Abstract

A pallet rack upright column protection device for the use in preventing and reducing destructive levels of kinetic energy of motion from occurring to a pallet rack upright. The device is made from an assembly of multilateral polymer based elastomeric materials that has a primary external component, a nd with a synergistic less dense internal component. The device attaches direct ly to the front and lateral sides of the lower section of a rack upright.</SDOA B>

    CA 02552289 2008-03-04 -32CLAIMS:1. A column protector device for protection of an upright column of a racking system, said column of a type being channel shaped in cross section and having a substantially rectangular front portion consisting of a front member, and first and second side members, said column protector device is arranged to clip onto said upright column in order to grasp said upright column;said column protector device comprising: a rigid substantially part cylindrical outer shell;and an inner liner shaped to fit within said outer shell;wherein said outer shell is configured to fit around said upright column such that the outer shell retains to said column in a self attaching manner without need for any additional fixings, and said outer shell surrounds the front member and partially surrounds the first and second side members, thereby protecting the front member and parts of the side members, and wherein in use said inner liner is retained between said outer shell and said column, and in which the inner liner comprises a substantially solid part cylindrical member having a substantially part cylindrical outer surface, and a substantially “U” shaped channel formed on an opposite side of said liner to said substantially cylindrical outer surface and in which, in use, said channel provides a flush interface between an inner profile of said inner liner and an external profile of said upright column in order for the inner liner to encapsulate a front face and portions of the first and second side members of said upright column.

    The column protector device as claimed in any one claims 1 to 5, wherein said outer shell comprises a tubular part cylindrical member having a pair of substantially parallel opposing edges, either side of a gap in said part cylindrical member.

    The column protector device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein said outer shell has a height in the range 30cm to 120cm. CA 02552289 2008-03-04 -349. The column protector device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein said outer shell has an external diameter in the range 10cm to 14cm.

    10. The column protector device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein said outer shell has a wail thickness in the range 7mm to 9mm.

    11. The column protector device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein said outer shell has a distance between opposing longitudinal edges in the range 5cm to 11 cm.

    12. The column protector device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 11, wherein said outer shell comprises a chamfered edge positioned at an end of said shell, between an upper face of said outer shell and an inner surface of said shell.

    13. The column protector device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein said outer shell is made from a resilient elastomeric polymer based material.

    14. The column protector device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 11, wherein said outer shell comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, polycarbonate, polyvinylchloride, polystyrene plastic and a mixture of plastics.

    15. The column protector device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein said outer shell is made from a high density polyethylene material.

The column protector device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 15, wherein said inner liner has a “U shaped channel, and wherein a maximum distance of an outer surface of the “U” shaped channel to the part cylindrical outer surface is in the range 2cm to 5cm. The column protector device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 16, wherein said inner liner comprises an elastomeric material which is relatively less dense than a material of said outer shell.

The column protector device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 17, wherein said inner liner comprises a material selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, polycarbonate, polyvinylchloride, polystyrene, natural rubber foam, synthetic rubber foam and a compressive composite material.

    19. The column protector device as claimed in any one claims 1 to 18, in which said inner liner comprises a closed cell SBR foam material.

The column protector device as claimed in any one claims 1 to 23, wherein said inner liner is configured such that, after receiving an impact, the inner liner promotes a repositioning of the whole column protector device to a position similar to a position of the column protection device before the impact occurred. The column protector device as claimed in any one claims 1 to 24, in which said outer shell, when fitted to said upright column, surrounds the front member, and partially surrounds said first and second side members thereby protecting the front member and parts of the side members from direct impact and partially surrounds each of the first and second side members, said outer shell also surrounding said inner liner, which resides, in use between a substantially part cylindrical inner surface of the outer shell, and an outer face of the front member, an outer face of the first side member and an outer face of the second side member.

    26. The column protector device as claimed in any one claims 1 to 25, in which said inner liner and said outer shell are slideable with respect to each other in a direction along a main central axis of said outer shell.

    27. The column protector device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 25, in which said inner liner is bonded to an inner surface of the outer shell, such that the inner liner is fixed relative to the outer shell and cannot slide relative to the outer shell.

The column protector device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 27, further comprising a polycarbonate outer sheath which fits outside the outer shell and which is selected such that the outer sheath shall only fail to crack under propagation from forces that would exceed the column protector device’s maximum designed impact tolerance.

The column protector device as claimed in any one claims 1 to 28, further comprising a polycarbonate insert member which is capable of being inserted between the column protector device and the front face of the upright column and which is capable of being slid out from such position for removal and capable of being CA 02552289 2008-03-04 -37re-inserted, for visual inspection purposes without need to remove the outer shell or inner liner from the upright column.

    30. The column protector device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 29, wherein said column protector device has greater ductility, impact resilience and persistence of shape than that of a metal rack component said column protector device is attached to.

    31. The column protector device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 30, configured for attaching to said upright column, without need for an integrated or independent fastening or securing mechanism or mechanisms, and without need for a bonding agent.
