Process for forming a graded index optical material and structures formed thereby.

Abstract

A method of depositing on the surface of a substrate (10) a layer (12) of a selected material having continuous gradations of the refractive index (n) in a predetermined pattern (16). The substrate (10) is exposed to two vapor phase reactants, reacting when stimulated by radiation to produce the selected material, and the relative proportion of reagents is modified in a predetermined continuous sequence to produce continuous gradations in the stoichiometric composition and in the refractive index (n) of the deposited layer as a function of the thickness (14). It is also possible to produce changes in the refractive index and / or the thickness across the horizontal surface of the substrate (10) in combination with the change of the refractive index as a function of thickness. The optical diffraction elements formed by this method include various optical filters and reflective optical coatings.

A process for depositing on the surface of a substrate a layer of a chosen material in which the index of refraction of said layer varies in a pre¬ determined and continuous pattern as a function of thickness, comprising the steps of: a) providing said substrate;b) exposing said substrate to first and second selected reactants in the vapor phase which chemically interact to produce said chosen material, which deposits as said layer on said substrate;and c) varying the relative proportions of said first and second vapor phase reactants in a predeter¬ mined and continuous sequence to produce continuous gradations in the stoichiometric composition of said chosen material deposited, as a function of the distance of said material deposited above said surface of said substrate, to thereby produce a predetermined variation in said index of refraction of said layer as said function of thickness and in said continuous and pre- determined pattern.
