Seed tube for seed metering apparatus

Abstract

A seed tube for an agricultural implement having a seed metering mechanism for uniformly dispensing seeds. The seed tube defined an enclosed curved seed pathway extending between opposite ends of the tube. To promote control over the seeds passing through the tube, the tube has a smooth but decreasing cross-sectional configuration between the ingress and egress ends of the tube. The tube generally includes a front wall, a rear wall and a pair of side walls. The front wall is generally separated into an upper and lower portion. An opening in the front wall, which is provided to receive a monitoring device, is associated with the lower front wall portion. In addition, the lower front wall portion is stepped forward relative to the upper front wall portion. The enclosed seed pathway further includes a narrowed front edge extending in an upward direction from the egress end of the tube along some section of the front wall. The narrowed front edge enhances control over the seeds such that individual seeds passing through the tube and deposited to the ground have equidistant spacings between the seeds on the ground. The stepped forward arrangement for the lower front wall portion also allows a monitoring device to be used without disrupting the flow of seeds in the seed tube.

CA 02553530 1999-01-25 CLAIMS:1. A seed metering apparatus capable of periodically releasing seeds for deposit onto the ground comprising: a seed tube arranged in seed receiving relation relative to said seed metering apparatus, said seed tube comprising a hollow member, said hollow member having an elongated length between an ingress end in seed receiving relation relative to said seed metering apparatus and an egress end proximate to the ground, said hollow member having a front wall, a rear wall and a pair of side walls, said front wall having an upper portion having a lower end and a lower portion having an upper end, said upper end of said lower front wall portion being stepped forward relative to said lower end of said upper front wall portion, a monitoring apparatus to monitor seeds passing through said hollow member, said monitoring apparatus being associated with said lower front wall portion, and a section of said lower front wall portion having a narrowed forward edge extending upward from said egress end, said narrow forward edge comprised of at least two surfaces angularly diverging in opposite directions relative to each other from said forward edge to define a generally “V” shaped configuration, wherein seeds passing through said hollow member slide along said upper front wall portion and fall past said monitoring apparatus to then slide along said lower front wall portion to exit said hollow member through said egress area, and wherein said forward edge of said lower front wall portion serves to deaden seed bounce and rattle as the seeds pass through said hollow member without detracting from the speed of the seeds as the seed passes through said hollow member thereby enhancing controlled delivery of the seeds to the ground.
  2. 2
A seed metering apparatus comprising:a housing mounted to be moved over ground in a predetermined direction and having a hollow interior defining a hopper area wherein seeds are held, a rotary and apertured disk mounted within the hollow interior of said housing for conveying seeds from said hopper area to a seed discharge area under the CA 02553530 1999-01-25 ‘ 32 , influence of pressure differentials acting on said disk, and wherein the pressure differentials are blocked from acting on said disk in the region of said seed discharge area such that seeds are periodically released from said disk within the seed discharge area of the housing for deposit to the ground, and an elongated seed tube having an upper end arranged in a generally vertical orientation and in seed receiving relation relative to said seed discharge area and a lower end from which seeds are gravitationally discharged, said seed tube having a front wall, a rear wall and a pair of side walls, said front wall having an upper portion having a lower end and a lower portion having an upper end, a section of said lower front wall portion having a vertically disposed and narrowed front or forward edge, said front edge extending upwardly from said lower end of said tube and along a section of said lower front wall portion, said front edge comprising at least two surfaces extending in angularly and diverging rearward directions relative to each other from said front edge toward said rear wall, and a monitoring apparatus positioned at said upper end of said lower front wall portion, wherein said upper end of said lower front wall portion is stepped forward from said lower end of said upper front wall portion such that seeds discharged from said housing enter said upper end of said seed tube, pass through said seed tube by sliding along said upper front wall portion, falling past said monitoring apparatus to then slide along said lower front wall portion into said front edge to exit said hollow member through said lower end.
