Fully automatic self-service key duplicating kiosk

Abstract

A self-service, fully-automatic kiosk for duplicating keys includes a kiosk housing having a customer interface for receiving payment from a customer for the purchase of at least one duplicate of the customer's key. A key-receiving entry in the housing receives at least a portion of the customer's key to be duplicated, and a key analysis system within the housing analyzes the blade of a key inserted in the key-receiving entry to determine whether the inserted key matches one of a group of preselected key types and, if so, which preselected key type is matched. A key blank magazine within the housing stores key blanks for each of the preselected key types. A key blank extraction system extracts from the magazine a key blank for the preselected key type matched by the blade of the key inserted in the key-receiving entry. Then a key duplicating system within the kiosk replicates the tooth pattern of the blade of the key inserted in the key-receiving entry, on the blade of the extracted key blank.

  1. 1
CA 02801424 2014-11-26 The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:1. A network of self-service kiosks for duplicating keys, said network comprising: a multiplicity of said kiosks at different locations, and a remote central server coupled to said kiosks for receiving information from and sending information to said kiosks, each of said individual kiosks comprising: a kiosk housing having a customer interface for receiving payment from a customer for the purchase of at least one duplicate of the customer's key, a key-receiving entry in said housing for receiving at least a portion of the customer's key to be duplicated, a key analysis system within said housing for analyzing the blade of a key inserted in said key-receiving entry to determine whether the inserted key matches one of a group of preselected key types and, if so, which preselected key type is matched, a key blank magazine within said housing for storing key blanks for each of said preselected key types, a key blank extraction system for extracting from said magazine a key blank for the preselected key type matched by the blade of said key inserted in said key-receiving entry, a key duplicating system within said kiosk for replicating the tooth pattern of the blade of said key inserted in said key-receiving entry, on the blade of said extracted key blank, a processor within said kiosk and coupled to at least said customer interface, said key analysis system and said key blank extraction system, and a communications port coupled to said processor for communicating with said remote central server, wherein said communicating includes at least alert signals generated in response to operations conducted within the kiosk, said alert signals being generated automatically by each kiosk when a questionable condition is detected;and CA 02801424 2014-11-26 a digital video camera mounted in the interior of said kiosk for recording and transmitting video and photo images of different regions of the interior of said kiosk, a video output of the digital video camera being coupled to the communications port for transmission to the remote central server, wherein said video camera is remotely controllable for producing video images upon receipt of command signals from the remote central server, thereby allowing a remote monitoring of regions in the interior of the kiosk when alert signals are generated.
  2. 5
The network of self-service kiosks of any one of claims 1 to 4, in which said processors in said individual kiosks are programmed to transmit information to customer email addresses captured via said customer interfaces in said individual kiosks.
  3. 6
The network of self-service kiosks of any one of claims 1 to 5, in which said processors in said individual kiosks are programmed to transmit sales and transaction CA 02801424 2014-11-26 data and/or information regarding the status of multiple devices within said individual kiosks to said remote central server via said communications port.
  4. 7
The network of self-service kiosks of any one of claims 1 to 6, in which said customer interface includes a touch screen adapted to display options that the customer can select via a virtual keyboard.
  5. 8
The network of self-service kiosks of any one of claims 1 to 7, in which said communications with said remote central server include the types of key blanks selected by customers using each of said kiosks, and said remote central server contains information regarding the geographical location of each kiosk and the name of the store in which each kiosk is located so that said server can correlate types of key blanks selected by customers with geographical regions or store names.
  6. 9
The network of self-service kiosks of any one of claims 1 to 8, in which said processors in said individual kiosks are programmed to display purchase options for a customer while a key is being duplicated.
  7. 11
The network of self-service kiosks of any one of claims 1 to 10, in which return rates of duplicated keys are less than about 1%.
  8. 12
A method of duplicating keys in a network of self-service kiosks according to any one of claims 1 to 11, the kiosks being at different locations, each having a customer interface for receiving payment from a customer for the purchase of at least one duplicate of the customer's key, and a remote central server coupled to said kiosks for receiving information from and sending information to said kiosks, said method comprising:CA 02801424 2014-11-26 receiving at least a portion of the customer's key to be duplicated in a keyreceiving entry in said kiosks, analyzing the blade of said key inserted in said key-receiving entry and determining whether the inserted key matches one of a group of preselected key types and, if so, which preselected key type is matched, storing key blanks for each of said preselected key types in a key blank magazine within said kiosks, extracting from said magazine a key blank for the preselected key type matched by the blade of said key inserted in said key-receiving entry, replicating the tooth pattern of the blade of said key inserted in said key-receiving entry, on the blade of said extracted key blank, within said kiosks, providing customer access to the key with the replicated tooth pattern for removal from the kiosks, communicating with said remote central server remote from said kiosks, wherein said communicating includes at least alert signals generated in response to operations conducted within each of the kiosks, said alert signals being generated automatically by each kiosk when a questionable condition is detected, and remotely monitoring regions in the interior of the kiosk for which alert signals are generated using the digital video camera installed in the interior of said kiosk.
  9. 15
The method of any one of claims 12 to 14, further comprising receiving returns of duplicated keys at a rate of less than about 1%.
