Optical star coupler and method for manufacturing the same.

Abstract

@ An optical star coupler having a biconically tapered optical star coupler suspensively inserted in a protection tube and the method for manufacturing the same are disclosed, and the manufacturing method is that an optical fiber bundle is inserted into a protection tube such as hollow glass tube, then the optical fiber bundle is twisted and pulled while it is indirectly heated through the protection tube, thereby to form a twisting, fusing and pulling portion, and both ends of the protection tube are sealed with an adhesive agent to fix the optical fiber bundle to the protection tube. This optical star coupler can be constructed so as to be connected in tandem without any splicing. The optical star coupler of the present invention. naturally in the case of an optical star coupler using multi-mode optical fiber, particularly in the case of one equally divided optical star coupler using single-mode optical fiber, also provides low insertion loss, less power deviation and low manufacturing cost.

8 claims: 5 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
In a biconically tapered optical star coupler having a twisting, fusing and pulling portion in the central portion of bound plural optical fibers, and optical star coupler wherein at least said twisting, fusing and pulling portion is suspended in a protection tube.
  2. 3
In a biconically tapered optical star coupler having a twisting, fusing and pulling portion in the central portion of bound n (2 or more) optical fibers, an optical star coupler wherein two optical star couplers are juxtaposed, in which optical star couplers at least said twisting, fusing and pulling portion is suspended in a protection tube, one optical fiber having no splicing portion is shared in said two optical star couplers and said shared one optical fiber goes out from one protection tube and enters the other protection tube in a state in which it returns, so that the ends of n optical fibers come at one end of each protection tube and the ends of (n-1) optical fibers come at the opposite end of said each protection tube.
  3. 4
A method for manufacturing an optical star coupler comprising the steps of i) suspensively inserting an optical fiber bundle consisting of plural optical fibers into a protection tube, ii) providing twisting, indirect heating through the protection tube and pulling to said optical fiber bundle thereby to form a twisting, fusing and pulling portion in the optical fiber bundle in said protection tube, and iii) sealing both ends of said protection tube with an adhesive agent thereby to fix said protection tube and suspended optical fiber bundle.
  4. 5
A method for manufacturing an optical star coupler comprising the steps of a) suspensively inserting an optical fiber bundle consisting of a plural optical fibers into a protection tube, b) providing twisting to said optical fiber bundle, c) providing heating through the protection tube to a predetermined portion of said optical fiber bundle thereby to form a twisting and fusing poriton, d) pulling said optical fiber bundle while providing heating through the protection tube to the vicinity of the central portion of said optical fiber bundle thereby to form a twisting, fusing and pulling portion, and e) sealing both ends of said protection tube with an adhesive agent thereby to fix said protection tube and suspended optical fiber bundle.
  5. 8
A method for manufacturing an optical star coupler comrising the steps of A) juxtaposing two protection tubes, respectively inserting an optical fiber bundle consisting of n (2 or more) optical fibers into said two protection tubes, and providing a construction wherein one shared optical fiber having no splicing is included in said two optical fiber bundles in a state in which it returns, thereby for making n optical fiber ends come at one end of each protection tube and (n-1) optical fiber ends come at the opposite end, B) providing twisting to said optical fiber bundles, C) heating said protection tubes and providing twisting, fusing and pulling to the optical fiber bundles in said protection tubes, and D) sealing the ends of said protection tubes to fix said protection tubes and said optical fiber bundles.
