Authentic human growth hormone (hGH) is prepared by an enzymatic process from amino acid 11 extended hGH of the formula X-hGH wherein X is a linear amino acid sequence with an even number of peptide residues, of which at least one of the amino acids Asp and Glu is found in the di-peptide component which is linked directly to the N-terminus of hGH, the first amino acid counted from the N-terminus being different from Lys and Arg, all other odd amino acids being different from Pro, Lys and Arg, and all the amino acids are different from Pro, and that the degradation occurs with the enzyme dipeptidylaminopeptidase I (EC 3.4.14.1). The product obtained is obtained in high yield and can be isolated in a pure state by conventional purification methods
