Traffic management for base stations backhauled over data-capped network connections

Abstract

A network device 102a, 102b, 152, 158 connected to a base station via a backhaul connection 104a, 104b may be operable to determine whether the backhaul connection is congested. The determination may be based on a periodic data cap D imposed on the backhaul connections. In response to a determination that the backhaul connection is congested, the network device may configure one or more cellular communication parameters of one or more of the plurality of base stations. The determination may be based on one or more of: a total amount of data consumed over the backhaul connection during a current time period, a traffic load L on the backhaul connection, and an amount of time remaining T in the current time period.

  1. 1
What is claimed is:1. A method comprising: determining a maximum amount of data that a second service provider permits to be communicated over a network connection during a billing period, wherein said network connection is a backhaul connection between a core network of a first service provider and a first one of a plurality of small-cell base stations;determining, in a network device of the first service provider, that a total amount of data communicated over said network connection during a current billing period will exceed said maximum amount of data when M is greater than (D-B)/T, where: M is a traffic load on said network connection communicated by said second service provider providing at least two services;D is a periodic data cap imposed by said second service provider on said network connection;B is a total amount of data consumed by a selected one of the at least two services provided by the second service provider over said network connection during said current billing period;and T is an amount of time remaining in said current billing period, measured in units of time;and in response to said determining that said total amount of data communicated over said network connection during said current billing period will exceed said maximum amount of data, reconfiguring a value of one or more cellular communication parameters utilized by one or more of said plurality of small-cell base stations.
  2. 3
A method comprising:determining, in a network device, whether a backhaul connection between a core network of a first service provider and a first base station is congested, said backhaul connection determined to be congested when M is greater than (D-B)/T, where: M is a traffic load on said backhaul connection communicated by a second service provider providing at least two services;D is a periodic data cap imposed by said second service provider on said backhaul connection;B is a total amount of data consumed by a selected one of the at least two services provided by the second service provider over said backhaul connection during a current time period;and T is an amount of time remaining in said current time period, measured in units of time;and in response to a determination that said backhaul connection is congested, performing, by said network device, a configuration of a value of one or more cellular communication parameters utilized by said first base station.
  3. 12
A system comprising:a network device coupled to a first base station via a backhaul connection, said network device being configured to: determine whether said backhaul connection between a core network of a first service provider and the first base station is congested, said backhaul connection determined to be congested when M is greater than (D-B/T, where: M is a traffic load on said backhaul connection communicated by a second service provider providing at least two services;D is a periodic data cap imposed by said second service provider on said backhaul connection;B is a total amount of data consumed by a selected one of the at least two services provided by the second service provider over said backhaul connection during a current time period;and CA 02884147 2016-10-24 T is an amount of time remaining in said current time period, measured in units of time;and in response to a determination that said backhaul connection is congested, configure one or more cellular communication parameters utilized by said first base station.
  4. 17
A method comprising:receiving, at a network device, a connection request from a mobile device to allow connection of the mobile device to a core network of a first service provider through a first base station;determining, by the network device, whether a first backhaul connection between the core network of the first service provider and the first base station is congested, the first backhaul connection determined to be congested when Li is greater than (Di-Bi)/Ti, where: CA 02884147 2016-10-24 Li is a traffic load on the first backhaul connection communicated by a second service provider providing at least two services;Di is a periodic data cap imposed by the second service provider on the first backhaul connection;Bi is a total amount of data consumed by a selected one of the at least two services provided by the second service provider over the first backhaul connection during a current time period;and Ti is an amount of time remaining in the current time period, measured in units of time;and when the network device determines the first backhaul connection is congested, preventing, by the network device, the first base station from connecting the mobile device to the core network.
  5. 27
A system comprising:one or more network processing devices executing a base station manager, the base station manager: receiving a connection request from a mobile device to allow connection of the mobile device to a core network of a first service provider through a first base station;determining whether the first backhaul connection between the core network of the first service provider and the first base station is congested, the first backhaul connection determined to be congested when Li is greater than (D1-B1 )/Tj, where: Li is a traffic load on the first backhaul connection communicated by a second service provider providing at least two services;Di is a periodic data cap imposed by the second service provider on the first backhaul connection;CA 02884147 2016-10-24 Bi is a total amount of data consumed by a selected one of the at least two services provided by the second service provider over the first backhaul connection during a current time period;and Ti is an amount of time remaining in e current time period, measured in units of time;and when the base station manager determines the first backhaul connection is congested, the base station manager prevents the first base station from connecting the mobile device to the core network.
  6. 37
A method comprising:receiving, at a network device, a connection request from a mobile device to allow connection of the mobile device to a core network of a first service provider through a first base station;determining, by the network device, whether a first backhaul connection between the core network of the first service provider and the first base station is congested, the first backhaul connection determined to be congested when Li is greater than M*S, where: Li is a traffic load on the first backhaul connection;S is a scaling factor;and M is a maximum permitted load on the first backhaul connection;and when the network device determines the first backhaul connection is congested, preventing, by the network device, the first base station from connecting the mobile device to the core network.
