Latex gloves and articles with geometrically defined surface texture providing enhanced grip and method for in-line processing thereof

Abstract

Latex articles with geometrically defined surface structure providing enhanced grip characteristics in dry, wet or oily environment; and a method of making same comprising applying a polymeric coagulant coating (12) to a smooth former surface (11), wherein the coating becomes tacky during drying, applying discrete coagulant particles (14) of selected size, shape and distribution to the tacky coating to attach and protrude from the former surface with the polymeric coagulant coating, dipping the former into an aqueous latex emulsion, wherein the polymeric coagulant coating the discrete coagulating particles destabilize the latex, thereby developing a latex layer, vulcanizing and stripping the latex article inside out, and dissolving the discrete coagulant particles in water or suitable solvents to reveal the geometrically designed texture with pre-selected size, shape and distribution of impressions providing improved dry, wet and oily surface grip by removal of a fluid boundary layer.

  1. 1
CA 02586580 2012-06-28 WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:1. A latex glove comprising an outer surface and an inner surface;said outer surface having a surface texture in a latex layer (21), said surface texture comprising a plurality of geometrically defined indentations (27) indicating sharply defined internal edges, wherein the indentations (27) have re-entrant surfaces such that the interior opening is larger than the surface opening of the indentation (27) on the outer surface of the glove, whereby the geometrically defined surface texture of the outer surface of the glove provides improved dry, wet or oil surface gripping characteristics;and said inner surface being: (i) provided with adhesively bonded cotton or rayon flock, whereby the cotton or rayon flock adhesively bonded to the inner surface of the glove provides improved skin moisture absorption and skin irritation resistance;(ii) provided with a layer of cured foam latex, whereby the layer of cured foam latex at the inner surface of the glove provides improved skin moisture absorption and skin irritation resistance;or (iii) adhesively bonded to an aramid fiber or steel wire knitted liner, whereby the adhesively bonded aramid fiber or steel wire knitted liner provides cut resistance to the latex glove.
  2. 5
A method of making a latex article with a geometrically defined surface texture, which method comprises:a. providing a tacky, polymeric coagulant coating (12) on a smooth former for dipping in an aqueous latex emulsion (21) comprising a water-soluble polymer, a polyglycol, a surfactant, and a coagulating salt;b. applying discrete coagulant particles (14) of selected size and distribution to the tacky, polymeric coagulant coating (12), wherein the discrete coagulant particles (14) are completely water-soluble, partially water- soluble, or completely waterinsoluble;c. drying the polymeric coagulant coating (12) with embedded discrete coagulant particles (14);d. applying at least one layer of latex on top of the polymeric coagulant coating (12) encapsulating embedded discrete coagulant particles (14);e. vulcanizing or curing the latex layer by heating the former with the latex layer;f. stripping and inverting the latex article to expose the discrete coagulant particles (14);and g. leaching or dissolving the discrete coagulant particles (14) in water or an appropriate solvent;whereupon a latex article with a geometrically defined surface texture is obtained.
  3. 9
The method of any one of claims 5 to 8, wherein in step (b.) said discrete coagulant particles (14) are applied to the palm and finger areas.
  4. 10
The method of any one of claims 5 to 8, wherein the polymeric coagulant coating (12) has a thickness in the range of 5 to 50 microns.
  5. 11
The method of any one of claims 5 to 8, wherein the water-soluble polymer is selected from the group consisting of poly N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (PVP), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyacrylic acid (PAA), polyacrylamide (PAC), and a copolymer or derivative of any of the foregoing.
  6. 16
The method of any one of claims 5 to 8, wherein the polyglycol is polyethylene glycol.
  7. 17
The method of any one of claims 5 to 8, wherein the polyglycol is polyethylene oxide/ polypropylene oxide copolymers.
