A surface cleaning apparatus comprising: a) a dirty air inlet, a clean air outlet and an air flow path extending therebetween;b) a cyclonic cleaning unit comprising: i) a first cyclone cleaning stage positioned in the air flow path;ii) a second cyclone cleaning stage positioned in the air flow path downstream from the first cyclone cleaning stage;iii) a third cyclone cleaning stage positioned in the air flow path downstream from the second cyclone cleaning stage;and c) a suction motor positioned in the air flow path downstream from the cyclonic cleaning unit, wherein a portion of the airflow path extending between the cyclonic cleaning unit and the suction motor is free from filters whereby air travels from the cyclonic cleaning unit without passing through a filter and wherein each of the cyclone cleaning stages has an upper end and the upper end of the second cyclone stage is wider than the upper end of the first stage.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 1 - 5, wherein the cyclone cleaning stages are exterior to each other.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 1 - 5, wherein the cyclone cleaning stages are nested.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 2-7, wherein the upper end of the second cyclone stage is above the upper end of the first cyclone stage and the upper end of the third cyclone stage is above the upper end of the second cyclone stage.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 2 - 7, wherein the third cyclone stage is wider than the upper end of the first stage.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 2 - 5, wherein each of the cyclones of the second and third cyclone cleaning stage has an upper end having an air inlet and an air outlet and a lower end having a dirt outlet.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 6-10, wherein the second cyclone cleaning stage comprises a first plurality of cyclones in parallel and the third cyclone cleaning stage comprises a second plurality of cyclones in parallel, CA 02880934 2015-09-02 -81and each of the cyclones of the second and third cyclone cleaning stage has an upper end having an air inlet and an air outlet and a lower end having a dirt outlet.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 2 - 5, 11, 13 and 14 wherein the cyclones of the second cyclone cleaning stage have an internal diameter greater than 1 inch and an air inlet passage that has a width that is between a third and a fifth of the internal diameter.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 6-10, wherein the second cyclone cleaning stage comprises a first plurality of cyclones in parallel, and the cyclones of the second cyclone cleaning stage have an internal diameter greater than 1 inch and an air inlet passage that has a width that is between a third and a fifth of the internal diameter.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 6 -10, 11, 13, and 14 wherein the second cyclone cleaning stage comprises a first plurality of cyclones in parallel, and the cyclones of the second cyclone cleaning stage have an internal diameter less than or equal to 1 inch and an air inlet passage that has a width that is between a fifth and a fifteenth of the internal diameter.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 19 - 20, wherein the cyclones have a height that is more than 4 times the height of the inlet passage.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 2 -5, wherein the cyclones of the third cyclone cleaning stage have an internal diameter greater than 1 inch and an air inlet passage that has a width that is between a third and a fifth of the internal diameter.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 6-11, wherein the third cyclone cleaning stage comprises a plurality of cyclones in parallel, and the cyclones of the third cyclone cleaning stage have an internal diameter greater than 1 inch and an air inlet passage that has a width that is between a third and a fifth of the internal diameter.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 23 - 25, wherein the cyclones have a height that is more than 4 times the height of the inlet passage.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 2 - 5, wherein the cyclones of the third cyclone cleaning stage have an internal diameter less than or equal to 1 inch and an air inlet passage that has a width that is between a fifth and a fifteenth of the internal diameter.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 6-11, wherein the third cyclone cleaning stage comprises a plurality of cyclones in parallel, and the cyclones of the third cyclone cleaning stage have an internal diameter less than or equal to 1 inch and an air inlet passage that has a width that is between a fifth and a fifteenth of the internal diameter.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 27 - 29, wherein the cyclones have a height that is more than 4 times the height of the inlet passage.

    The surface cleaning apparatus of any one of claims 1-39, wherein the first cyclone cleaning stage comprises a sidewall and an end wall and the end wall is openable whereby the first cyclone cleaning stage is opened for emptying.
