System and method for synchronizing operations among a plurality of independently clocked digital data processing devices

Abstract

In a network comprising at least a first zone player and a second zone player, a method comprises a user interface module, a command to establish a synchrony group, wherein the synchrony goup comprises at least the first zone player and the second zone player; and displaying, at the user interface module, a list of information identifying a plurality of items queued for playback by the synchrony group, wherein (i) at least one of the items on the list is located on the local area network, and (ii) at least one of the items on the list is accessible via a wide area network.

  1. 1
CA 02842342 2016-10-04 -49 What is claimed is:1. A networked audio playback device comprising: an audio information source interface configured to receive a first audio signal comprising first audio information from an audio information source directly connected to the networked audio playback device;a network interface that connects the networked audio playback device to a network and configured to receive packets from the network containing second audio information and playback timing information from a network audio information source;a digital to analog converter (DAC) for generating an analog audio signal based on either the first audio information or the second audio information;an audio amplifier interconnected with the DAC and configured to amplify the audio signal;an audio reproduction device interface interconnected with the audio amplifier;and a control module configured to receive a command via a network interface and to provide to the DAC, based on the received command, one of the first audio information or the second audio information, wherein the networked audio playback device is further configured for: converting at least a portion of the first audio signal into a first plurality of packets comprising the first audio information;generating first timing information for the first audio information;transmitting the first plurality of packets and the first timing information associated with the first audio information to a second audio playback device via the network;and switching between generating an analog audio signal based on the first audio information in synchrony with the second playback device and generating an analog audio signal based on the second audio information.
  2. 5
    6. The networked audio playback device of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the received packets containing the second audio information and the playback timing information are addressed using a multicast address.
  3. 6
    7. The playback device of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the received packets containing the second audio information and the playback timing information are addressed using a unicast address.
  4. 7
    8. A method comprising:receiving a first audio signal comprising first audio information at a first audio playback device from an audio information source connected to the first audio playback device;converting at least a portion of the first audio signal into a first plurality of packets comprising the first audio information;generating first timing information for the first audio information;transmitting the first plurality of packets and the first timing information associated with the first audio information to a second audio playback device via a network;generating a first analog audio signal for playback based on the first audio information in synchrony with the second audio playback device;receiving second audio information and playback timing information contained in data packets from a network audio information source via a network interface;receiving commands contained in data packets via the network interface;and based on the received commands, switching to generating a second analog audio signal for playback based on the second audio information, and terminating the playback of the first audio signal. 5. 10
    11. The method of any one of claims 8 to 10, further comprising determining a time differential between the network audio information source and a DAC converter clock.
  6. 12
    13. The method of any one of claims 8 to 12, wherein the received packets containing the second audio information and the playback timing information are addressed using a multicast address.
  7. 13
    14. The method of any one of claims 8 to 12, wherein the received packets containing the second audio information and the playback timing information are addressed using a unicast address.
  8. 14
    15. A tangible computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that when executed cause a device to:receive a first audio signal comprising first audio information in the form of digital samples derived from an audio information source connected to a first audio playback device;convert at least a portion of the first audio signal into a first plurality of packets comprising the first audio information;generate first timing information for the first audio information;transmit the first plurality of packets and the first timing information associated with the first audio information to a second audio playback device via a network;provide the first audio information to a digital to analog converter to generate a first analog audio signal for playback and playing back the first audio information in synchrony with the second audio playback device;receive second audio information and playback timing information contained in data packets from a network audio information source via a network interface;CA 02842342 2016-10-04 -52receive commands contained in data packets via the network interface;and based on the received commands, provide the second audio information to a digital to analog converter (DAC) to generate a second analog audio signal for playback and terminating playback of the first audio signal.
  9. 17
    18. The computer-readable medium of any one of claims 15 to 17, wherein the commands are received from a user interface module.
  10. 19
    20. The computer-readable medium of any one of claims 15 to 19, wherein the received packets containing the second audio information and the playback timing information are addressed using either a unicast or a multicast address.
