  1. 1
A method for controlling an automatic transmission system for devices having a throttle-controlled engine (12), an operator actuated throttling control means (18) and a transmission (10) having a plurality of gear ratio combinations selectively engageable between a transmission input (14) and a transmission output shaft (16), said transmission input shaft being operatively connected to said engine, said transmission system comprising, an information processing unit (30) having means for receiving a plurality of input signals including a first input signal (18) indicative of the position of said throttle controlling means and a second input signal (20) indicative of the rotational speed of said engine, said processing unit including means for processing said input signals in accordance with a program to provide a predetermined gear ratio for a given combination of input signals and for generating output signals whereby said transmission system is operated in accordance with said program, and means (26) associated with said transmission effective to actuate said transmission (10) to effect engagement of one of said gear ratio combinations in response to said output signals from said processing unit, characterized by:sensing the presence or absence of operator selected stable operation of the device by causing said processing unit (30) to process at least one of said first and second input signals in accordance with predetermined logic rules;and modifying said program by lowering the engine speed at which an upshift will be commanded in response to said processing unit sensing the presence of operator selected stable operation of the device defined by the throttle position remaining at greater than zero percent of maximum throttle position and below a predetermined reference throttle position value for at least a predetermined time interval.
  2. 9
The method of any of claims 1 to 8 characterized in that said predetermined time interval is at least 20 seconds.
  3. 11
The method of any of claims 1 to 10 characterized in that the processing unit (30) includes means to reset the timing means whenever said stable operation ceases to be sensed during the predetermined time interval.
  4. 12
An automatic transmission system for devices having a throttle-controlled engine (12), an operator actuated throttling control means (18) and a transmission (10) having a plurality of gear ratio combinations selectively engageable between a transmission input shaft and a transmission output shaft (16), said transmission input shaft being operatively connected to said engine, said transmission system comprising, an information processing unit (30) having means for receiving a plurality of input signals including a first input signal (18) indicative of the position of said throttle controlling means and a second input signal (20) indicative of the rotational speed of said engine, said processing unit including means for defining a first program and for processing said input signals in accordance with the program to provide a predetermined gear ratio for a given combination of input signals and for generating output signals whereby said transmission system is operated in accordance with said program, and means (26) associated with said transmission effective to actuate said transmission (10) to effect engagement of one of said gear ratio combinations in response to said output signals from said processing unit, characterized in that:said processing unit includes control logic for defining a second program resulting in effective modification of said first program by setting a lower engine speed at which an upshift will be commanded in response to said processing unit sensing operator selected stable operation of the device;and said stable operation being designated by the control logic and by said processing unit sensing that an operator-selected throttle position has remained above zero and below a predetermined reference for a predetermined time.
  5. 17
The automatic transmission system of any of claims 12 to 16 characterized in that said processing unit will effectively modify the first program by setting for the second program an increased engine speed at which downshifts are commanded simultaneously with lowering the engine speeds at which upshifts are commanded.
