Tumor treatment identification system

Abstract

An instrument is used to mark locations in tissue that define the boundary of a three-dimensional treatment zone. The position of the instrument is recorded by a tracking system and a treatment zone image is produced which depicts the treatment zone along with patient reference points also marked by the instrument. The treatment zone image is exported to a radiation treatment system which uses the patient reference points to align the treatment zone image with the patient and uses the treatment zone image to aim the radiation.

  1. 1
CA 02575759 2013-07-17 CLAIMS 1. A method for planning the treatment of a region in a patient, the steps comprising:a) establishing a set of patient reference points on or in the patient by moving an instrument relative to the patient and using a tracking system to record a location of a tip of the instrument at each patient reference point;b) producing a treatment zone image by moving the instrument over a portion of the patient and recording the location of the tip of the instrument using the tracking system so as to mark a set of treatment zone boundary points that defines a three-dimensional region in the patient that is to receive treatment;c) registering the treatment zone image with a frame of reference associated with a treatment system using the set of patient reference points;and d) displaying the registered treatment zone image to indicate where in the patient the treatment is to be directed.
  2. 7
The method as recited in any one of claims 1 to 6 in which step b) includes marking a second set of boundary points that define a second threedimensional region in the patient.
  3. 8
A system for producing a treatment zone image indicative of a region in a patient to receive treatment, which comprises:an instrument having a tip capable of being moved to different locations in the patient;a tracking system for recording the location of the tip of the instrument at the different locations in the patient as position data;means for storing patient reference points that are related to a coordinate system of the tracking system;means for storing the position data as a plurality of boundary points that define a contour surrounding a region of tissues in the patient to receive treatment;and means for producing a treatment zone image from the stored plurality of boundary points, the treatment zone image depicting the region of tissues to be treated and the stored patient reference points.
  4. 11
The system as recited in any one of claims 8 to 10 in which the means for producing a treatment zone image includes means for producing a three-dimensional image of a surface that passes through said stored plurality of boundary points.
  5. 12
The system as recited in any one of claims 8 to 11 in which the means for storing patient reference points includes means for designating position data produced by the tracking system as the patient reference points.
  6. 13
The system as recited in any one of claims 8 to 11 in which the means for storing patient reference points includes means for importing an image of the patient, means for registering the imported image with the tracking system, and means for storing the registered image as the patient reference points.
  7. 14
The method as recited in any one of claims 1 to 7 in which step b) includes marking a contour of a portion of the patient that includes the treatment zone.
