (3) for selecting either the variable length code or the run-length code in response to a selection signal, a memory (7) for storing the output of the selector means and supplying it to a transmission line (9) at a constant speed, and generating a signal indicating the memory occupancy, and control means (8, 4,5) providing the selection signal to control the selector means (3) to output the variable length code when the memory occupancy is below a prescribed level.
  2. 3
A code converting method, comprising the steps of converting an input code resulting from the encoding of multi-level signals in a prescribed manner into a variable length code, converting the input code into a run-length code, selecting either the variable length code or the run-length code, storing the selected code and supplying it to a transmission line at a constant speed, generating a signal representative of the memory occupancy by counting the quantity of code stored therein, and effecting the said selection so as to output the variable length code when the memory occupancy is below a prescribed level.
