Apparatuses for reducing angular velocity of protective shells associated with protective headwear

Abstract

A protective headwear (20) is provided and includes a support member (28) configured to engage a user's head, an outer shell (24) coupled to the support member (28) and rotatable relative to the support member (28) between a first position and a second position, and a member (52) coupled between the support member (28) and the outer shell (24) to reduce angular velocity of the outer shell (24) as it moves from the first position to the second position. The protective headwear may be a welding helmet.

  1. 1
CLAIMS What is claimed is:1. A protective headwear comprising: a support member configured to engage a user’s head;an outer shell coupled to the support member and rotatable relative to the support member between a first position and a second position;and a member coupled between the support member and the outer shell, wherein the member includes a first portion and a second portion formed separately from each other and moveable relative to each other as the outer shell moves from the first position to the second position, wherein the first portion includes a first surface and the second portion includes a second surface, wherein the first surface and the second surface engage each other, wherein the outer shell rotates about an axis, wherein the first and the second surfaces are planar, and at least one of the first surface and the second surface is non perpendicularly oriented relative to the axis, to reduce angular velocity of the outer shell as it moves from the first position to the second position.
  2. 5
The protective headwear of any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein both the first surface and the second surface are non-perpendicularly oriented relative to the axis.
  3. 6
The protective headwear of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the axis extends through the first portion and the second portion.
  4. 7
The protective headwear of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the first portion defines a first aperture therein and the second portion defines a second aperture therein, wherein the axis aligns with and extends through the first and second apertures.
  5. 8
The protective headwear of any one of claims I to 7, wherein the member provides a normal force to the outer shell with the outer shell moving from the first position to the second position.
  6. 10
The protective headwear of any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein the member does not reduce angular velocity of the outer shell relative to the headwear with the outer shell moving from the second position to the first position. CA 2965993 2018-09-17
  7. 11
The protective headwear of any one of claims 1 to 10, further comprising a coupling member coupled to and rotatable with the outer shell, wherein the coupling member includes one of the first portion and the second portion of the member.
  8. 14
The protective headwear of any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein the support member is headwear including at least one strap.
  9. 15
The protective headwear of any one of claims I to 14, wherein the protective headwear is a welding helmet.
  10. 16
A protective headwear comprising:a support member configured to engage a user's head;an outer shell coupled to the support member and rotatable relative to the support member between a first position and a second position;and a member coupled between the support member and the outer shell to reduce angular velocity of the outer shell as it moves from the first position to the second position;CA 2965993 2018-09-17 wherein the member includes a first portion and a second portion formed separately from each other and moveable relative to each other as the outer shell moves from the first position to the second position;wherein the first portion includes a first surface and the second portion includes a second surface, wherein the first surface and the second surface directly engage each other.
