Production of metal flake.

Abstract

in making metal flake powder by wet ball milling a powder of the metal (e.g. nickel or stainless steel) in the presence of a lubricant in a mobile liquid system, the use of an organometallic substituted alcohol as the lubricant gives flake having improved reflectivity and/or electrical conductivity. The lubricant is preferably a titanate, e. g. isopropyl tri (dioctylpyrophosphato) titanate.

16 claims: 5 independent, 11 dependent

  1. 1
A process for producing metal flake by wet ball milling a powder of the metal in the presence of a lubricant in a mobile liquid system, characterised in that the mobile liquid system contains as lubricant an organometallic substituted alcohol that is at least partially soluble in the liquid system, in a small amount effective to inhibit welding of the metal particles.
  2. 12
Stainless steel flake powder, characterised in that it has an average thickness of less than 1 µm and, in the dried condition, a specular reflectance of greater than 53%.
  3. 13
Nickel flake powder, characterised in that it has an average thickness of less than 1 µm, and, in the dried condition, a specular reflectance of greater than 39%.
  4. 14
Nickel flake powder, characterised by a surface resistivity in the dried condition equivalent to less than 1 ohm/sq, based on the conductivity tests described herein.
  5. 15
Nickel flake powder, characterised by a surface resistivity in the annealed condition equivalent to less than 1 ohm/sq, based on the conductivity tests described herein.
