System and method for configuring a rule set for medical event management and responses

Abstract

A system and method to configure a rule set used in con-nection with a medical monitoring system for monitoring patients and patient care equipment, especially medication delivery pumps, based on a variety of conditions and parameters associated with monitored bio-metric information and equipment information and for providing user--defined responses to those conditions and parameters.

  1. 1
A method of generating, storing and using a rule set in connection with an automated medical device within a medical system for medical event management, the steps of the method comprising:providing a context free grammar, the grammar comprising non-terminal parameter symbols and terminal parameter symbols that are configured to be satisfied by a plurality of non-terminal medical system parameters and terminal medical system parameters, respectively, the grammar further comprising non-terminal condition symbols and terminal condition symbols that are configured to be satisfied by a plurality of non-terminal medical system conditions and terminal medical system conditions, respectively, the grammar further comprising a response symbol that is configured to be satisfied by a plurality of medical system responses;receiving, by a rule set configuration processor, a first parameter selection comprising at least one of the non-terminal medical system parameters or at least one of the terminal medical system parameters, defined by the grammar;receiving, by said rule set configuration processor, a respective first medical system condition selection corresponding to the at least one of the non-terminal parameter symbol or terminal parameter symbol for the selected first parameter selection defined by the grammar;receiving, by said rule set configuration processor, a medical system response selection;generating the rule set from the first parameter selection, the first medical system condition selection, and the medical system response selection;storing in a computer readable memory the rule set for later use by said automated medical device wherein the rule set can be selected independently from other stored rule sets;monitoring in real-time, by one or more sensors, one or more biometric or physiological parameters and transmitting in real-time a data stream from said monitoring;implementing said rule set to process said real-time data stream;and if the rule set is satisfied, executing a pre-determined response;if the rule set is not satisfied, automatically changing to a second rule set and executing a second pre-determined response if the second rule set is satisfied;wherein each of the first parameter selection, the first medical system condition selection, and the medical system response selection is inputted by a user via a user interface. A method of medical event management related to use of an automated medical device within a medical system, said method comprising:Monitoring in real-time, by one or more sensors, one or more biometric or physiological parameters and transmitting in real-time a physiological condition data stream from said monitoring;receiving said real-time physiological condition data stream and sensor equipment information;receiving equipment information from the medical device;receiving in a computer readable memory a plurality of user customizable medical system rule sets available for selection, each of the rule sets being established by an authorized hospital user and being independently selectable without changing to a different protocol or personality of the medical device;selecting a rule set from the plurality of user customizable medical system rule sets stored in the computer readable memory;wherein each rule set of said plurality of user customizable medical system rule sets is generated and stored by: providing a context free grammar, the grammar comprising non-terminal parameter symbols and terminal parameter symbols that are configured to be satisfied by a plurality of non-terminal medical system parameters and terminal medical system parameters, respectively, the grammar further comprising non-terminal condition symbols and terminal condition symbols that are configured to be satisfied by a plurality of non-terminal medical system conditions and terminal medical system conditions, respectively, the grammar further comprising a response symbol that is configured to be satisfied by a plurality of medical system responses;receiving, by a rule set configuration processor, a first parameter selection comprising at least one of the non-terminal medical system parameters or at least one of the terminal medical system parameters, defined by the grammar;receiving, by said rule set configuration processor, a respective first medical system condition selection corresponding to the at least one of the non-terminal Date Reçue/Date Received 2022-01-14 parameter symbol or terminal parameter symbol for the selected first parameter selection defined by the grammar;receiving, by said rule set configuration processor, a medical system response selection;generating the rule set from the first parameter selection, the first medical system condition selection, and the medical system response selection;storing in the computer readable memory the rule set for later use by said automated medical device wherein the rule set can be selected independently from other stored rule sets;and implementing the selected rule set to process the real-time physiological condition data stream;and if the rule set is satisfied, executing a pre-determined response;if the rule set is not satisfied, automatically changing to a second rule set and executing a second pre-determined response if the second rule set is satisfied.
