System and method for controlling and monitoring blood or biologic fluid flow.

Abstract

A system and method are disclosed for controlling blood flow or flow of biologic fluid in an artificial organ or extracorporeal blood circuit. Selected parameters relating to blood flow are sensed and used to automatically optimize blood flow while assuring proper and safe operation. Utilized in conjunction with a reciprocating dialyzer apparatus (21), the system controls blood flow into and out of the dialyzer apparatus by controlling pressure on a slurry around the dialyzer membrane package. Slurry pressure is controlled by an actuator (16), such as a bellows pump, the pumping action of which is controlled by an electric motor (21), which motor, in turn, is electrically controlled by a control unit (29) which receives sensed indicators of blood flow, pressure and/or motor current. Blood contamination is also monitored for assuring safe operation of the dialyzer apparatus.

  2. 9
A system for controlling biologic fluid flow in a reciprocating dialyzer apparatus wherein fluid flow into and out of the apparatus is through a single conduit, which comprises:fluid flow effecting means for causing fluid flow in reciprocal directions through the single conduit of the reciprocating dialyzer apparatus;monitoring means connected with the fluid flow effecting means and providing an output indicative of at least one preselected parameter thereof;and processing means connected with the monitoring means and the fluid flow effecting means to receive the outputs therefrom and, at least partially responsive thereto, providing an output to the fluid flow effecting means to automatically control fluid flow through the single conduit in reciprocal directions in a predetermined pattern.
  3. 12
A system for controlling blood flow in a reciprocating dialyzer apparatus, which comprises:means defining a blood chamber having a pressure responsive variable volume;pressure means connected with the blood chamber defining means for establishing the volume of the blood chamber;conduit means communicating with the blood chamber for blood flow therethrough to and from the blood chamber due to a change in volume of the blood chamber;first and second monitoring means for monitoring the rate of flow through the conduit means and for monitoring pressures exerted by the pressure means, and providing electrical signal outputs indicative thereof;programming means for receiving the electrical signal outputs from the monitoring means and establishing a program to effect cycling of blood flow through the conduit means to and from the blood chamber, the programming means providing a control signal output;and control means receiving the control signal output from the programming means and responsive thereto controlling the pressure exerted by the pressure means.
  4. 15
A method for controlling biologic fluid flow, which comprises:sensing the rate of flow of biologic fluid in a path;sensing the amount of force necessary to produce fluid flow in the path;determining optimum flow rates for the fluid in the path in view of the sensed rate and sensed amount of force necessary to produce the flow rate;and controlling.the flow rate to maintain flow at said optimum flow rate.
  5. 17
A method for controlling blood flow in a reciprocating dialyzer apparatus, which comprises:establishing a blood chamber having a pressure responsive volume;providing a pressure source capable of controlling the volume of the blood chamber;introducing blood into and withdrawing blood from the blood chamber through a single conduit;monitoring the blood flow in the conduit;monitoring the pressure exerted on the blood by the pressure source;establishing a program for cycling the blood into and out of the blood chamber under the control of the pressure source;modifying the program when the monitored blood flow and pressure are outside predetermined ranges;and using the modified program to vary the pressure of the pressure source to effect cycling of the blood into and out of the blood chamber.
