Data transmission system.

Abstract

The present system is a data transmission system wherein a central station having a plurality of router elements 20 exchanges data via a bus 60 which is connected to each router. Further, each router is connected to the next adjacent router via a plurality of parallel lines 70 forming a ring configuration. Each router transmits a control message token around the ring indicating availability to receive data. As the token is transmitted around the ring each router can examine the token and change it to indicate that data will be transmitted to its router during the next cycle. Once a control message is accepted, no other router around the ring can accept the token during that cycle. Simultaneously with the transfer of the token around the ring during the cycle, data is transferred on the bus as indicated by the token of the previous cycle. Each line of bus 60 can carry an independent serial block of data between any two routers 20.

  1. 1
A central station, characterized by a pLuraLity of input/output formatters connected to it, each formatter having a plurality of devices coupled thereto, for exchanging data between formatters, the central station comprising a plurality of routers each connected to a serial data bus which includes a corresponding plurality of Lines, and each router being connected to the next adjacent router in cyclic sequence via a pLuraLify of parallel Lines thereby forming a ring, each router controlling the exchange of data in response to a corresponding control message token transmitted by each router via the ring during one cycle to indicate transmission of data from a formatter on its corresponding serial data bus Line during the next cycle and for each router, a corresponding buffer memory for coupling data onto .and off the serial data bus in response to the control message token.
  2. 2
A central station according to CLaim 1, characterized in that each router comprises:a) Logic means for processing the control message token;and b) interface means for co-ordinating the data exchange with the buffer in response to the control message token.
  3. 3
A central station according to CLaim 2, characterized in that the Logic means comprises:a) means for initiating the control message token;b) means for interrogating the control message token to determine whether the control message token indicates that the router is available for receiving data during the next cycle;c) means for modifying the control message token to indicate whether data is to be transmitted to the router initiating the control message token and further to indicate which buffer is to be transmitting data during the next cycle;d) decoder means for decoding the control message token at the start of the next cycle to select the serial data bus Line corresponding to the buffer which is to transmit data during the next cycle, thereby enabling receipt of data;e) means for receiving the control message token from the ring;and f) means for transmitting the control message token onto the ring.
  4. 4
A central station according to CLaim 3, characterized in that the interface means comprises:a) means for identifying the router initiating the control message token;and b) means for indicating which of router data is available.
  5. 5
A central station according to CLaim 4, characterized in that the interface means further comprises:means for updating the indicating means, being initialized at the beginning of each frame, each frame comprising a predetermined number of cycles.
  6. 6
A central station according to CLaim 5, characterized in that each buffer memory comprises:a) data memory means for storing data received from the formatter in a Linked List format;b) first buffer means for temporarily holding data received from the formatter;c) processor means for controLLing the transfer of data into and out of the data memory means in response to at Least one control signal;and d) router interface Logic means for identifying the router which is to receive data during the next cycle.
  7. 7
A central station according to CLaim 6, characterized in that each buffer memory means further comprises:storage means for storing information to indicate which router data is avaiLabLe, the information being Loaded into the means for indicating at the beginning of each frame.
  8. 8
A central station according to Claim 7, characterized in that each buffer memory means further comprises:second buffer means for temprorarily storing data received from a first formatter to transmit said data to the corresponding formatter.
