Catv video and data transmission system with automatic parameter control

Abstract

Improved systems and methods for delivering CATV content over a fiber optic network from a transmitter. The transmitter preferably monitors performance attributes of a transmitted signal and selectively configures the transmitter based on the monitored attributes.

  1. 1
CA 02846544 2016-12-15 What is claimed is:1. A head end transmitter for processing a signal for propagation down a fiber optical link in a transmission system, the transmitter comprising: an input for receiving a radio frequency (RF) spectrum including a plurality of channels of cable television (CATV) content processed by a head end device;an output for emitting a digital bit stream into a network to at least one node over a fiber optic link, said digital bit stream representing said entire RF spectrum of said plurality of channels of CATV content input to said head end transmitter;a transmit subsystem operatively located between said input and said output, the transmit subsystem comprising: an analog-to-digital converter for digital conversion of the entire RF spectrum to the digital bit stream;a forward error correction encoder for forward error correction encoding of bits of the digital bit stream;at least one software routine which, when executed by the transmit subsystem, causes the transmit subsystem to: monitor performance attributes of the transmission system;evaluate one or more dependencies between the analog-to-digital converter and forward error correction module on the performance attributes of the transmission system to determine whether to adjust at least one digital parameter of at least one of the analog-to-digital converter or forward error correction module, wherein adjustment of said at least one digital parameter changes said performance attributes.
  2. 8
A method of configuring a head end transmitter, at a head end, that emits a cable television (CATV) signal into a transmission network to at least one node, said method comprising:receiving, at the head end transmitter, a radio frequency (RF) spectrum including a plurality of channels of CATV content;emitting a digital bit stream from said head end transmitter into a network for transmission to at least one node over a fiber optic link, said digital bit stream representing said entire RF spectrum of said plurality of channels of CATV content;monitoring at least one first performance attribute of said digital bit stream;evaluating one or more dependencies between an analog-to-digital conversion and a forward error correction based on one or more digital parameters of the analog-to-digital converter or forward error correction module;and responsive to the monitored at least one first performance attribute of said signal and the one or more dependencies evaluated between the analog-to-digital converter and the forward error correction module, configuring said transmitter to improve at least one second performance attribute of said transmitter. 3. 15
A method of configuring a transmitter, at a head end, that emits a cable television (CATV) signal into a transmission network to at least one node, said method comprising:receiving an entire radio frequency (RF) spectrum including CATV content over a plurality of channels;emitting a digital bit stream into a network to at least one node over a fiber optic link, said digital bit stream representing a digitization of the entire RF spectrum of said CATV content received;monitoring at least one first performance attribute of said digital bit stream ;CA 02846544 2016-12-15 evaluating one or more dependencies between an analog-to-digital conversion and a forward error correction based on one or more digital parameters of an analog-to-digital converter or forward error correction module;and responsive to the monitored at least one performance attribute of said signal and the one or more dependencies evaluated between the analog-to-digital converter and the forward error correction module, selectively modulating a data rate of said signal over the full range of 256 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) to 1024 QAM.
