Waste matl re-use from carpet mfr - by converting into flowable form, mixing with additives, extruding/degassing and granulating
Abstract
Waste accumulating in carpet mfr. is recovered/re-used by comminuting it to give a flowable matl.; adding stabilisers, seeding agents, metal soaps and pigments; charging to an extruder to de-gassing; and granulating so as to obtain thermoplastics malt. suitable for injection-moulding. The waste malt. may be in the form fo lng strips resulting from the trimming of the carpets, waste yarn, or thermo-plastics dust as formed during shearing of the carpets. The waste malt. may be rendered flowable by cutting or grinding, and may be initially stored, in a loose condition, and then compacted with the aid of a cold screw between a pair of grooved discs, one of which rotates at high speed. This causes the wate matl. to melt through frictional heat. The resulsting melt is expelled in blobs of non-uniform sizes.

The invention relates to a process for the recycling of waste resulting from the production of carpet, in particular carpet production, for the production of thermoplastics. The invention relates to a process for the recycling of waste resulting from the manufacture of carpet, in particular carpet manufacture, for the production of thermoplastics. in which by means of per se known extruding a waste product is returned to a processable granule state.
Such processes are well known in the chemical fiber industry. The waste accumulating here, such as Anspinnmengen, lower grades, waste yarns, regenerated again and returned to granules for the thermoplastic injection molding sector.
This is easily possible in this sector, since the resulting waste without significant impurities occur.
In contrast, it is customary in the field of carpet production to store the waste in landfills. By this measure, the environment is very heavily burdened because the plastic waste either not or only very rotting.
Furthermore, the unloaded residue must be distributed and compacted by tracked vehicles. In the process, long and contiguous waste strips wrap around the drive axles and cause longer standstill and repair times. On the other hand, such bulk materials are so elastic that they zurückfedem again despite the compression and thus the desired compression is not maintained.
From the above, known method in the chemical industry and the disadvantages of the previous practice, it is an object of the invention to minimize the environmental impact of not or only very rotting waste of the carpet industry as low as possible or completely avoided and a recyclable product in the To create plastic area.
The above object is achieved in that the waste occurring during carpet manufacture are converted into a free-flowing millbase and stabilizers, crystallization accelerators, metal soaps and pigments added to a known degassing extruder and by means of this according to a known method in a granulate for Production of thermoplastic injection molded parts are transformed.
Since the above waste is to be made available to an extrusion process, it is still in the nature of the invention that the waste in carpet production, in particular the Teppichbodenhers, occurring waste by Zerscnneiden and crushing in the flowable state or in dusty design from a storage chamber in which they are in a loosened state, by means of a cold snail between two larger, grooved metal discs are pressed, with a disc rotating very rapidly, and the resulting friction causes melting to result in the discharge of unevenly sized pieces of melt to the outside.
The advantages of using a waste recycling process are, in particular, that it proposes a possibility of greatly reducing the environmental impact of landfills of a specific nature and of making the waste available to a new product. Another advantage is the reduction in the cost of waste destruction.
An example of the invention is explained in more detail below: Known in the production of carpets waste in the form of very long strips, which are caused by cutting the two-sided leading edges, or in the form of shear dust - by using a shearing machine - and of course waste yarns.
The resulting shear dust is mixed in mixers for several minutes - whereby different sized particles are merged-. The finished and well-dispersed mixture is fed via a special pre-metering unit of known type continuously to an extruder.
The peculiarity of the extruder is that it has an extremely steep screw feed area to accommodate the very voluminous contents.
In carpet production, both velor and loop fabric are treated with commonly used shearing machines. The resulting dust is sucked by fans from the shearing machine and collected in separate dust chambers. The fiber length of the shear dust can exceed or fall below 1 mm.
The carpet-shear dust waste heated and melted in the extruder leave the nozzle head in the form of strands, as is generally customary, are drawn through a water bath and then cut in a granulator with rotating knives.
The thus treated waste can then be used for the production of thermoplastic injection molded parts.
