Method of regenerating a deactivated catalyst.

Abstract

A deactivated reforming catalyst comprising a type L zeolite containing a Group VIII noble metal may be regenerated and have enhanced dispersion by a method involving contacting the catalyst with oxygen and water at elevated temperatures, contacting the catalyst at elevated temperatures with a source of chlorine such as HCI or Cl2, and preferably oxygen and water, contacting the catalyst at elevated temperatures with oxygen and optionally water, and contacting the catalyst at elevated temperatures with hydrogen and optionally water to reduce the catalyst. Preferably the noble metal is platinum.

  1. 1
A process for re-activating a coke containing type L zeolite catalyst containing at least one Group VIII noble metal which comprises:(a) removing a substantial portion of the coke;(b) dispersing the noble metals on the surface of the zeolite;and (c) removing excess chlorine from the catalysts and stabilizing the noble metal.
  2. 7
A process for re-activating a coke containing type L zeolite refining catalyst containing at least one Group VIII noble metal which comprises removing a substantial portion of the coke, dispersing one or more of the noble metals on the surface of the catalyst, and removing excess chlorine from the catalyst and stabilizing the catalyst which comprises:(a) subjecting the deactivated catalyst at a temperature from about 380 to 540°C in the presence of oxygen, hydrogen, or an inert gas and from 0 to 10% by volume water;(b) treating the catalyst at a temperature from 400 to 530°C in the presence of a gaseous stream comprising oxygen, a source of chlorine and 0 to 10% by volume water;(c) subjecting the catalyst to a temperature from about 400 to 540°C for a period of time less than that required to substantially agglomerate the noble metal in the presence of a gaseous stream comprising oxygen.
  3. 27
A process for re-activating a coke containing zeolite L reforming catalyst containing at least one Group VIII noble metal which comprises:(a) removing a substantial portion of the coke by contacting the catalyst with 0.2 to 15% by volume oxygen at a temperature from about 380 to 450°C;(b) dispersing the noble metal on the surface of the zeolite by contacting the catalyst with a gaseous stream comprising 0.2 to 15% by volume oxygen, and 0.05 to 1.0% by volume HC1 or C1 2 at a temperature from about 400 to 530°C;(c) removing excess chlorine and stabilizing the catalyst by contacting the catalyst with a gaseous stream comprising 0.2 to 15.0% by volume oxygen at a temperature from about 400 to 540°C;(d) and thereafter reducing the catalyst in the presence of hydrogen;and in which steps (a) through (d) are conducted in the presence of about 0.5 to 5.0% by volume water.
