System for the transmission of utility quantities through a two- or three-wire line
Abstract
A two wire/three wire utility data communications system for remotely reading utility meter registers. In the two wire version, a hand-held reading unit is inductively coupled over two wires via a port located remotely from a meter register. Alternatively, a meter interface unit (MIU) may be connected directly to the register via three wires. Each register includes one or more wheel position encoders. An AC interrogation signal is applied by the reading unit to encoder circuitry at the meter which powers the circuitry and causes the position of each encoder wheel to be read. In the two wire mode, register display information (e.g. the current meter reading) is transmitted back to the reading unit by varying the load (impedance) presented by the register side of the circuit. This causes a corresponding variation of the amount of current drawn from the reading unit. The current-modulated signal is decoded by the reading unit and converted into a register reading. The system can also operate in a three wire mode and read older fourteen wire encoded registers. Other features include remote programmability of register characteristics, the ability to interrogate multiple registers which share a common data bus, verification of encoder wheel positions before accepting a reading, real-time flow rate/leak detection, pulse output, and the capability of reading compound meters (i.e. meters having two registers to separately measure high/low flow rates).

The invention relates to the field of data transmission and data transmission from utility meters via two- or three-wire lines.
SVS
Prior art
Systems for the transmission of utility values are used for data transmission. on consumption from meters such as electricity meters, gas meters or water meters to remote reading units.
In these systems, each meter includes an encoder that converts the consumption information displayed by a mechanical or electronic counter associated with the meter into a form that can be sent by line and podx to a remote reader. One such encoder for use with meter counters is described in U.S. Patent No. 4,085,287. As shown in this patent, a series of conductive pads and a movable contact are associated with one or more counter wheels. The position of the movable contact relative to the conductive surfaces indicates the position of the counter wheel and thus the quantity displayed by the counter. Upon request from the remote reader, the counter status information is sent in three wires to the remote reader. Data is sent from the encoder to the remote sensor.
As explained in U.S. Patent No. 4,085,287, the remote unit may be portable and include a plug for insertion into a socket connected to a three-wire data line. The sensor can thus comprise a portable reading unit and remotely read the status of the individual meter counters by connecting it to the appropriate socket.
It is also known to connect nomadic meter counters, in the embodiment disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 4,085,287, to a device generally known as a meter contact unit or MIU. Such an arrangement is disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 4,852,152. In this arrangement, each of the coded counters is permanently connected to one I.1IU. The I.'IU includes an interface that allows it to respond to interrogation signals coming through a telephone line. The power plant can call the MIU via a special telephone exchange device to wake it up. The OTU interrogates one or more connected coded counters and sends the meter status data over the telephone line to the power plant.
An alternative to the three-wire utility coded value transmission system disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 4,085,287 is a two-wire inductively coupled utility value transmission system as contained in U.S. Pat. TT3 Nos. 4,782,341, 4,758,836, 4,652,877 and 4,463,354. In this type of system, the portable reading unit is equipped with an induction loop or coil that corresponds to a similar loop or coil located in a socket. The coil in the socket is connected by two wires to the meter counter. The coil of the reading unit is brought close to the coil in the socket and an alternating interrogation signal is sent to the coil connected to the meter. This alternating signal is transmitted to the remote meter counter via the inductive coupling of the two coils to each other. mThis interrogation signal is used to excite the encoded counter of the inverter, which sends back the meter reading by modulating the AC carrier signal. The AC carrier signal may be generated inside the meter encoder or it may be a direct AC interrogation signal.
Although these reading systems have gained widespread use, they have several shortcomings and limitations. While inductively coupled two-wire reading systems allow data transfers between the coded counter of the meter and the portable reading unit, this arrangement is unsuitable for conventional contact units that require a direct three-wire connection to the coded counter for data transmission. In addition, both two- and three-wire reading systems using portable reading units require the use of a separate connected socket for each coded counter to be read. This is a disadvantage of the sensor, especially in situations where a large number of coded meters are to be read in a small geographical area. This can occur in high-density office buildings and homes /e.g. with rented or owned flats, tower houses, etc./, where each unit is measured separately. In this situation, the reader would be exposed to the time-consuming task of connecting and disconnecting a portable reading unit in the tens of several tens or even hundreds in order to read all coded counters individually. Using a separate oro socket for each coded counter also probably increases installation costs.
In addition, each utility / e.g. gas, water, electricity / traditionally has its own sockets for reading relevant? meters. These quantities often use different data formats, so it is impractical to read all meters of different utility quantities with a single sensor.
It would therefore be very beneficial if public services had a data transmission system to read the values of utility meters, which could be used for both two-wire inductive coupling and three-wire conductive coupling, and which could also be adapted for connection to MIUs for purposes of central meter reading. It would also be very advantageous to have a meter reading system where a number of remote counters could be connected together by a single group of lines to a single socket to allow all of these meters to be read by a portable reader without having to have separate sockets and connections to each. Finally, it would be of great benefit if the reader or MIU were able to automatically recognize and read different types of meters and meters from different manufacturers.
The essence of the invention
These desirable features are provided by the present invention, which relates to a system for transmitting data between a utility meter or the like with a line with at least two conductors. The system includes a remote sensor / programmer connected to the lines, the sensor / programmer having a signal generator and a data storage area.
An encoder is linked to the meter counter, which indicates the amount of quantity measured by the meter and displayed by the counter. The encoder responds to
- 4 interrogation signals, generated by a signal generator, and sends a power-assisted data signal indicating the value of the quantity measured by the meter and transmits this data signal by wiring to a remote sensor / programmer. This sensor / programmer stores the data signal indicating the value in the data storage area.
The interrogation signal is modulated by the encoder so that the current flowing between the remote sensor / programmer and the encoder changes when the remote sensor / programmer and the encoder are connected by two wires. If at least three wires are connected, the interrogation signal acts as a clock and this clock? the signal is used by the encoder to generate an encoded data signal. This data signal indicates, among other things, the amount of useful value measured by the meter.
In this way, the system for transmitting utility measurements according to the invention can be adapted for both two- and three-wire methods.
In operation in two-wire mode, the remote sensor / programmer is preferably inductively coupled to the encoder. The encoder includes circuitry for changing the impedance according to data representing the amount measured by the meter, thereby modulating the current flowing between the encoder and the remote sensor / programmer according to this data.
In the three-wire mode, the remote sensor / programmer and the encoder are electrically connected directly by at least three wires, of which the first wire transmits clock signals generated by the sensor / programmer, the second wire transmits data signals from the encoder and the third represents electrical ground. The clock signals are sent by the encoder / programmer to the encoder. The encoder includes circuitry for generating an encoded data signal that represents the amount measured by the meter
In an embodiment of the invention, a series of encoders may be connected by either a two- or three-wire line in parallel to a common encoder / programmer. The sensor / programmer sequentially selects the individual encoders. While each encoder has its own identification number or address /e.g. sequence number /, in a sequential dialing arrangement, each encoder may be assigned a counter selection number from a group of such numbers, e.g., one of the numbers 1 to 99. This counter selection number would be unique to one encoder relative to all other encoders connected to the same twin three-wire transmission line or bus. However, the numbering scheme of the counters could be repeated for other groups of coded counters that are electrically separated. In this arrangement, the sensor / programmer only addresses each number for selecting a counter in a divided group of numbers /e.g. proceeds by numbers 1, 2, 3, .. 99 /. When an encoder detects that a query from a sensor / programmer contains its selection number, it wakes up and sends its meter status data back to the sensor / programmer. When no data signals are transmitted from the encoders, the encoder / programmer assumes that the states of all coded counters have already been read. Thus, the sensor / programmer does not have to know how many encoders are connected to one line, nor does it have to be programmed with a single identification or sequence number for each of the counters it will read; instead, it only has to go through all the possible counter selection numbers. In another embodiment, one of the counters may be assigned a special number to select the counter that is queried first, before querying the other counters. This first interrogated counter contains data bits indicating the number of counters connected to this transmission line or bus. This information is used by the sensor / programmer to determine how many counter selection numbers need to be passed, so no time is wasted querying committee numbers that are not used in a given group of counters.
Each encoder may include a non-volatile data storage for storing various types of data, including data indicating one or more characteristics of the utility meter to which it is associated. This data may include the meter serial number, the counter selection number, the meter type, and data indicating the presence of another meter counter. This data indicating the presence of another meter counter is used in case two counters are to be read one after the other. E.g. Some types of water meters, known as combined meters, include a first counter and a measuring mechanism for measuring water consumption at a relatively low flow rate and a second counter a. a measuring mechanism for measuring the water flow at a relatively high flow rate; In the arrangement according to the invention, the memory associated with the first coded counter of the combined meter may contain data bits indicating the presence of the second counter of the combined meter, so that when the sensor / programmer queries the first counter, the sensor / programmer is notified that the second counter is to be read. , thereby multiplying the sensor / programmer to read the second counter after reading the first counter.
The non-volatile memory of the encoder is preferably of the EEPROM type and may be reprogrammed using a special signal having an initial frequency or other characteristic different from the interrogation signal, thereby signaling that the memory is to be programmed. The format, length and type of data can thus be easily reprogrammed using a sensor / programmer. In an embodiment of the invention, the encoder is powered only by energy from the sensor / programmer, so that no batteries or other source of electrical energy are required to operate the encoder.
Counter selection and other types of query and programming data are transmitted from a remote sensor / programmer or HIU interface using a special coding method. The pulses or other time-varying signals generated by the remote sensor / programmer or MITT unit that generates the interrogation signal are periodically interrupted to vary the number of pulses transmitted by the pulse generator according to the interrogation or programming data.
Further features of the invention include checking the position of the at least one dial wheel associated with the coded counter at least twice to ensure that the generated data signal accurately indicates the actual position of the counter dial wheel, comparing the first and second wheel position readings and generating an error signal after one or more attempts. if the readings do not match. The sensor / programmer may further comprise an input / output or modem for transmission to an external universal programmable processor, such as a so-called personal computer, via a multicore cable or telephone line. This allows meter status data to be transferred to the data processor and / or the sensor / programmer programmed by the data processor. The programming information may include meter location data, direction information, serial number
-7a meter type and previous meter status.
In both embodiments, with two or three conductors, the sensor / programmer may be a MIU contact unit that is permanently electrically connected to these lines and thus to the associated coded meter counters. In another embodiment, the sensor / programmer may be portable and battery powered. The psk sensor / programmer will include a connector for temporary connection to a transmission input / output connected to a two- or three-wire line to allow transmissions between the sensor / programmer and the encoder.
The encoder may further comprise circuitry for counting the pulses generated by the pulse generator type meter or by switching on the switch caused by the movement of the meter or the registration mechanism. Such types of meters, instead of generating a coded display of the meter counter status, generate an electrical impulse or cause the contact to close after being swept by a predetermined amount of utility quantity to be measured by the meter. These pulses or contact closures are stored in a mechanical totalizer or electronic shift register and the like. The number of pulses or contact closures accumulated over a period of time indicates the amount of measured quantity that has been consumed, while the frequency of pulses or contact closure indicates the instantaneous consumption of utility, i.e. water consumption in cubic meters / min., Gas consumption in cubic meters / min. . or electricity in kilowatts. Information about pulses or closing of contacts is sent to the sensor / programmer in response to the interrogation signal. If the encoder / programmer queries the encoder twice, the difference between the first and second readings can be compared, and using the interval between the first and second queries, the rate of change of the amount of utility measured by the meter can be calculated.
This is useful, for example, to determine if there is a gas or water leak somewhere in the customer's premises and to check that the meter and encoder are working properly and have not been tampered with.

Examples of embodiments of the invention
Giant. 1 illustrates a general arrangement of a two- and three-wire utility for transmitting utility values constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention. The system comprises a sensor / programmer 1 provided with a connector 2, which is adapted for direct connection to a three-wire socket 2 or a two-wire input / output 7 / using an adapter £ interposed between the connector 3 and the input / output 7 /.
The sensor / programmer 1 comprises a display 11 and a rechargeable battery pack or power supply 13. The sensor / programmer 1 may further comprise a controller, a microprocessor and input and output circuits, as described in more detail below with reference to Fig. 8. The sensor / programmer 1 it may further comprise a charging and data transmission connector 15 which is adapted to be connected to the charging and data transmission unit 17, as indicated in Fig. 1. The charging and data transmission unit 17 is connected to a computer
- 9 19, such as Is a personal computer compatible with IBM computers or similar via the standard RS232 serial interface. The computer 19 may further comprise an internal or external modem 21 for transmitting data over the telephone line 23 back to the central office 25 of the public facility for billing or load balancing purposes.
The sensor / programmer 1 is designed to be portable to be carried by the meter as it bypasses the designated meter reading circuit. As is known, the sensor / programmer 1 can be pre-programmed, preferably when connected to the computer 19 via the data charging and transmission unit 17, to insert the path direction information into the memory contained in the sensor / programmer 1. This direction information can be counter, is shown on display 11. This direction information tells the meter where the next meter to be read is located and can also indicate the type of meter /e.g. water meter, gas meter or electricity meter /, serial number of the meter and last reading of the meter at this particular place.
Currently, there are two generally incompatible types of meter reading systems in operation. In the type exemplified in U.S. Pat. No. 4,085,287, an encoder with a series of conductive pads and a movable contact associated with one or more dial wheels of the speed counter type are associated with the counter. The position of the movable contact relative to the conductive surfaces indicates the position of the counter wheel and thus the value displayed by the counter.
Upon request by the portable sensor / programmer, the detected information is sent by three or fourteen wires to the sensor / programmer. The heels are sent from the encoder to the remote sensor.
The strip type system uses a coded counter connected to a two-wire input / output that is inductively coupled to a portable meter status reading device. Such a system is disclosed in U.S. Patent Nos. 4,782,341, 4,758,836, 4,652,877 and 4,463,354. In this type of system, the transmission unit for reading the meter status is provided with an induction loop or coil which is connected to a similar loop or coil located in a socket. The socket is connected by two wires to the coded counter of the meter. The coil of the reading unit is brought close to the coil in the socket and an alternating interrogation signal is introduced into the coil connected to the meter. This AC signal is sent to the remote meter counter by inductive coupling between the two coils. The interrogation signal is used to excite the coded counter of the meter, which sends an indication of the status of the meter by calculating the AC carrier signal. The AC carrier signal may be generated inside the meter encoder or it may be a direct interrogation signal.
The invention allows the portable sensor / programmer 1, as indicated in Fig. 1, to interrogate and read coded water, gas and electricity meters by both direct three-wire electrical connection and two-wire inductively coupled connection. The system is also designed to be energy independent, i.e. it is powered only by the power supply 13 located in the portable sensor / programmer 1. The system is also not designed to remotely read more than one meter counter at a time, so that several coded counters can be connected to a common two- or three-wire bus.
Referring again to Fig. 1, when operating in three-wire mode, the connector 3 of the sensor / programmer 1 is inserted into the interconnected socket 5. The socket 5 is connected by a three-wire bus 27 to a coded water meter 29, coded electricity meter 31, coded gas meter 22 and coded a combined meter 35. Each of the meters 29, 31, 33 and 35 comprises a coded counter mechanism, described in more detail below with reference to Figs. 2, 3 and 4.
Each of these coded counters responds to the interrogation signals generated by the sensor / programmer 1 and sends back the counter status via the bus 27.
In the two-wire mode, the interrogation signal generated by the sensor / programmer 1 is transmitted via an adapter 9, which contains an induction loop or coil (indicated in more detail in Fig. 10), which located near the input / output 7 induces an interrogation signal on the two-wire bus 43. / output 7 contains a complementary loop or coil to form an inductive coupling with the adapter 9. It is connected to the two-wire bus 32
11 coded water meter 45, coded electricity meter 47, coded gas meter 49 and coded / combined meter S · Each of these meters comprises a coded counter, the characteristics and circuits of which are described in more detail below in connection with Figs. 2, 3 and 4.
It is clear that the number and types of meters and counters in Fig. 1 are rather illustrative. Other meters and counters of other types can be easily adapted to the invention. With reference to Fig. 1, it is particularly worth mentioning that the sensor / programmer 1 can read a series of remote coded counters over a single two- or three-wire bus. This capability also allows the sensor / programmer 1 to read so-called cluster meters, such as cluster meters 35 θ 51. The combined meter is a type of water meter having a first counter associated with the low water flow measuring element and a second counter associated with the high water flow measuring element. Both counters must be read to obtain an accurate water consumption value.
Another advantage of the invention is that the coded counters, which are described in more detail below, can be used or interchanged with existing two- or three-wire devices for remote meter reading. This means that the customer does not have to worry about choosing between a two- or three-wire system 8 and can choose the one that is suitable for his purposes while maintaining compatibility. Sensor / programmer 1 is specially designed to be able to read coded counters in both two- and three-wire systems.
As can be seen from Fig. 1, the I7EU contact unit 37 can also be connected to the coded meter counters via a three-wire line 53, in the embodiment described below with reference to Figs. U.S. Patent No. 4,852,152. As described in said patent, the contact unit L 6 IU 37 may comprise up to four data inputs / outputs for connecting up to four coded counters or other data generating devices. Giant. 1 for simplicity, it shows only another coded water meter 39, a coded electricity meter 41 and a coded gas meter 42 connected to the inputs of the contact unit PIU by wire lines 53. As described in the above-mentioned
12 of the patent, the contact unit 37 periodically queries the coded counters associated with the meters 39 and 41 and stores signals indicating the submerged values in the memory contained in the contact unit UIU 37. The data stored in the memory of the contact unit UIU 37 responds with a query signal sent from the central office 25 of the public facility or from the personal computer 19 and sends the meter counters 39 »41 and 42 stored in the memory of the contact unit UTU 37, P ° by telephone line 53 or 23. to office 25 or computer 19.
In this way, the data indicating the number of useful quantities measured by the meters 39, 41 and 42 can be sent back to the central office 25 of the public facility or to the computer 19. The encoder according to the invention can advantageously be used directly with conventional contactors 4,852,152. of the type described in U.S. Pat. No. 3 is a three-wire conductive connection, wherein the remote reading by a portable sensor / programmer is in a two-wire or three-wire mode.
Giant. 2 shows the electronic components contained in the coded counter. Giant. 3 shows how these components are connected to one or more wheels 56 of a speed counter type device. Associated with each wheel of the counter dial are a series of conductive surfaces 57 and a movable contact 59. For a more complete description of the mechanical aspects of the encoder mechanism of the speed counter device, see U.S. Patent No. 4,085,287 and U.S. Patent Application No. 433,864, issued November 9, 1989. ns fig.
only four wheel wheels are shown schematically, it is clear that the encoder arrangement according to Fig. 2 can be easily adapted to process any number of counter wheels or dial positions.
Referring again to FIG. 2, the microprocessor U1 has a series of switching inputs (typically ten), denoted U1, V2 to V10, which are connected to corresponding conductive surfaces 57 associated with the individual counter wheels, as schematically indicated in FIG. The microprocessor U1 further comprises a series of switched outputs S1, S2 to S6, which are connected to corresponding movable contacts 59 associated with the individual dial wheels of the counter. As described in more detail below when the microprocessor
- 13 Extra command, SI and? Outputs. The wheel selection S6 are sequentially sampled, and the contact closures detected by the switched inputs W1, W2 to WO, which signal the position of the respective wheel of the Counter Dial, are recorded in the microprocessor U1.
The microprocessor U1 is preferably of the S6 series, manufactured by SIS Thompson. The microprocessor U1 contains about 32 syllables of an electrically erasable semi-permanent EEPROM memory, which may contain data characterizing the particular encoded counter with which it is associated.
The microprocessor Ul contains an optional switching input. This reduced input is connected, for example, to a reed switch 61 located close to the excitation magnet associated with the anode water meter. When the measuring element of the water meter rotates, the excitation magnet periodically moves around the reed switch 61 and causes it to close. This switching is detected by a switched input for use in measuring flow or instantaneous consumption, as described in more detail below.
The microprocessor U1 is connected to the contact unit U2, as indicated in Fig. 2. This contact unit contains a voltage stabilizer, a modulator and contact circuits. The U2 interface unit is derived from a bipolar series of circuits manufactured by SGS Thompson.
The internal circuits of the U2 contact unit are. indicated in more detail in Fig. 4. The power supply of the contact unit U2 and the microprocessor U1 is derived from an external source, for example interrogation signals supplied from the sensor / programmer 1 or the contact unit MIU 37 (see Fig. 1) to the inputs INI and IN2 of the contact unit U2. The interrogation signal (or programming signals as described below) applied to the inputs IN1 and IN2 are supplied to the power supply unit U2 and the microprocessor U1 via a supply bridge composed of diodes D1 to D4 and a voltage stabilizer 63. The combination of a bridge of diodes D1 to D4 and a voltage stabilizer 63 produces a stabilized output voltage Vort is approximately 4.45 V, which is supplied from terminal 3 of the contact unit U2 to terminal 19 of the microprocessor U1. As indicated in Fig. 2, between Vorthe ground UND is connected to the filter capacitor C2 supply. Another filter capacitor
- 14 ^ ext power supply is connected between ground GND and terminal 11 of contact unit U2, which is at the input of voltage regulator 63. These power circuit elements help maintain a stable V voltageOut to about 4.45 V, although the voltage induced by interrogation or programming signals can vary from about 4.75 to 20 V.
An important feature of the invention is that the contact unit U2 comprises circuits for modulating the current received by the coded counter in the two-wire mode and a contact circuit having an open collector for transmitting the output data signal in the three-wire mode. In two-wire mode, the interrogation signal has a frequency of about 19.2 kHz. Part of this signal is rectified by a bridge from diodes D1 to D4 and used to power the microprocessor U1, as already described. The unit U2 contains a reset circuit which detects Vorit keeps the microprocessor in zero mode until Vort does not reach a level that guarantees proper operation of the microprocessor. mThis prevents erroneous zeroing of the microprocessor or transmission of erroneous data due to imperfect power supply.
A Schmitt flip-flop 66 is also connected to the TNI input. This circuit is used to filter the clock signal that powers the microprocessor clock so that the circuit can operate in synchronous mode, with the output rate determined by the internal clock signal. Transistor Q1 has its collector connected to input IN2, the emitter is connected to ground and its base is connected via a current-limiting resistor R1 to a data line DATA 2, connected to a microprocessor U1. In three-wire mode, the IN2 input appears to the circuit as an open collector, and during reading, the resistance in the sensor / programmer increases the signal level for Q1 appearing on IN2. In three-wire mode, the INI input would supply a clock signal.
In the two-wire mode, interrogation or programming signals are fed to the inputs IN1 and IN2, which are individually connected to diodes D5 and D6, which are further connected to the collectors of the pair of transistors Q2. The emitters of the pair of transistors Q2 are connected to ground through an external resistor RexThe base of one of the pair of transistors Q2 is connected via an isolating amplifier 68 to a data line DATA1 connected to a microprocessor U1.
- 15 H valueext determines the amount of additional current consumed, i.e. the amount of modulation in two-wire mode.
When the pair of transistors Q2 turns on, it creates an additional current to the current that is normally drawn by the counter circuits when Q2 is not conducting. This difference determines the size of the current modulation that appears at the INI and IN2 inputs. Thus, a single significant grain of current passes through Rext · - and the magnitude of the current change does not depend on the amplitude of the input voltage applied to the inputs INI and IN2.
In interrogation mode, a rectangular signal of 19.2 kHz is applied to the inputs INI and IN2 of the contact unit U2. This interrogation signal can be generated in the sensor / programmer 1 or in the contact unit · MIU 37, as indicated in Fig. 1. As already described, this interrogation signal is used to supply the microprocessor U1, which is then excited and detects the state on inputs U1 to WO from the set of wheels by sending sampling signals to the wires S1 to S6 to select the wheels. This wheel position information, which signals the state displayed by a particular counter wheel, is then formatted and sent by the microprocessor U1 as a synchronous sequence of two-phase logic signals, as indicated in Fig. 5. logic l ”is indicated by the absence of phase or state change during 16 input clock cycles. A logic ”0 is indicated by a transition that occurs sometime during a continuous clock cycle. The phase or state change indicated in FIG. 5, indicates the change in impedance occurring at the inputs INI and IN2 caused by the operation of the pair of transistors Q2 and the current modulation reference resistor Rext. The two-phase current modulation arrangement used in the two-wire embodiment of the invention causes the current drawn by the contact unit U2 to remain constant during 16 clock cycles to indicate that logic 1 is being transmitted.
When a logic 0 is transmitted, the current drawn at inputs INI and IN2 changes during a period of 16 clock cycles. Thus, if the current level changes every 16 cycles of hours, it means a logical 1 "transmission; if the current level changes after every 8 cycles, it means a logical 0 transmission.
- 16 In practice, the lower modulation level is about 1 mA and the upper level 3 roA. The two-phase encoded data is transmitted back from the inputs INI and IN2 via the two-wire bus 43, typically in the standard ASCII format, as indicated in Figure 6. This format typically includes a start bit, 7 data bits, with the lowest bit transmitted first, and parity bit followed by / two tracking bits. After sending one group of data, as long as the clock signal is still present, the wheel position information is not read again by the microprocessor U1 and sent. This will be repeated as long as the clock signal is applied to inputs INI and IN2.
Each time data is sent by the clock from the microprocessor U1, the state of the reed switch 61 is tested to see if it is open or closed. If closed, the status of the single-digit counter in the microprocessor U1 is incremented, which may be included in the output data sequence to indicate that flow is taking place in a meter such as water meter 45. If there is no flow, this flow status bit remains at zero.
In three-wire interrogation mode, a clock signal with a frequency of eg 2400 Hz is fed between the INI input and ground. As in the two-wire mode, the power supply for the contact unit U2 and the microprocessor U1 is derived from the clock signal. The counter wheel position data is detected by the microprocessor U1 and sent synchronously with the clock signal as a sequence. ASCII data of transistor Q1, activities. which appears as an open collector outlet. The ASCII data format is the same as in two-wire mode, as shown in Figure 6.
Since this is a synchronous mode as in the case of the previously described two-wire version, the speed at which the data is transmitted at the IN2 terminal is determined by the frequency of the input clock. Normally there is a one to one ratio. However, it is only possible to clock the data bits after a certain number of cycles of hours. If a division ratio of 16 is selected, one data bit is sent to the IN2 terminal after every 16 clock cycles coming to the INI input. This division ratio is programmable in a micronrocessor U1.
Steam ΐ SHOCK, which is part of the microprocessor Ul, can be programmed, as will be explained in more detail below, to contain data related to the characteristics of the coded counter with which
The characteristic data may include, inter alia, a meter identification number or serial number, a counter selection number (described in more detail below), an identification or a sign indicating the meter manufacturer, a sign indicating the type of meter, e.g. a gas meter, water meter or electricity meter, an indication of whether the meter should transmit in two- or three-wire mode and data indicating the presence of another meter counter. This data indicating the presence of another meter counter is used when two meter counters are to be read one after the other, as in the case of combined water meters. Tandthis data signals to the sensor / programmer the presence of a second counter of the combined meter, so that when the first counter · interrogates a sensor / programmer, such as sensor / programmer 1 in Fig. 1, the sensor / programmer is notified that there is still a second counter · has a number that causes the sensor / programmer to read the second counter after reading the first counter. All data stored in the EHPROM in the microprocessor M1 can be changed by a suitable external programming signal, as will be described in more detail below.
An important aspect of the invention is the ability of a meter reading system to read several coded meter counters connected to a common two- or three-wire bus. In the usual selection arrangement, the sensor / programmer 1 or the MIU 37 contact unit would contain in its memories a list of identification or serial numbers of all meters connected to the network. When the sensor / programmer 1 connects to the respective two- or three-wire network, it sequentially selects the identification or sequence numbers contained in its memory until all coded meter counters in the network respond with these identification or sequence numbers. However, there is a practical limitation of this arrangement, because the sensor / programmer 1 must contain a list of all possible coded counters that can be queried on a certain circuit. In fact, both economic and electrical considerations dictate that the number of coded meter counters that can be connected to a single two-wire network be limited. Sequential selection by scrolling through a list of hundreds or even thousands of sequence numbers and meter identifications that may be included in the sensor / programmer memory 1 may result in only a small percentage of valid identification or sequence numbers being applied to a particular two- or three-wire network.
This limitation is solved in the present invention in that the counter selection number or number for each coded counter is unique in a given local network. E.g. the local hall may have a first counter with a selection number of 00, a second counter 01, a third 02, etc. This means that the sensor / programmer 1 does not have to know the sequence or identification number of the counters of the meters connected to the network. Sensor / Programmer 1 only needs to go through all the counter selection numbers for the network that has the highest number of counters in the system. If the largest local network has 100 meters connected to a single two- or three-wire local network, sensor / programmer 1 will only need to go through selection numbers 00 to 99 to ensure that all counters in that network are read. In addition, it is possible to program one of the coded counters so that the EEPROM memory in the microprocessor U1 of this counter contains an indication indicating the number of counters connected to this network or the highest selection number of the counter that is connected to this network. This special coded counter may be assigned a single or easily identifiable counter selection number such as 00 or 99. The sensor / programmer 1 is then programmed to automatically check for this single counter selection number. As part of the data sequence coming back from this coded counter, the sensor / programmer is informed of the total number or the highest number of selection of coded counters connected to the local network.
This arrangement allows the sensor / programmer 1 to quickly and completely select all coded counters and only those counters connected to a given local network, without wasting time by dialing unused counter selection numbers.
The counter selection number is transmitted from the sensor / programmer 1 via the two-wire bus 4,2 or the three-wire bus 27 as an 8-bit number (two hexadecimal characters). The counter selection data is coded by the pulse length, where ones and zeros are signaled by periodic interruption of the CLK clock signal transmitted from sensor / programmer 1. E.g. the CLK clock signal may be interrupted for about 1 ms after each certain number of clock cycles.
In the solution used in the invention and indicated in Fig. 7, if the number of clock cycles between interrupts is less than 106, the microprocessor U1 of the coded counter will interpret this as logical 0. If the number of clock cycles between interrupts is greater than 106 but less than 138 , microprocessor U1 interprets it as logical ”1. If the number of clock cycles between interrupts is greater than 138, the microprocessor U1 interprets it as a reset period, i. the memory area in the microprocessor U1 waiting for the incoming counter selection data bits is automatically reset if there are more than 138 clock cycles between interrupts.
An important consequence of this arrangement is that if the counter finds its selection number, the data contained in the EEPROM memory and in the notebook memory of the microprocessor U1 will be sent by the clock, as previously described, by the associated two-wire bus 43 or three-wire bus 27. Because sending counter data requires significantly more than 138 clock cycles, that is, all other counters connected to the same common bus or local area network are automatically reset whenever a counter responds to its selection number and sends data. This ensures that all counters connected to a given local area network are automatically resynchronized with interrogation / clock / signals and eliminates the need to add start and trace bit characters to the two hexadecimal characters sent by the sensor / programmer that signal the selection number of the desired counter.
In an embodiment of the invention, the pulse length coding method, as shown in Fig. 7, uses one millisecond gaps in the 19.2 kHz interrogation or data signal to signal the distances between the data bits. Logic 1 ”is displayed by a sequence of 19.2 kHz clock burst pulses with a length of 7 ms. Logic 0 is displayed by a sequence of 19.2 kHz clock pulses with a length of 4 ms. Heels in programming and query mode are transmitted using even parity ASCII code.
As mentioned, an important feature of the invention is the ability to program steam EEPROM in a microprocessor U1. In programming mode, the contents of the EEPROM can be overwritten or changed.
In query mode, the contents of the EEPROM can be read but not changed. The programming mode gives the customer the ability to customize the characteristics associated with a particular coded counter. Query mode allows the customer to check the contents of the EEPROM memory to ensure that the contents of the EEPROM topic have been written correctly.
In order for the coded counter to enter the interrogation or programming mode, the sensor / programmer 1 generates a special interrogation signal 38.4 kHz. This signal has exactly twice the frequency of the normal interrogation signal frequency of 19.2 kHz. This special query / programming signal takes at least 50 ms. The microprocessor M1 of the coded counter is programmed to have a timing loop that detects the frequency of the incoming clock signal. If the frequency is 19.2 kHz, the microprocessor assumes a normal interrogation mode, reads the positions of the individual wheels of the counter dial, and reports them back to the sensor / programmer 1, as previously described. When the microprocessor U1 detects the 38.4 kHz query / programming query signal, it enters the query / programming mode. The microprocessor U1 then waits for one ASCII character transmitted by the sensor / programmer 1. The sensor / programmer 1 sends a Q to ask the two-wire network for the contents of the EEPROM memory, resp. q to ask the contents of the EEPROM memory over a three-wire network. Upon receipt of the Q or q character, the microprocessor U1 sends the contents of the EEPROM in the form of even parity ASCII data.
To put the EEPROM into programming mode, sensor / programmer 1 sends a P when working with a two-wire network, or p when working with a three-wire network. In both two-wire and three-wire mode, immediately after the character of the programming mode,
P or p, sends programming information to the microprocessor Ul 32 of the data syllables. Because the microprocessor has been put into programming mode, it will allow the contents of the EEPROM to be overwritten with new programming data. As soon as the data is written to the EEPROM memory of the microprocessor U1, the microprocessor immediately reads the new contents of the EEPROM memory as if it were in query mode and sends them back to the sensor / programmer 1 to confirm the data, no;programmed into EEPROM.
After completing both the query and coding counter programming modes, the microprocessor automatically returns to its normal query mode. In this mode, the data from the coded counter is transmitted back as 23 to 34 syllables of data depending on the range of reading the meter status and identification. A typical message format is indicated in the following table.

the character can be a space. The three user characters do not affect the operation of the counter, but allow the end customer to enter identification characters or information into the counter. The two-character checksum is normally the sum of all data characters contained in the message except the STX and ETX characters. However, if required, in the programming mode, a sum character can be sent to the EEPROM contained in the microprocessor U1, which will also identify which characters in the message are derived from the contents of the EEPROM memory and which from the meter read. The microprocessor U1 then adds to this summation the flow indication (if used) and the reading of the meter status. This saves the time required by the microprocessor U1 to process the information, because it only has to add additional flow data and meter readings to the existing checksum and does not have to recalculate the checksum. In addition, it provides feedback that the information contained in the EEPROM of the microprocessor U1 has not changed. If the change were to occur either accidentally or intentionally, the checksum would be incorrect and an error message would be sent back to the sensor / programmer 1.
As previously described, in the interrogation mode, the sensor / programmer 1 generates an interrogation (clock) signal of 19.2 kHz and transmits it via a two- or three-wire network to the coded counter. From this interrogation signal, the energy used to excite the microprocessor U1 is derived in the contact unit U2 of the coded counter. Microprocessor Ul Times the interrogation clock pulses to confirm that the actual interrogation signal is present and not noise or other transients. The microprocessor U1 then samples the selection lines S1 to S6 of the wheels and detects the presence of signals on the lines W1 to WO of the group of wheels. This information is then stored in a temporary notebook memory in the microprocessor U1. The same query procedure is repeated with the second reading of the position of the dial dials and the reading is compared with the first reading stored in the memory. If there is a complete match, the counter reading of the counter 3e sends the output together with the other characteristic data of the counter contained in the EEPROM memory back to the sensor / programmer 1.
If the readings do not match, the microprocessor U1 will repeatedly read the positions of the Counter Dial wheels up to five times and compare the instantaneous reading with the previous one until a verified match is found. If they do not match after five readings, the microprocessor Ul fills in the field for the meter status / see table 1 / with the character X instead of the numeric characters 0-9. Microprocessor Ul in addition
- 23 detects connected and open contacts, e.g. short circuit between conductive surfaces 37 / see Fig. 3 / or where there is movable contact 39 between conductive surfaces 57. In case of open circuit a dash is inserted in the appropriate field for reading the meter. In the event of a short circuit, the H character is inserted in the appropriate position in the meter reading data field. These error indications are then sent back to sensor / programmer 1.
To detect flow or leakage, the state of the reed switch 61 is monitored each time the microprocessor U1 is turned on. The rotation of the magnet and thus the opening and closing of the reed switch 61 shows the flow of liquid through the meter. The speed of rotation of the magnet and thus the number of opening and closing of the reed switch 61 per unit time indicates the amount of flow.
In the flow or leak detection mode, the state of the reed switch 61 is monitored to determine if the reed switch 61 has opened or closed. part of the message / see table 1 / is sent to the output to indicate that there is a flow. In this mode, a leak can be detected when all normal sources using water in the building (for example, washing machines, dishwashers, sinks and bathtubs) have been shut off beforehand. The coded counter is queried by the sensor / programmer 1 for a few seconds to see if there is a flow (i.e., whether the state of the reed switch 61) changes. However, the tin detection mode informs the user that there is flow, but does not give information about its magnitude.
To determine the flow rate, the reed switch 61 is monitored for a few seconds or, if necessary, for a longer period of time. The number of openings and closings of the reed switch 61 is counted and temporarily stored in the notebook memory of the microprocessor U1. The number of openings and closings in the monitored time (the time interval of which is measured by the counting circuits contained in the microprocessor U1) is used to calculate the flow rate. This is done easily because
- 24 opening and closing of the reed switch 61 indicates half the speed of the magnetic coupling of the respective water meter. The volume of water passed through the meter per revolution is a known quantity. The flow rate is then simply calculated using the formula:
size number of switch closures x volume per half speed flow measurement interval
It is also possible to program the microprocessor U1 so that immediately after reading the position of all the dial wheels of the counter, the microprocessor switches to the flow rate detection mode in a predetermined time. This eliminates the need for a separate query on the coded counter to determine the flow rate after entering query mode.
As a further feature of the invention, an arrangement for detecting the magnitude of the flow with obtaining a so-called pulse output can be used. In this mode, a coded counter, e.g. 39 in Fig. 1, is connected to the UIU 37 contact unit. The JUTU 37 contact unit either has its own power supply (using an internal battery) or is more typically supplied with the voltage normally present on the telephone line 55. . The contact unit MIU 37 can then continuously or intermittently monitor the state of the flow symbol in the microprocessor U1 associated with the coded counter of the meter. Since the volume of water or other utility variable per revolution of the magnetic clutch of the meter 39 is a known value, the number of pulses received by the MIU 37 from the coded counter of the meter 39 over time indicates the total amount of water or other charged quantity measured by the meter.
While the detection of flow or leakage and flow rate according to the invention has been described in connection with the use of a reed switch in combination with a magnetically coupled water meter drive, it is clear that any coding system in which the state of the switch or other element can be detected is also suitable in connection with the present invention. E.g. the meter may include a pulse output when rotation of the swirl disk is detected electro-optically. Other pulse sources or status information, such as piezoelectric pulse generators, rotating electrical generators, or the like, may
- be used with suitable pulse or sts detection circuits which are known. This allows the meter reading system of the invention to be used with older remote read meters that do not use an absolute encoder of the counter mechanism, as described above and in U.S. Patent No. 4,085,287. These pulse-type meters, although not accurate to absolute-encoded counters, are quite common. The pulse mode therefore allows the adaptation and reading of these older pulse meters with a simple change of sensor / programmer programming 1.
As already mentioned, an important feature of the described meter reading system is its ability to select or read several coded counters connected to the same local two- or three-wire network. In this selection mode, the sensor / programmer 1 would send a counter selection number, which could be, for example, a number between 00 and 99. Each coded counter of a meter connected to a given local network would be previously programmed /e.g. using the programming mode function described above / counter selection number only for this particular network. The nomadic meter counters, in particular the microprocessors U1 associated with each counter, are programmed to recognize their selection numbers, which have been previously programmed and stored in the EEPROM memory associated with the respective milcroprocessor U1. After recognizing its selection number, the counter would then read the status of the dial dial wheels and respond by sending this status along with other data associated with the meter status report, as shown in Tab. 1. Two syllables of information reserved for network identification ', given in tab. 1, are the same as the counter selection number.
In the basic selection mode, the sensor / programmer 1 would send the counter-selection number 01, then 02, etc., until it has gone through all possible counter selection numbers. The answers come back from those coded counters whose selection numbers are in the query. The sensor / programmer thus does not have to know the sequence numbers or the only identification of a certain coded counter of the meter, but only has to go through all possible selection numbers to ensure the selection of all coded counters on the given network. If a counter selection number with two syllables is used, it will be possible for one local network
- 26 connect up to, 100 rounded counters / counter selection numbers 00 to. 99 /. However, if a larger number of counters needs to be connected, a longer syllable may be reserved for this purpose to indicate the selection of the counter. However, for several reasons, connecting more than 100 coded counters to one local network becomes difficult. This is due to the additional time required to select the added coded counters of the meters and due to the additional energy requirements imposed on the sensor / programmer 1, because the sensor / programmer 1 will have to excite a. The increased resistance and impedance caused by this longer line can be compensated to some extent, as described below, but at the cost of lower speed and you? power consumption on the side of the sensor / programmer.
The use of counter selection numbers allows for a more sophisticated selection method than just mentioned. E.g. the sensor / programmer 1 can be pre-programmed to always select the selection number of the counter 99 as the first selection number. One of the coded meter counters on a given local network is pre-programmed to respond to this selection number 99. This counter would not respond back to the selection number 99, but rather a number equal to the number of counters connected to the local network. For example, if four counters were connected to the local network, this counter would correspond to selection number 4, which would tell the sensor / programmer that there are three more counters. These additional counters would be pre-programmed with selection numbers 01, 02 and 03. Sensor / programmer 1 would then select these three additional counters in any order.
In this way, the sensor / programmer 1 will know immediately after the initial query of the local network how many coded meter counters are connected to this network and will not waste time going through the counter selection numbers which are not present in the network.
In the case of a combined water meter 35 or 51 / FIG. 1 / a single selection number may be assigned to the first coded counter of the combined meter, e.g. 99. This would tell the sensor / controller 1 that the meter is combined and that the second coded counter contained in this combined meter is to be read. A single selection number 01 can be assigned to this second coded counter.
- The selection of specific counter selection numbers is completely arbitrary and can be easily changed to suit a particular user.
With this arrangement, the selection of a number of counters connected to the local network is fast and efficient, and the presence of combined meters with two coded counters is also suitable.
Turning to the pumpkin, we turn to Fig. 8, where the basic elements contained in the sensor / programmer 1 are indicated in the form of a group diagram. The sensor / programmer 1 comprises a second microprocessor 64, preferably a Z8 processor, a product of Zilog. Microprocessor 64 includes notebook memories, buffers, clocks, and input / output circuits for contact with external devices. Details of the construction and function of such a microprocessor are well known and will not be described in more detail here. HAL memory is connected to microprocessor 64! 65 for temporarily storing instructions and data processed by the microprocessor 64. The microprocessor 64 also communicates with the two-wire input / output circuit 67 and the three / four-wire input / output circuit 69. which we will describe in more detail below. A buzzer 71 or other acoustic alarm source is connected to the microprocessor 64 to generate an audible alarm signal under certain circumstances. A keyboard 73 is connected to the microprocessor 64. This keyboard 73 allows manual input of data or other information into the microprocessor 64. A display 75, which generally corresponds to the display 11, as not shown in FIG. 1, is also connected to the microprocessor 64 for visually displaying data or other information processed by or in the microprocessor 64. saved. The sensor / programmer 1 may further comprise an RS232 serial interface 77 for input and output, which allows external programming of the microprocessor 64 and / or reading or changing the contents of the RAM 65 via the output connector 15 indicated in Fig. 1.
The sensor / programmer 1 comprises a battery 79 which generally corresponds to the power supply 13 in Fig. 1. The battery 79 is preferably of the rechargeable nickel-cadmium type; the battery supplies DC power to microprocessor 64, two-wire input / output circuit 67, three / fourteen-wire input / output circuit 69, and other sensor / programmer 1 circuits. It should be noted that microprocessor 64 may include a battery output voltage monitoring function 79 and an alarm. , e.g. buzzer 71 and / or display 75 if the output voltage of the battery 79 drops below a predetermined level indicating the need to recharge. The watchdog timer, which is part of the microprocessor 64, can be set to turn off the power to most of the circuits contained in the sensor / programmer 1 when the power is turned on but no operation is detected. This helps to save the energy stored in the battery 79 in case the sensor / programmer 1 has been inadvertently left on. In this case, the power will be turned off and only minimal current will be drawn from the battery 79, sufficient to maintain minimum important functions, such as the contents of RAM 65, the clock, and the switched inputs of microprocessor 64.
In two-wire mode, microprocessor 64 controls the operation of two-wire input / output circuit 67. The two-wire input / output circuit 67 includes a power excitation circuit, a coil excitation circuit, a demodulator, various logic circuits, a two-wire input / output power supply circuit, all of which are indicated in more detail in FIG.
9. Both the coil excitation circuit and the demodulator are connected to the excitation coil 52. The excitation coil 83 is preferably formed as part of the adapter 9, as indicated in Fig. 1 and in more detail in Fig. 10. The excitation coil 82 is formed as a multi-threaded loop of wire. located at the end of the adapter 9. Near the excitation coil 82 is a sensing switch 88. This sensor switch 85 is a normally open mechanical silicone rubber switch with a conductive surface at the bottom. The sensor switch 85 is fully sealed against the surroundings. The opposite end of the adapter 2 comprises a connector with four contacts, two of which are connected to the excitation coil 83 and two are connected to the sensing switch 85. These contacts correspond to the contacts of the connector 3 of the sensor / programmer 1 (see Fig. 1). The connector 3 of the sensor / programmer 1 comprises pin connectors for connection to an adapter 9, a three-wire socket 5 or a 14-socket socket (not shown), which is still used in some older types of coded meter counters according to the previous method. After
- 29 contact of the sensor switch 85 with the surface of the button inductive input / output 7 of the two-wire local area network 43 indicated in Fig. 1, closing of the switch 85 indicates to the two-wire input / output circuit 67 that the adapter is in contact with the two-wire input / output 7. input / output 2 contains a winding with one or more turns. When the excitation coil 83 is brought close to the coil of the two-wire input / output 7, the two coils are inductively coupled to each other.
Closing the sensing switch 85 causes the two-wire input / output circuit 67 of the microprocessor 64 to be activated to read or program any of the coded counters connected to the two-wire local area network 43. It should be noted that the sensor / programmer 1 may further include a manual trigger 87 /. see Figures 1 and 8, which is a normally open switch that can be used to manually activate a two-wire I / O circuit 67 or a three-fourteen-wire I / O circuit 69 and a microprocessor 64. Manual start of sensor / programmer 1 can be used to override touch start with sensor switch 85 when sensor / programmer 1 needs to be manually activated. Manual start of sensor / programmer 1 also serves as a backup in case the touch sensor switch 85 fails for any reason. Although we have described the tactile automatic start ε using the sensor switch 85 mainly in connection with the adapter 9 with two-wire input / output 7, a touch sensor switch of the same type could be used in conjunction with the sensor / programmer connector 3 for automatic sensor / programmer activation. 1 when connected directly via a three- or fourteen-pin socket 5, as indicated in FIG. 1.
Although the inductive coupling between the sensor / programmer 1 and the two-wire bus 43 is indicated in FIG. 1, it should be noted that the output of the two-wire input / output circuit 67 need not be connected to the inductive input / output 7 via the excitation coil 83.
Instead, the line normally connected to the excitation coil may be connected directly (permanently or detachably) to the two-wire local bus 43. In normal two-wire mode, the sensor / programmer 1 and the circuits associated with the remote coded counter 30 operate in balanced mode if bound via excitation coil 83 and inductive input / output 7. If inductive coupling is not used, it is possible to connect the sensor / programmer 1 directly to the two-wire bus 43. It is also possible for the microprocessor U1 / FIG. 2 / transistor Q1 closed / fig. 4 / via the DATA2 line to create a ground reference. This prevents the contact circuit U2 (Fig. 4) from electrically floating when both signals at the inputs INI and IN2 / Fig. 4 / have a lower level. This is used if both signals at inputs INI and IN2 are allowed to have a low level.
We will now describe in more detail the interrogation and reading of meters in two-wire mode. Referring to FIG. 9, the two-wire input / output circuit 67 includes a power supply circuit 89 for supplying various stabilized voltages to the remainder of the two-wire input / output circuit 67. The power supply 89 also generates a reference voltage V2 used by the other two-wire input / output circuit elements 67.
The excitation power supply 91 uses an integrated pulse stabilizer U6j in combination with the choke L1 and the diode D5 forms a dc-dc step converter to generate an dc output voltage V1.r-j_ver for excitation of the excitation coil 83. The transistor Q1 of the excitation power supply 91 is a switching element of the ss-ss converter.
The demodulator 93 comprises an oscillator with a crystal time base generated by the crystal XT1 in combination with the timing circuit of the microprocessor U1. The output of the oscillator is fed to the filter U5 with switched capacitors with a cut-off frequency of about 1500 Hz. The time base frequency generated by the oscillator is set to approximately one hundred times the cutoff frequency of the filter, i.e. 150 kHz. The demodulator 22 further includes a current sensing resistor R17.
This resistor is connected to the output V ^rand changes in the current supplied to the excitation coil 83 are reflected on the current sensing resistor R17 and are introduced into a switched capacitor filter U5 which filters out the high frequency components associated with the clock / interrogation signals transmitted. excitation power supply 91 and excitation coil 83. E.g. these clock / interrogation signals may be 19.2
k.Hz for normal interrogation mode signals and 38.4 kHz for initial interrogation and programming mode signals, as described previously. The generation of these signals is described in more detail below. The filtered output of the switched capacitor filter U5 is amplified and fed to a Schmitt flip-flop circuit which detects low frequency fluctuations in the current sensed by the current sensing resistor R17. These current changes are converted into voltage changes, which are then compared with the reference voltage V2 by a Schroitt flip-flop. The output of this flip-flop circuit, fed to the isolating amplifier U2r indicates fluctuations in the current flowing through the excitation coil 83 caused by impedance changes caused by two-phase modulated signals coming to the two-wire local bus 43 by the operation of the pair of transistors Q2 of the meter coded counter circuit U2 (see Figs. 2 and 4).
The microprocessor 64 uses a phase-locked-loop synchronization software algorithm in which the demodulator 93 detects the phase of data derived from a current modulated signal. This prevents any phase shift of the data coming back from the coded counter of the meter, which would cause the microprocessor to be unable to accurately reconstruct the data.
A longer feature of the invention when operating in two-wire mode is that the coil excitation circuit 95 and excitation power supply 91 can detect when additional current is drawn through the local two-wire bus 43 due to the additional line included in the network. Because the individual local two-wire buses 43 may have different line lengths, the amount of current drawn by a particular network corresponding to the impedance of the conductors and their natural reactance at the interrogation clock frequency of 19.2 kHz is also lower. Without adaptive compensation according to the invention, longer conductors would cause a higher voltage induced in the excitation coil 83 and thus in the inductive input / output 7. This higher induced voltage could exceed the voltages that can be safely applied to the coded counter circuits of Fig. 2.
Therefore, in the embodiment of the present invention, the amount of current drawn by the excitation coil 83 is monitored, and the excitation signal decreases as the current drawn increases. This is achieved by using a resistor R20 at the output of the excitation power supply 91. If additional current is drawn through resistor R20 due to decreasing reactance on the local two-wire bus 43, this results in an increased current flow through resistor R20, which causes the voltage (about 15 V) supplied by the excitation circuit 91 to decrease to compensate. local two-wire bus reactance
43.
The coded counter of the meter, namely its contact unit U2, indicated in Figs. 2 and 4, causes changes in load or impedance connected to the local two-wire bus 43 and thus modulates the current flowing through the excitation coil 83 according to two-phase ASCII coded data performed on the local bus 43 and bound to excitation coil 83 via induction input / output 7. The demodulator 93 is used to detect the current drawn by the excitation coil 83 by sensing this current through a current sensing resistor R17, filtering the sensed signal by a switched capacitor U5, and comparing the demodulated signal to a reference signal using a Schmitt flip-flop to obtain a demodulated data signal whenever detected. such a change.
The coil driver circuit 95 responds to a two-wire clock signal derived from the microprocessor 64 and a two-wire opening signal that is used to initiate the transmission of two-wire clock / interrogation signals through the pair of gates U2. When the microprocessor 64 sends a two-wire opening signal to the terminal 6 (in Fig. 9), it lowers the opening line and allows the output of the Vdriver output.ssi 15 V from the excitation power supply 91 via the sensing resistor R17 to the excitation circuit 95 of the coil * The two-wire opening signal is also coupled to the timing generator U1 of the demodulator 93, which then releases the function of the switched capacitor filter U5. Thus, the two-wire opening signal causes the coil driver circuit 95 to allow the 19.2 kHz clock / dot signal generated by the microprocessor 64 to pass to the drive coil 83 and activate the demodulator 93. to enable the detection of any current modulated signals that would come from the coded counter connected to the local two-wire bus 43.
The two-wire input / output circuit 67 further includes some
33 logic circuits §7, which detect the state of the mechanical sensor switch 85, which is part of the adapter 2 · Logic circuits 97 also respond to the operation of the manual trigger 87. Pressing the manual trigger 87 can be used for the sensor / programmer 1 to display certain information at initial power-up, such as sensor / programmer identification or sequence number 1 8 some software control numbers. When used in selection mode, the handwheel 87 can be used to switch the display between one or two counters.
Giant. 11 shows in more detail the circuit arrangement comprising the microprocessor 64. The microprocessor 64 (designated U1 Z8 in FIG. 11) is an 8-bit processor and has about 8000 bits of memory available on the board. However, if additional memory is required, it can be supplied in the form of RAM 6g or auxiliary memory PROM or ERPROM for processing operating instructions.
Power circuits 99 are associated with the microprocessor 64.
The negative voltage source 101 generates both a negative voltage Λ13 / and a display compensation / Q2 / for the display 73.
The buzzer circuit 71 includes a single transistor Q1, which is activated by sending an opening signal from the microprocessor 64. This signal is sent whenever the microprocessor 64 detects an alarm condition, e.g., detects tamper signal from coded meter counter, low battery warning, ambiguous counter reading meters, etc. Triggering the buzzer circuit 72 can also be used to indicate to the operator of the sensor / programmer 1 that a specific meter has been read and is error-free. However, it is a simple matter to equip the buzzer with a second tone, so that the circuit of the buzzer 71 emits two different tones. In this way, it is possible to distinguish error conditions from the sound emitted during a correct read.
As mentioned earlier, the microprocessor 64 includes a software watchdog timer that monitors the individual functions of the sensor / programmer 1 and turns off the sensor / programmer 1 in the event of certain conditions. E.g. after the initial ignition and closing of the sensing switch 85, the microprocessor 64 begins to generate clock / interrogation signals which are fed to the excitation coil 83. If no data is detected from the local coil within a predetermined time.
- 34 two-wire bus 43. the watchdog timer causes the clock / interrogation signal to switch off. This function can also be programmed to automatically turn on the clock / interrogation signal a second time, after it is temporarily turned off, in case the sensor / programmer 1 or the counter of the remote meter wakes up in a double-state state.
The arrangement indicated in Figs. 9 and 11 can also be adapted to read coded meter counters by a three-wire network such as a local three-wire network. bus 27, disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 4,085,287. In a fourteen-wire configuration, as disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 4,085,287, the microprocessor 64 may be configured to have ten switching inputs connected to the conductive pads ZL (see FIG. 3 / individual dial dial wheels, and four inputs connected to four movable contacts 59 / for a counter dial with four wheels /. By sampling those + o four contacts, the microprocessor 64 can determine the positions of the switches /e.g. wires 1, 2, .., 0 in Fig. 3 / the position of the individual wheels of the Dial. In another embodiment, fourteen wires of coded counters can be read using the reading circuits described in U.S. Patent No. 4,085,287 or the circuits indicated in FIG. 2. These circuits may be incorporated as part of the three / fourteen wire input / output circuit 69 shown in FIG. 8.
The three-wire transmissions are performed by the sensor / programmer 1 using a clock signal derived from a two-wire clock signal applied to the coil excitation circuit 95 or a separate clock signal generated directly by the microprocessor 64. This signal is fed through the conductor indicated in FIG. circuit U2 in Fig. 2. Three-wire data output with terminals IN2 of contact unit U2 / fig. 2 / is fed to the microprocessor 64 directly or via suitable signal splitters contained in the three / fourteen wire input / output circuit 69. The sensor / programmer 1 and the counter circuits of the meter with option 2, are also bound to the mode appear as units U2 (see Fig. 4) of the remote interrogation, indicated in Fig. By the common ground CIND. Data in the three-wire open collector at terminal 1112 contact
- 35 and have the standard ASCII format as described previously. The interrogation / clock signal CLK applied to the input INI of the contact unit U2, indicated in Fig. 2, preferably operates at a frequency of 1200 or 2400 Hz. The data output at terminal IN2 is synchronous with this clock signal. Normally, in three-wire mode, the relationship will be one to one between. clock signal and data signal. However, it is possible to program the microprocessor U1 of the coded counter / FIG. 2 / to another ratio. E.g. one bit of data can be sent to the input every 16 clock cycles.
Although the invention has been described in substantial detail, further changes in modification will occur to those skilled in the art. Accordingly, the detailed description of the embodiments is to be considered as illustrative, but not restrictive, of the scope of the invention, which is defined by the appended claims.
