Signal synthesizer.

Abstract

A signal synthesizer for providing output signals having predetermined relationship to each other with respect to phase or frequency comprises two signal channels, each channel having a signal source (101;102) and a mixer; (110;111) for combining the output signals (103;104) of the signal sources with a reference signal to produce synthesized signals. The output of the signal source of one of the two channels can be coupled to the mixers of both channels. Thus, the synthesized signals can be swept over a frequency range with a precise phase or frequency offset between the two signals.

9 claims: 3 independent, 6 dependent

  1. 1
A signal synthesizer for providing output signals having predetermined relationship to each other with regard to phase or frequency, comprising:- a first signal source (101) for providing a first signal, - a common reference signal source (107) for providing a reference signal, - a first mixer (110) having one input coupled to the first signal source and a second input coupled to the common reference signal source for providing a first synthesized signal in response to the signals at its inputs, - a second signal source (102) for providing a second signal, - a second mixer (111) having one input coupled to the second signal source and a second input which can selectively be coupled either to the common reference signal source or to the output of the first signal source (101) for providing a second synthesized signal in response to the signals at its inputs, - a common control unit (204) coupled to at least one of the signal sources for controlling the phase or the frequency of the output signals of the signal sources such as to establish a selectable relationship with respect to phase or frequency between the first synthesized signal and the second synthesized signal.
  2. 4
A signal synthesizer as in any of the preceding claims, characterized by a phase detector (303) for deriving a phase difference signal corresponding to the phase difference between the first synthesized signal and the second synthesized signal and for providing a calibrated phase between the first and the second synthesized signals.
  3. 8
A signal synthesizer as in any of the preceding claims, characterized by sampling means included in the phase detector for internally sampling the first and second synthesized signals (108,109) to calibrate the phase between the first and second synthesized signals.
