Apparatuses for renal neuromodulation

Abstract

Methods and apparatus are provided for renal neuromodulation using a pulsed electric field to effectuate electroporation or electrofusion. It is expected that renal neuromodulation (e.g., denervation) may, among other things, reduce expansion of an acute myocardial infarction, reduce or prevent the onset of morphological changes that are affiliated with congestive heart failure, and/or be efficacious in the treatment of end stage renal disease. Embodiments of the present invention are configured for percutaneous intravascular delivery of pulsed electric fields to achieve such neuromodulation.

CA 02583463 2011-12-09 CLAIMS l/We claim:1. Apparatus for renal neuromodulation, the apparatus comprising: an electric field generator;and a catheter comprising at least one electrode electrically coupled to the electric field generator;wherein the catheter is configured for percutaneous placement within renal vasculature in a patient for delivering an electric field to renal nerves while the apparatus is located proximate the renal vasculature wherein the catheter further comprises an expandable helical section configured to position the catheter in contact with an inner surface of a vessel wall of the renal vasculature, wherein the at least one electrode is at the expandable helical section, and wherein the pitch of the helix of the expandable helical section is variable to minimize circumferential overlap of adjacent treatment zones.
