Liquid crystalline polymer substrates with orthogonal molecular orientation.

Abstract

In one embodiment this invention provides a polymeric nonlinear optical medium comprising a thin substrate of wholly aromatic thermotropic liquid crystal polymer having a uniaxial orthogonal molecular orientation.

    A thin substrate comprising a wholly aromatic thermotropic liquid crystal polymer having a uniaxial orthogonal molecular orientation.

    A thin substrate in accordance with claim 1 in the form of an optically clear film which exhibits nonlinear polarizability prperties.

    A thermotropic liquid crystal polymer having a wholly aromatic chemical structure containing recurring units of the formula where X is a divalent radical selected from estero, amido, azomethino, azo, azoxy,etheno and ethyno groups, and Ar is a divalent aromatic radical selected from phenylene, naphthylene and diphenylene groups, and aromatic radicals corresponding to the formula:where Y is a carbonyl, sulfono, oxy or thio group, characterised in that the polymer is a nonlinear optical medium in the form of a film having an external field-induced stable uniaxial orthogonal molecular orientation.

    A polymeric nonlinear optical medium in accordance with claim 3 wherein the film has a thickness of 10-500 microns.

    A polymeric nonlinear optical medium in accordance with claim 3 or 4 wherein the uniaxial orthogonal orientation of polymer molecules is within 10 degrees of perpendicular to the film plane.

    A polymeric nonlinear optical medium in accordance with any of claims 3-5 wherein the thermotropic liquid crystal polymer is a wholly aromatic polyester.

    A polymeric nonlinear optical medium in accordance with any of claims 3-5 wherein the thermotropic liquid crystal polymer is a copolymer of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid.

    A laser frequency converter device with a polymeric nonlinear optical component characterized in that such component comprises a thin medium of wholly aromatic thermotropic liquid crystal polymer having a uniaxial orthogonal molecular orientation.

    A laser frequency converter device in accordance with claim 8 wherein the liquid crystal polymer is a copolymer of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid.

    An article of manufacture having a surface area coated with a self-adhering polymer film characterized in that the film comprises a wholly aromatic thermotropic liquid crystal polymer having a uniaxial orthogonal molecular orientation.

    An article of manufacture in accordance with claim 10 wherein the surface area is metal.

    An article of manufacture in accordance with claim 10 wherein the liquid crystal polymer is a copolymer of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and 6-hydroxy-2-napththoic acid.
