Optimal channel assignment for multi-class, multi-channel wireless lans and the like

Abstract

The present application discloses, inter alia, a system for improving the aggregate throughput of a wireless local area network which includes at least one access point that is equipped with at least one transceiver configured to simultaneously transmit and receive at multiple frequencies using multiple channels, and the access point being configured to acquire channel conditions users and to pool sets of users on the channels based on the channel conditions.

CA 02886341 2015-03-27 .64 1. A system for improving the aggregate throughput of a wireless local area network, comprising:a) at least one access point that is equipped with at least one transceiver configured to simultaneously transmit and receive using multiple channels (C);b) said at least one access point being configured to acquire channel conditions of respective wireless mobile users, including said access point being aware of application traffic of said respective wireless mobile users and determining resource consumption needed for said respective users, c) said at least one access point being configured to pool sets of users on said channels based on said channel conditions of said respective wireless mobile users, using a heuristic algorithm including i) grouping said wireless mobile users into classes, with wireless mobile users having similar channel conditions being assigned to a specific one of said classes and with said classes being ranked based on resource consumption;ii) assigning each of said classes to respective ones of said channels, with some users of a higher ranked class being assigned to a channel assigned to said higher ranked class and with some users of said higher ranked class being assigned to share another channel assigned to a lower ranked class;CA 02886341 2015-03-27 .65 d) said access point being configured to assign channel access to users of a higher ranked class prior to users of a lower ranked class, such that when all available channels cannot accommodate all users, some users of said lower ranked class are not admitted channel access;and e) when said users can be admitted, said access point being configured to allocate on each channel as many users from a respective class as possible, including that when the number of users in said respective class is less than the channel capacity for that class, there is no spill-over traffic of calls, and all said users in said respective class are allocated to that channel.

    6. A method for improving performance of a wireless local area network, comprising:a) having an access point simultaneously transmit and receive communications on multiple channels;b) segregating users accessing said access point onto different ones of said channels based on differences in strengths of the users’ channel conditions using a heuristic algorithm including grouping said users into classes, with users having similar channel conditions being assigned to a specific one of said classes and with said classes being ranked based on resource consumption;c) assigning each of said classes to respective ones of said channels, with some users of a higher ranked class being assigned to a channel assigned to said higher ranked class and with some CA 02886341 2015-03-27 .67 users of said higher ranked class being assigned to share another channel assigned to a lower ranked class;and d) assigning channel access to users of a higher ranked class prior to users of a lower ranked class, such that when all available channels cannot accommodate all users, some users of said lower ranked class are not admitted channel access;and e) which said users can be admitted, the access point allocating on each channel as many users from a respective class as possible, including that when the number of users in said respective class is less than the channel capacity for that class, there is no spill-over traffic of calls, and all said users in said respective class are allocated to that channel.
