A prosthetic device having regions of varying stretch and method of manufacturing the same

Abstract

A biocompatible surgical scaffold made from a multi-filament silk yarn for soft tissue reconstruction. The scaffold incorporates regions of varying stretch having different physical and mechanical properties that allow contouring to the required soft tissue shape to be replaced or repaired. The porous structure allows tissue in-growth, while the mesh degrades at a rate which allows for a smooth transfer of mechanical properties to the new tissue from the silk scaffold.

A biocompatible surgical scaffold made of a multi-filament silk yam for soft tissue reconstruction or repair, the biocompatible surgical scaffold comprising:regions of differing stretch to contour to a soft tissue shape for replacement or repair;wherein at least two regions parallel to each other differ in mechanical properties comprising a stretchy region and a stiffer region and wherein the stretchy region has lower stiffness and higher flexibility than the stiffer region, and wherein the biocompatible surgical silk scaffold is knitted.
