Frequency synthesizer.

Abstract

@ It is required to generate a constant frequency 1 MHz signal from a higher frequency signal Ø2 which may have any one of a plurality of higher frequencies which are non-integral multiples of 1 MHz. Groups of Ø2 pulses are counted off in a counter (85) and the group counts follow a recurrent pattern such that the mean frequency of the output pulses is 1 MHz. A latch (80) stores a signal identifying which frequency Ø2 is being employed and ROMs (80, 81,82 and 83) determine the recurrent pattern by selecting two different numbers for the group counts, the total number of groups in the recurrent cycle and which of these groups employ the high count and which employ the low count. For example, a signal Ø2 with a period of 350 ns is counted down to 1 MHz using 3 counts of 3 pulses followed by 1 count of 2 pulses followed by 3 more counts of 3 pulses.

9 claims: 9 independent, 0 dependent

  1. 1
A frequency synthesizer for providing an output pulse signal having the same pseudo-constant predetermined pulse frequency in response to any one of a plurality of input pulse signals having respective different pulse frequencies, characterised by first means (85) which count off groups of pulses of the input signal (0) and provide an output pulse of the output signal (lMHz) for each such group, and second means (80,81, 82,83,84) which establish in respect of each input frequency a corresponding recurrent pattern of counts for the said groups such that the mean frequency of the pulses in the output signal is the said predetermined frequency.
  2. 2
A frequency synthesizer in accordance with claim 1, characterised in that in respect of each said pattern, the number of input pulses in each said group is one of two selected integers identified as a high integer or as a low integer.
  3. 3
A frequency synthesizer in accordance with claim 2, characterised in that the selected integers are consecutive integers.
  4. 4
A frequency synthesizer in accordance with claim 2 or 3, characterised in that the second means includes means (80,81) responsive to the selected input signal forproducing a high/low signal which identifies when the selected integer is the high integer.
  5. 5
A frequency synthesizer in accordance with claim 4, characterised in that the means producing the high/low signal is a read-only-memory (81).
  6. 6
A frequency synthesizer in accordance with claim 4 or 5, characterised in that the second means further includes integer selection means (83) responsive to the high/low signal and to the selected input signal for providing coded signals representing the successive input signal group counts, and the first means includes a counter (85) responsive to the coded signals to produce the output pulses.
  7. 7
A frequency synthesizer in accordance with claim 6, characterised in that the integer selection means (83) is a read-only-memory.
  8. 8
A frequency synthesizer in accordance with claim 6 or 7, characterised in that the second means supplies the successive groups of input pulses in a recycled fashion having a preselected period, the second means including means (82,84) responsive to the selected input signal for producing a recycle signal having the preselected period;the means (81) producing the high/low signal being further responsive to the recycle signal for providing the high/low signals in accordance with the preselected period.
  9. 9
A frequency synthesizer in accordance with claim 8, characterised in that the means producing the recycle signal .comprises a read-only-memory (82).
