Instrument for intra-operative implant templating using fluoroscopy

Abstract

A surgical instrument having a first assembly with a first radio-opaque portion providing a profile of a first portion of an intramedullary implant or canal in a bone, and a second assembly having a second radio-opaque portion providing a profile of a second portion of the intramedullary implant or canal. The surgical instrument may also include a third radio-opaque portion providing an alignment feature to provide a fluoroscopic planar check for the surgical instrument.

CA 02836282 2013-12-11 PATENT E3383-00238 What is claimed is:1. A surgical instrument comprising: (a) a first assembly having a first radio-opaque portion providing a profile of a first portion of an intramedullary implant or canal in a bone;and (b) a second assembly having a second radio-opaque portion providing a profile of a second portion of the intramedullary implant or canal.
  2. 2
The surgical instrument of Claim 1 wherein the first or second portions of the intramedullary implant or canal is a stem of the implant or a section of the canal which accepts an implant, respectively.
  3. 3
The surgical instrument of Claim 1 further comprising a third radio-opaque portion providing an alignment feature for the surgical instrument.
  4. 4
The surgical instrument of Claim 3 wherein the alignment feature comprises a peg and ring circumscribing the peg upon alignment to provide a fluoroscopic indication of a proper planar view for the surgical instrument.
  5. 5
The surgical instrument of Claim 1 wherein the second assembly further comprises a hole for attaching an extra-medullary alignment rod.
  6. 6
The surgical instrument of Claim 1 further comprising a lateral segment adaptable to attach an additional first assembly and an additional second assembly to the instrument, the additional first and second assemblies providing a profile of the implant or canal in a different plane.
  7. 7
The surgical instrument of Claim 1 further comprising a resection guide.
  8. 8
The surgical instrument of Claim 1 further comprising a drill guide.
  9. 9
The surgical instrument of Claim 1 wherein the bone is selected form the group consisting of the tibia, femur, humerus, radius, ulna, vertebrae, fibula.
  10. 10
A surgical instrument comprising:(a) a first module having a first radio-opaque portion providing a profile for an intramedullary implant or canal in a bone;and (b) a second module having a second radio-opaque portion providing a profile for the intramedullary implant or canal in the bone, DM2\3669687.2 CA 02836282 2013-12-11 PATENT E3383-00238 wherein the first and second modules provide an alignment check for the implant or canal in two different planes.
  11. 11
The surgical instrument of Claim 10 wherein the first of the two planes is a coronal plane and the second of the two planes is a sagittal plane.
  12. 12
The surgical instrument of Claim 10 where the first and second modules each comprise:(i) a first assembly having a third radio-opaque portion providing a profile of a first portion of an intramedullary implant or canal in a bone;and (ii) a second assembly having fourth and fifth radio-opaque portions, the fourth radio-opaque portion providing an alignment feature for the surgical instrument and the fifth radio-opaque portion providing a profile of a second portion of the intramedullary implant or canal, wherein the third, fourth and fifth radio-opaque portions are subsets of the respective first and second radio-opaque portions.
  13. 13
The surgical instrument of Claim 12 wherein the alignment feature comprises a peg and ring circumscribing the peg upon alignment to provide a fluoroscopic indication of a proper planar view of the instrument.
  14. 14
The surgical instrument of Claim 10 wherein the first or second module further comprises a hole for attaching extra-medullary alignment rod.
  15. 15
The surgical instrument of Claim 10 further comprising a resection guide.
  16. 16
The surgical instrument of Claim 10 further comprising a drill guide.
  17. 17
The surgical instrument of Claim 10 wherein the bone is selected form the group consisting of the tibia, femur, humerus, radius, ulna, vertebrae, fibula.
  18. 18
A surgical instrument comprising:(a) a first assembly having a first radio-opaque portion providing a profile of a first portion of an intramedullary implant or canal in a bone;and (b) a second assembly having a second radio-opaque portion providing an alignment feature for the surgical instrument. DM2 3669687.2 CA 02836282 2013-12-11 PATENT E3383-00238
