Multilayer plastic articles.

Abstract

The present invention provides a multilayer plastics structure characterised by a laminate of at least one layer of a high gas barrier polymer and at least one layer of a blend of at least one propylene based polymer and at least one linear low density polyethylene wherein the total amount of the linear low density polyethylene is equal to or less than about 30 percent by weight of the blend. Such structures may be formed into containers.

  1. 1
A multilayer plastics structure characterised by a laminate of at least one layer of a high gas barrier polymer and at least one layer of a blend of at least one propylene based polymer and at least one linear low density polyethylene wherein the total amount of the linear low density polyethylene is equal to or less than about 30 percent by weight of the blend.
  2. 2
A multilayer plastics structure characterised by a laminate of a pair of outer layers and a centrally located core layer wherein the centrally located core layer includes at least one high gas barrier polymer and the outer layers are each a blend of at least one propylene based polymer and at least one linear low density polyethylene with the total amount of the linear low density polyethylene being equal to or less than about 30 percent by weight of the blend.
  3. 3
A multilayer plastics structure characterised by a laminate of a pair of outer layers, a pair of intermediate adhesive layers and a centrally located core layer wherein the outer layers are formed from a blend of at least one propylene based polymer and at least one linear low density polyethylene wherein the total amount of the linear low density polyethylene is equal to or less than about 30 percent by weight of the blend;the intermediate adhesive layers are formed from at least one olefinic hydrocarbon polymer;and the centrally located core layer is formed from at least one high gas barrier polymer.
  4. 4
A structure according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the propylene based polymer is polypropylene homopolymer.
  5. 5
A structure according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the propylene based polymer is a propylene-ethylene copolymer including about 2 to 5 mole percent ethylene copolymerized with the propylene.
  6. 6
A structure according to any of claims 1 to 5, wherein the linear low density polyethylene has a density of less than about 0.93 grams per cubic centimetre and a melt index of less than about 10 grams per ten minutes.
  7. 8
A structure according to any of claims 1 to 7, wherein the linear low density polyethylene is equal to about 20 percent by weight of the said blend.
  8. 9
A structure according to any of claims 1 to 8, wherein the high gas barrier polymer is an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer.
  9. 10
A container formed from the structure according to any of claims 1 to 9.
  10. 11
A composition characterised by a blend of a propylene based polymer which is a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, and a linear, low density polyethylene wherein the total amount of the linear low density polyethylene is no more than about 20 percent by weight of the blend.
  11. 14
A composition according to any of claims 11 to 13, wherein the linear low density polyethylene has a density of less than about 0.93 grams per cubic centimetre and a melt index of less than about 10 grams per ten minutes.
  12. 16
A composition according to any of claims 11 to 15, wherein the linear low density polyethylene is equal to about 20 percent by weight of the blend and the copolymer has a density of about 0.89 to 0.9 grams per cubic centimetre and a melt index of less than about 30 grams/10 min.
