Abstract

ABSTRACT A telescopic side arm for a refuse vehicle has an inner and outer boom. A mounting assembly secures the outer boom with a refuse vehicle. -A plurality of bearing pads is positioned between the inner and outer booms to provide smooth movement between the inner and outer booms.     CLAIMS:1. A telescopic side arm for a refuse vehicle, comprising: an outer boom defining a bore;an inner boom received in the bore of the outer boom;a mounting assembly coupled to the outer boom, the mounting assembly configured to secure the outer boom with the refuse vehicle;a plurality of bearing pads positioned between the inner boom and the outer boom, the plurality of bearing pads in contact with an inner surface of the outer boom defining the bore;a plurality of shims in contact with the plurality of bearing pads, the plurality of shims configured to provide a secure fit between the inner boom and the outer boom, each of the plurality of shims including a body having a pair of legs connected by a first web and an attachment mechanism configured to secure the plurality of shims to the outer boom or inner boom;a pin received by a bracket on the refuse vehicle;a plate coupled with the pin, the plate configured to retain the pin in the bracket;and a bearing sliding over the pin, the bearing having a bearing surface configured to provide access to the mounting assembly;and a mechanism coupling the mounting assembly to the outer boom.

    The telescopic side arm according to any one of claims 1-2, wherein the outer boom has a cross-section having a polygonal shape, wherein a top portion of the crosssection is U-shaped, the top portion having legs at an obtuse angle with respect to a CA 3095649 2023-01-31 third web of the outer boom.

    The telescopic side arm according to any one of claims 1 -3, wherein the inner boom has a cross-section having a polygonal shape, wherein a bottom portion ofthe cross-section is U-shaped, the bottom portion having legs at an obtuse angle with respect to a fourth web of the inner boom.

    The telescopic side arm according to any one of claims 1 -4, wherein each shim of the plurality of shims includes a tab extending from the first web, the tab being substantially perpendicular to the first web.

    The telescopic side arm according to any one of claims 1-5, wherein the mounting assembly pivotally secures the outer boom to the refuse vehicle.

    The telescopic side arm according to any one of claims 1-6, wherein a bottom portion of the inner boom is configured to slidably couple with the outer boom.

    The telescopic side arm according to any one of claims 12-13, wherein a first part of the bracket comprises the first aperture, wherein a second part of the bracket comprises a second aperture, wherein a third bearing is received in the second aperture, and wherein the journal at least partially extends through the third bearing.

    The telescopic side arm according to any one of claims 13-14, wherein the plate is directly connected to both an end surface of the journal and the bracket.

    A refuse collection vehicle, comprising:CA 3095649 2023-01-31 a chassis;an arm coupled to the chassis, the arm configured to grasp a bin from a location on one side of the refuse collection vehicle and dump refuse from the bin, the arm comprising: an outer boom;and an inner boom residing in a bore of the outer boom, the inner boom configured to telescopically extend and retract relative to the outer boom;a bearing pad bracket residing between tiie inner boom and the outer boom, the bearing pad bracket comprising a bearing pad bracket body having opposing legs at an angle relative to a web extending between the legs, at least one of the legs and the web including a first opening configured to receive a bearing pad;and a mounting assembly configured to support pivoting movement of the arm, the mounting assembly comprising: a mounting bracket comprising a first aperture;a first bearing received in the first aperture of the mounting bracket;a second bearing received in a base of the outer boom;and a journal at least partially extending through the first and second bearings.

    The refuse collection vehicle of any one of claims 27-29, wherein a first part of the mounting bracket comprises the first aperture, wherein a second part of the mounting bracket comprises a second aperture, wherein a third bearing is received in CA 3095649 2023-01-31 the second aperture, and wherein the journal at least partially extends through the third bearing.

    The refuse collection vehicle of any one of claims 27-30, further comprising a plate directly connected to both an end surface of the journal and the mounting bracket.

    A refuse collection vehicle, comprising:a chassis;a cab coupled to the chassis;a container coupled to the chassis, the container residing rearward of the cab relative to a forward direction of movement of the refuse collection vehicle;an arm coupled to the chassis, the arm configured to grasp a bin from a location on one side of the refuse collection vehicle and dump refuse from the bin, the arm comprising: an outer boom;and an inner boom residing in a bore of the outer boom, the inner boom configured to telescopically extend and retract relative to the outer boom;a mounting assembly configured to support pivoting movement of tee arm, the mounting assembly comprising: a mounting bracket secured to a surface of the container and residing between the container and tee cab along thé forward direction, the mounting bracket comprising a first aperture;CA 3095649 2023-01-31 a first bearing received in the first aperture of the mounting bracket;a second bearing received in a base of the outer boom;and a journal at least partially extending through the first and second bearings.

    The refuse collection vehicle of claims 43 or 44, further comprising:a plate directly connected to both an end surface of the journal and the mounting bracket;and at least one pillow block concentric with the second bearing and secured to the outer boom.
