Encryption/decryption of program data but not psi data

Abstract

The use of keys to encrypt data in a transmitter and to decrypt encrypted data in a receiver are synchronized in accordance with a synchronization signal that opportunistically replaces a null packet in an MPEG transport stream. Additionally or alternatively, key related information is transmitted and/or received in place of a null packet in the MPEG transport stream and is used to encrypt and/or decrypt data transmitted and/or received in the MPEG transport stream.

  1. 1
CA 02873159 2014-12-03 73596-88D5 CLAIMS :1. An encryption and synchronization method implemented in a transmitter comprising: encrypting data in an MPEG transport stream in accordance with first data keys;transmitting the encrypted data to a receiver;generating second data keys while the data is encrypted with the first data keys;determining an occurrence of a first null packet in the MPEG transport stream;replacing the first null packet with a data key signal containing the second data keys;transmitting the data key signal to the receiver;subsequent to the transmission of the data key signal, determining an occurrence of a second null packet in the MPEG transport stream;replacing the second null packet with an encrypted synchronizing signal, wherein the encrypted synchronizing signal instructs the receiver to switch use from the first data keys to the second data keys in the decryption of data in the MPEG transport stream;and transmitting the encrypted synchronizing signal to the receiver.
  2. 7
A method implemented by a receiver of decrypting encrypted data comprising:decrypting data in an MPEG transport stream by use of first data keys;receiving a data key signal containing second data keys in place of a first null packet in the MPEG transport stream while data in the MPEG transport stream, is being decrypted by use of the first data keys;storing the second data keys;after receiving and storing the second data keys, receiving an encrypted synchronizing signal in place of a second null packet in the MPEG transport stream, wherein the encrypted synchronizing signal in place of the second null packet in the MPEG transport stream is received from a transmitter;decrypting the received encrypted synchronizing signal;switching, in response to the decrypted received synchronization signal, from use of the first data keys to use of the second data keys in order to decrypt data in the MPEG transport stream;and replacing the encrypted synchronizing signal received in the MPEG transport stream by a' null packet.
  3. 10
A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having program code stored thereon, wherein the program code, 10 when executed, performs the following functions:encrypting data in the MPEG transport stream in accordance with first data keys;transmitting the data encrypted with the first data key to the receiver;generating second data keys while the data is encrypted with the first data keys;determining an occurrence 15 of a fi rst null packet in the MPEG transport stream;replacing the first null packet with a data key signal containing the second data keys;transmitting the data key signal to the receiver;subsequent to the transmission of the data key signal, determining an occurrence of a second null packet in an 20 MPEG transport stream;replacing the second null packet with a synchronizing signal;transmitting the synchronizing signal to a receiver;switching encryption of data in the MPEG transport stream from the first data keys to the second data keys upon transmission of the synchronizing signal to the receiver;and, 25 transmitting the data encrypted with the second data key to the receiver.
  4. 13
A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having program code stored thereon, wherein the program code, when executed, performs the following functions:decrypting data in an MPEG transport stream using a first data key;receiving a data key signal containing a second data key in place of a first null packet in the MPEG transport stream while data in the MPEG transport stream is being decrypted by use of the first data key;storing the second data key;after receiving and storing the second data keys, receiving a synchronizing signal in place of a second null packet in an MPEG transport stream, wherein the synchronizing signal is received from a transmitter;receiving encrypted data in the MPEG transport stream, wherein the encrypted data in the MPEG transport stream is received from the transmitter;and, upon receipt of the synchronizing signal, switching use from the first data key to the second data key to decrypt the received encrypted data in the MPEG transport stream;and, replacing the encrypted synchronizing signal received in the MPEG transport stream by a null packet.
