Shock inducing pod for causing flow separation.

Abstract

A wing-mounted pod (30) is provided to prevent an unstable increase in the pitching moment of an aircraft with flapping wings due to increasing speed and angle of attack. This invention is used on an aircraft having the wing wings of the type of unstable non-linear increase in pitching moment due to loss of lift at the outer wing (16) over an angle of attack predetermined to a high Mach number. For an airplane that has a single bridging motor (26, 29) on each wing, the nacelle (30) is placed along the intersection of the upper surface of the wing (12) and the inner side of the wing. spacer (26) for mounting the motor. The nacelle (30) prevents an increase in the pitching moment by inducing the formation of a shock (S) in the air flowing on the upper surface of the inner fender (14) at the same angle d attack to which the outer wing (16) loses its lift. The shock causes a localized separation of the flow on the inner wing thus preventing the increase of the pitching moment which the plane would otherwise suffer.
