Method for manufacturing a composite ceramic structure.

Abstract

A method of producing a composite ceramic structure which avoids problems caused by joining two pre-formed members. The method comprises: preparing a formed ceramic piece (1) which constitutes a portion of the composite ceramic structure; positioning a rubber mold (4) having a molding surface defining the remaining portion of the structure in contact with a joining part of the piece (1) from which the remaining portion of the composite ceramic structure extends; covering an exposed surface of the piece (1), and at least an end of the rubber mold adjacent to the said joining part with an elastic member (3); filling the rubber mold (4) with a mass (8) of ceramic powder which contacts the said joining part, the powder which contacts the said joining part, the powder being of material substantially identical to that of the formed piece (1); applying a static hydraulic pressure to the assembly of the formed piece (1) and powder in the rubber mold (4), thereby compacting the ceramic powder and integrating the compacted mass of ceramic powder with the formed piece (1) and firing the integral piece into the composite structure.

  1. 1
A method of producing a composite ceramic structure, comprising the steps of:preparing a formed ceramic piece which constitutes a portion of said composite ceramic structure;preparing a rubber mold having a molding surface defining the remaining portion of said composite ceramic structure;positioning said rubber mold in contact with a joining part of said formed ceramic piece from which said remaining portion of the composite ceramic structure extends;covering an exposed surface of said formed ceramic piece, and at least an end of said rubber mold adjacent to said joining part of the formed ceramic piece, with an elastic member;filling said rubber mold with a mass of ceramic powder such that the mass of ceramic powder contacts said joining part of said formed ceramic piece, said mass of ceramic powder being substantially identical with a ceramic material of which said formed ceramic piece is formed;applying a static hydraulic pressure to an assembly of said formed ceramic piece and said mass of ceramic powder in said rubber mold, thereby compacting said ceramic powder in said rubber mold and integrating the compacted mass of ceramic powder with said formed ceramic piece into an integral piece;and firing said integral piece into said composite ceramic structure.
  2. 4
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein said composite ceramic structure is made of a ceramic material selected from the group consisting of Si3N4, SiC, Zr 0 2 , Al 2 O 3 , cordierite, and substances which give, by firing thereof, Si 3 N 4 , SiC, Zr0 2 , Al 2 O 3 or cordierite.
  3. 5
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein said composite ceramic structure is a turbocharger rotor, and said formed ceramic piece is a vane portion of the turbocharger rotor.
  4. 6
A composite ceramic structure obtained by molding a mass of ceramic powder integrally with a previously prepared formed ceramic piece, and firing an assembly of the mass of ceramic powder and the ceramic piece into an integral piece, characterized in that a first portion corresponding to said formed ceramic piece comprises a protrusion defining a joining interface between said first portion and a second portion corresponding to said mass of ceramic powder, said protrusion protruding from said first portion into said second portion.
