27 claims: 9 independent, 18 dependent

  1. 1
A control device for controlling a multiple unit locomotive system having a plurality of individual locomotive units each having high and low throttle positions and a plurality of discrete throttle positions between the high and low positions for normal operation of the locomotive system, said control device including means (66a-69a 76a-79a) for setting a predetermined set speed of the locomotive system and sensing means (23, 24) for sensing the actual speed of the locomotive system;and characterised by control means (10) operable in response to the presence of a differential between the actual and set speeds to automatically and sequentially vary the throttle positions of the individual locomotive units between the throttle settings which correspond to a fuel saving mode of operation in a manner to effect substantial conformity of the actual speed with the set speed.
  2. 6
A control device as set forth in any preceding claim, wherein the locomotive system includes a train line wire (13) interconnecting the locomotive units, said control means (10), being operable to send control signals for controlling the output power of each locomotive unit in both directions along said train line wire (13).
  3. 7
A control device as set forth in any preceding claim, including:means providing a measurement of the acceleration of the locomotive system;and means (614-621, 634-644) sensitive to the acceleration of the locomotive system for adjusting the output power of the locomotive units in a manner to compensate for acceleration in effecting substantial conformity of the actual speed with the set speed.
  4. 12
A control device as set fourth in claim 2,3 or 4, including:an air brake system for the locomotive system;a pressure switch (17) for the air brake system associated with each locomotive unit, the pressure switch (17) for the lead unit having one position and the pressure switches for the trail units having another position;and means (145) for detecting the position of each pressure switch to distinguish the lead unit from the trail units.
  5. 19
A method of controlling a multiple unit locomotive system having a lead locomotive unit and a plurality of trail units each having high and low throttle positions and a plurality of discrete throttle positions between the high and low positions for normal operation of the system, said method being characterised by the steps of:sensing the actual speed of the locomotive system with a desired speed thereof;transmitting a set of control signals from the lead unit to each trail unit when a differential exists between the actual speed of the locomotive system;comparing the actual speed of the locomotive system and the desired speed thereof;utilizing said control signals to adjust the throttle positions of selected trail units sequentially between the throttle settings which correspond to a fuel saving mode of operation in a manner to substantially conform with the actual speed of the locomotive system with the set speed thereof.
  6. 23
A method as set forth in any of claims 19 to 22, wherein the locomotive system includes a train line wire interconnecting the locomotive units in the system, said transmitting steps comprising transmitting the sets of control signals and the acknowledgement signals in both directions on the train line wire.
  7. 24
A method as set forth in any of claims 19 to 23, wherein the control signals have one amplitude and the acknowledgement signals have a different amplitude to distinguish them from the control signals.
  8. 25
A method as set forth in any of claims 19 to 24, wherein each set of control signals corresponds to a different trail unit, and including the step of preventing each trail unit from utilizing control signals other than the control signals in the set corresponding to the trail unit.
  9. 26
A method as set forth in any of claims 19 to 25, including the steps of:obtaining a measurement approximating the acceleration or deceleration of the locomotive system;adjusting downwardly the throttle positions of selected locomotive units between the high and low throttle settings thereof in a manner to substantially conform the actual speed of the locomotive system with the desired speed thereof when the desired speed is greater than the actual speed and the deceleration is less than a preselected level;adjusting upwardly the throttle positions of selected locomotive units between the low and high throttle settings thereof in a manner to substantially conform the actual speed of the locomotive system with the desired speed thereof when the desired speed is less than the actual speed and the acceleration is less than a preselected level;and whereby the acceleration and deceleration of the locomotive system influence adjustment of the throttle positions of the selected units between the high and low throttle settings thereof in conforming the actual speed of the locomotive system with the desired speed thereof.
