EP0091827A2

Device for reversibly occluding a body duct.

Abstract

A device and method for reversibly occluding a body duct (41), such as the vas deferens, to prevent fluid flow therethrough. The device comprises two spaced flexible plugs (12, 14) connected to each other by a flexible connecting member (16), such as a suture or other filament. The plugs are of size so as to be snugly received by the lumen (44) of the body duct at implantation without exerting excessive pressure therein. The device is preferably implanted in the duct by insertion of each plug through a respective puncture hole (46) in the wall (42) of the duct, with a portion of the connecting member being retained externally of the duct to prevent migration of the plugs.

16 claims: 9 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A device for occluding a body duct, said device comprising plugging means (12, 14) of cross sectional size sufficient to block the lumen (44) of said duct (40) when positioned therein, characterised in that said plugging means comprises two plugs and flexible connecting means (16) interconnecting said plugs to limit the axial spacing between said plugs when the latter are positioned in a body duct.
  2. 4
A device according to any of the preceding claims, wherein each of said plugs has a tapered, e.g. rounded, end (20) and a blunt base (22), the respective blunt bases facing each other when said plugs are interconnected.
  3. 5
A device according to any of the preceding claims, wherein each said plug includes a tool-receiving opening (23) in one end thereof.
  4. 7
A device according to any of the preceding claims, wherein each of said plugs is of a smooth, flexible, nonporous material.
  5. 8
A device according to any of the preceding claims, wherein each said plug has a length of from 0.5 cm to 10 cm, preferably from 2 cm to 5 cm, and a diameter of from 0.2 mm to 8 mm, preferably from 0.5 mm to 2.5 mm, and said bases are spaced from each other by from 0.5 cm to 10 cm, preferably from 1 cm to 2 cm, when the flexible connecting means is fully extended.
  6. 9
A method of obtaining reversible male sterilization by occlusion of the vas deferens (40) to block sperm passage therein, comprising providing in the wall (42) of the vas deferens at least one aperture (46) communicating with the lumen (44) of said vas deferens lumen and the exterior of said vas deferens, and inserting into said lumen through said aperture plugging means (12, 14) of substantially luminal cross sectional size, characterised in that said plugging means consists of first and second flexible plugs connected by flexible connecting means, and in that said plugs are positioned in axially spaced apart relation in said lumen, at least a portion of said connecting means extending through said at least one aperture between said plugs externally of said vas deferens after insertion of said plugs such that said plugs are retained in said spaced apart relation in said lumen.
  7. 12
A method of occluding a body duct (40) comprising internally blocking the lumen (44) of said duct by positioning plugging means within said lumen, characterised in that said plugging means;comprises a plurality of plugs (12, 14) positioned within said lumen at a plurality of axially spaced positions, said plugs being connected by flexible connecting means (16) secured to and extending between associated pairs of plugs.
  8. 13
A method of occluding a body duct (40) having a lumen (44), said method comprising the step of positioning plugging means in said lumen, characterised in that said plugging means comprise two plugs (12, 14), each of substantially luminal cross sectional dimension, positioned at two axially spaced positions to block flow through said lumen, said plugs being connected to each other by flexible connecting means (16) secured to and extending between said plugs, said connecting means extending through at least one aperture (46) in a wall of said duct intermediate said plugs.
  9. 16
A method according to any of claims 12 to 15, including the further step of wrapping said body duct surrounding said plugs with a material which does not cause necrosis of body tissue to prevent dilation of said body duct around said plugs.
