Aircraft window and installation method

Abstract

There is a need for a window and related installation method that simplifies the installation process and improves the seal around the structural window of an aircraft. Accordingly, an aircraft window comprises an outer window assembly including a structural window having a plurality of brackets around a perimeter of the outer window assembly, an inner window assembly, a seal adapted to seal a perimeter of the inner window assembly against the outer window assembly, and a plurality of retaining features around a perimeter of the structural window for retaining the inner window assembly on the outer window assembly and for forcing the seal against the structural window. The retaining features include a plurality of interlocking clips and receptacles, each receptacle being mounted on one of the plurality of brackets and having a socket, and each clip including a plug receivable in a snap-fit relationship within a corresponding one of the sockets.

    What is claimed is:1. An aircraft window, comprising: an outer window assembly including a structural window having a plurality of brackets around a perimeter of the outer window assembly;an inner window assembly;a seal adapted to seal a perimeter of the inner window assembly against the outer window assembly;and a plurality of retaining features around a perimeter of the structural window for retaining the inner window assembly on the outer window assembly and for forcing the seal against the structural window, the retaining features including a plurality of interlocking clips and receptacles, each receptacle being mounted on one of the plurality of brackets and having a socket, and each clip including a plug receivable in a snap-fit relationship within a corresponding one of the sockets.

    The aircraft window of ciaim 1 or 2, wherein each of the receptacles includes a flexible guide for guiding the plug into the socket.

    The aircraft window of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein each of the clips includes:a first end, the plug being disposed at the first end;and a second end, having a tab to which force is applied to snap the plug into the socket.

    The aircraft window of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein each plug and socket are elongate, and each socket is open at opposing ends thereof, allowing the plug to be held in any of a plurality of longitudinal positions within the socket. A window for an aircraft fuselage, comprising:a window frame, adapted to be secured to the fuselage, having a plurality of brackets mounted around a periphery thereof;an outer structural window mounted on the window frame;an inner window, spaced inboard of the outer structural window to form a window cavity between the inner window and the outer structural window;a seal extending around the window cavity for sealing the window cavity;and a plurality of retaining features for retaining the inner window on the window frame, each retaining feature including a plurality of spring clips respectively mounted on the brackets, a receptacle on each of the spring clips, a plurality of retention clips attached to the seal, and a plug on an end of each of the retention clips that snaps into one of the receptacles.

    10. The window of any one of claims 7 to 9, wherein each of the clips includes:a first end, the plug being disposed at the first end;and a second end, having a tab to which a force is applied to snap the first end into the receptacle.

    11. The window of any one of claims 7 to 10, wherein each of the receptacles is configured to accommodate variations in a position of the corresponding clip during installation of the inner window on the window frame.

    12. The window of any one of claims 7 to 11, wherein each of the receptacles includes a flexible guide for guiding the plug into the receptacle.

    13. The window of any one of claims 7 to 11, wherein each of the receptacles includes flexible guides on opposite sides of an opening in the receptacle for guiding the plug into the receptacle.

    14. The window of any one of claims 7 to 13, wherein each plug and receptacle are elongate, and the socket is open at opposing ends thereof, allowing the plug to be held in any of a plurality of longitudinal positions within the receptacle. CA 2829212 2018-09-17

A window comprising:a structural window;a window frame around the structural window;at least one flexible receptacle mounted on the window frame, the receptacle including a socket having a maximum internal width and an opening having a width that is less than the maximum internal width;and a window assembly including at least one retention clip insertable into the receptacle for retaining the window assembly on the window frame during installation of the window assembly on the window frame, the retention clip including a plug having a width greater than the width of the opening in the socket.

    18. The window of any one of claims 15 to 17, farther comprising:at least one bracket attached to the window frame;and a deformable spring member mounted on the bracket, wherein the receptacle is mounted on an end of the spring member.

An aircraft window, comprising:an outer window assembly;an inner window assembly adapted to be installed on the outer window assembly;a seal adapted to be compressed between the inner and outer window assemblies;and a plurality of retaining features for retaining the inner window assembly on the outer window assembly, the retaining features including a plurality of receptacles, mounted on the outer window assembly, and a plurality of retention clips, attached to the seal, each retention clip having a plug adapted to be snapped into one of the receptacles, the retaining features being configured to produce an audible indication when the seal has been sufficiently compressed during installation.

    23. The aircraft window of any one of claims 19 to 22, wherein each piug and receptacle are elongate, and each receptacle is open at opposing ends thereof, allowing the plug to be held in any of a plurality of longitudinal positions within the receptacle.

A window for an aircraft fuselage, comprising:an outer window assembly, including: a window frame adapted to be mounted on the fuselage;an outboard structural window mounted on the window frame;a seal between the window frame and the outboard window;a plurality of brackets on the window frame around the periphery of the outboard window;a plurality of spring clips respectively secured to the brackets;a flexible receptacle mounted on each of the spring clips;and a socket with a socket opening;and an inner window assembly adapted to be installed on the outer window assembly, the inner window assembly including: an inboard window spaced inboard of the outboard window to form a cavity between the inboard and outboard windows when the inner window is installed on the outer window assembly;a compressible seal around the periphery of the window for sealing the cavity;and a plurality of elongate retention clips respectively associated with the spring clips to form locking devices connecting the inner window assembly with the outer window assembly, the retention clips being bonded to the seal and spaced around the periphery of the inboard window assembly, each of the retention clips having a finger tab on one end thereof and a plug on the opposite end thereof, and each of the plugs being receivable in snap-fit relationship in a socket of a corresponding one of the receptacles. A method of installing a window on an aircraft fuselage, comprising:mounting a window frame, having a perimeter, on an inner surface of the fuselage;installing a plurality of receptacles on the window frame around a perimeter of the window frame;installing a seal on a window assembly;mounting a plurality of retention clips on the window assembly;and installing the window assembly on the window frame by inserting a plug on each of the retention clips into a socket on a corresponding one of the receptacles by applying a force to one end of the retention clip.

    28. The method of any one of claims 25 to 27, wherein mounting the plurality of retention clips on the window assembly comprises attaching the retention clips to the seal.

    29. The method of any one of claims 25 to 28, wherein the retention clips are moveable within the receptacles during the insertion and the method further comprises:centering the window assembly on the frame during installation.

The method in accordance with claim 25, wherein mounting the window frame on the fuselage further comprises;mounting an outboard structural window on the window frame;placing a first seal between the outboard window and the window frame;mounting a plurality of brackets on the window frame;mounting a plurality of spring clips respectively on the brackets;and mounting a receptacle on an end of each of the spring clips.     31. The method in accordance with claim 30, wherein the force is applied to one end of the retention clip until an audible snap is produced.

The method in accordance with claim 25, wherein the window assembly includes an inner window, and the seal is attached to the inner window, and further comprising:mounting the window assembly on a sidewall panel of the fuselage;attaching the plurality of retention clips to the seal;aligning the window assembly with the window frame;and placing the window assembly against the window frame.

The method in accordance with claim 32, wherein installing the window assembly on the window frame comprises inserting a plug on each of the retention clips into a socket on a corresponding one of the receptacles by applying a force to one end of the retention clip until an audible snap is produced.

The method in accordance with claim 32, wherein installing the window assembly on the window frame comprises:aligning each retention clip with a respective one of the plurality of the receptacles;and depressing tabs on the retention clips to force plugs on the clips into sockets on the receptacles.

A method of installing a window assembly on an aircraft fuselage, comprising:mounting a window frame, having a perimeter, on an interior surface of the fuselage;installing a plurality of receptacles around the perimeter of the window frame on the interior surface of the fuselage;installing a seal on a window assembly;mounting a plurality of retention clips on the window assembly;and inserting each retention clip into a respective one of the receptacles, to attach the window assembly to the window frame.

The method in accordance with claim 35, wherein installing the window assembly on the frame includes:aligning each retention clip with a respective one of the plurality of the receptacles;and depressing tabs on the retention clips to force plugs on the clips into sockets on the receptacles.     37. The method in accordance with claim 36, wherein depressing the tabs is continued until an audible snap is produced by the receipt of the plugs into the sockets.

    38. The method in accordance with any one of claims 35 to 37, wherein mounting the plurality of retention clips on the window assembly comprises attaching the retention clips to the seal.

    39. The method in accordance with any one of claims 35 to 38, further comprising centering the window assembly on the frame during the installation by causing the retention clips to move within the receptacles during insertion.

A method of installing a window on a fuselage of an aircraft, comprising:assembling an outer window assembly by: mounting a window frame on the fuselage;mounting an outboard structural window on the window frame;placing a first seal between the outboard window and the window frame;mounting a plurality of brackets on the window frame;mounting a plurality of spring clips respectively on the brackets;and mounting a receptacle on an end of each of the spring clips;assembling an inner window assembly by: mounting an inner window on a sidewall panel of the fuselage;attaching a second seal to the inner window;and attaching a plurality of retention clips to the second seal;aligning the inner and outer window assemblies;placing the inner window assembly on the outer window assembly;and inserting a plug on each of the retention clips into a socket on a corresponding one of the receptacles by applying a force to one end of the retention clip until an audible snap is produced, to attach the inner window assembly to the outer window assembly.

    41. The method in accordance with claim 40, wherein applying the force to one end of the retention clip comprises depressing a tab on the one end of the retention clip to force the plug into the respective socket.

An aircraft window, comprising:an outer window assembly including a window;an inner window assembly;a seal adapted to seal a perimeter of the inner window assembly against the outer window assembly;and a plurality of retaining features around the perimeter of the window for retaining the inner window assembly on the outer window assembly and for forcing the seal against the window, wherein each of the retaining features comprises an interlocking clip and receptacle and each of the clips comprises: a first end having a plug insertable into a corresponding receptacle;and a second end having a tab configured to receive a force to snap the plug into the receptacle.

    46. The aircraft window of any one of claims 43 to 45, wherein each of the receptacles comprises a flexible guide for guiding the plug of the clip into the receptacle.

A method of installing a window on an aircraft fuselage, comprising:mounting a window frame on the fuselage;installing a plurality of receptacles on the window frame around a perimeter of the window frame;installing a seal on a window assembly;mounting a plurality of retention clips on the window assembly;and installing the window assembly on the window frame by respectively inserting the retention clips into the receptacles, wherein installing the window assembly on the frame comprises: aligning the retention clips respectively with the receptacles;and depressing tabs on the retention clips to force plugs on the retention clips into sockets on the receptacles.

    52. The method of any one of claims 49 to 51, further comprising centering the windowassembly on the frame during installation by allowing the retention clips to move within the receptacles during the installation.
