Abstract

A physical keyboard includes a plurality of multi-functional keys with a reduced column QWERTY key arrangement overlaid with a numeric phone key arrangement for use in both text entry and telephony. Another physical keyboard includes a plurality of multi-functional keys having an array of alphabetic characters and an overlaid numeric array of numbers. A handheld mobile station has a first user interface having a standard alphabetic key arrangement and a second user interface having a numeric phone key arrangement.

A keyboard comprising: a plurality of keys and corresponding indicia, the indicia including alphabetic characters, numerals and functions, and each of the plurality of keys configured to cause data corresponding to the indicia to be entered in response to selection of the key;the plurality of keys are arranged in rows and columns;the rows comprise four rows in order from top to bottom: a first row, a second row, a third row and a fourth row;the columns comprise five columns in order from left to right: a first column, a second column, a third column, a fourth column, and a fifth column;the plurality of keys associated with the alphabetic characters is greater than nine and less than twenty-six keys and the alphabetic characters arranged according to a standard keyboard;the numerals being arranged according to a numeric arrangement of ITU Standard E.161 and at least partially overlaid on the plurality of keys associated with the alphabetic characters;the keys in the first row comprise a numeral 1 in the second column, a numeral 2 in the third column, and a numeral 3 in the fourth column;the keys in the second row comprise a numeral 4 in the second column, a numeral 5 in the third column, and a numeral 6 in the fourth column;the keys in the third row comprise a numeral 7 in the second column, a numeral 8 in the third column, and a numeral 9 in the fourth column, and keys in the fourth row comprise a in the second column, a numeral 0 in the third column, and a # in the fourth column;and one of the plurality of keys being associated with a space function, the key associated with the space function having a height that is greater than the height of the remainder of the plurality of keys.

    A keyboard comprising:a plurality of keys and corresponding indicia including keys associated with alphabetic characters corresponding to a standard keyboard layout array of letters A-Z and an overlaid numeric phone key arrangement corresponding to the numbers 0-9, with the alphabetic characters and overlaid numeric phone key arrangement being oriented in the same direction, said plurality of keys associated with alphabetic characters numbering fewer than 26, and further comprising at least one function key comprising a space key, with the space key having a height that is greater than the height of the remainder of said plurality of keys, and wherein each key is configured to cause data corresponding to the indicia on that key to be entered in response to the key being pressed.

    A keyboard configured for a handheld mobile communication device comprising:a plurality of keys arranged in a grid pattern having a plurality of rows and columns including a bottom row with each of the columns having left line of alignment and right line of alignment such that each key in the column is positioned in an area between the left and right lines, said plurality of keys being associated with indicia corresponding to letters A-Z, numbers 0-9, and at least one function, with the indicia being oriented in the same direction, wherein said plurality of keys associated with said letters A-Z number fewer than 26, wherein keys positioned in the bottom row have a top line of alignment and a bottom line of alignment, with an area positioned between the top and bottom lines of alignment, with one of said keys comprising an elongated key that extends outside of the area between the top and bottom lines of alignment, wherein the elongated key extends below the bottom line of alignment, and other keys positioned in said bottom row being contained within said top and bottom lines of alignment, and wherein each key is configured to cause data corresponding to the indicia on that key to be entered in response to the key being pressed.

    A keyboard configured for a handheld mobile communication device comprising:a plurality of keys arranged in a grid pattern having a plurality of rows and columns, with each of the rows having a top line of alignment and a bottom line of alignment such that each key in the row is positioned in an area between the top and bottom lines, with each of the columns having left line of alignment and right line of alignment such that each key in the column is positioned in an area between the left and right lines, said plurality of keys being associated with indicia corresponding to letters AZ, numbers 0-9, and at least one function, with the indicia being oriented in the same direction, wherein said plurality of keys associated with said letters A-Z number fewer than 26, wherein at least one of the plurality of keys extends outside the area between the top and bottom lines of alignment for the respective row, wherein said at least one key is associated with a function and a numeral, and wherein each key is configured to cause data corresponding to the indicia on that key to be entered in response to the key being pressed.

    A handheld mobile communication device with a physical keyboard, said device comprising:a housing with a plurality of keys located at a front surface of the housing;said plurality of keys comprising a first subset of at least twelve keys having indicia of letters A to Z, said letters being arranged in a standard alphabetic keyboard arrangement, and a second subset of keys having indicia of numerals 0 to 9, said numerals being arranged in a numeric phone key arrangement that is at least partially overlaid on said standard alphabetic keyboard arrangement;and said second subset of keys are differentiated, based on color, from keys of said first subset of keys that are not overlaid by said second subset of keys;wherein said physical keyboard comprises a total of twenty keys, with the keys being arranged in four rows and five columns;wherein one of a QWERTY, QWERTZ, AZERTY, and DVORAK array of letters is arranged in three of the four rows and said second subset of keys is associated with each of the four rows;CA 02552263 2013-03-05 wherein said four rows comprise in order a first, second, third and fourth row, and the five columns comprising in order a first, second, third, fourth, and fifth column;and wherein each key is configured to cause data corresponding to one of the indicia on that key to be entered in response to the key being pressed.

    A physical keyboard for a handheld mobile communication device comprising:a plurality of keys with corresponding indicia including keys simultaneously presenting associated alphabetic indicia and associated numeric indicia, said alphabetic indicia correspond to letters A-Z that are arranged in a QWERTY pattern and said numeric indicia correspond to at least numerals 1-9 that are arranged in an ITU Standard E.161 phone keypad pattern, at least some of said numerals and at least some of said letters are presented on the same keys, and wherein said keys that present alphabetic indicia number fewer than 26, wherein the numerals 1-9 are associated with keys in a first, third and fifth columns such that the columns containing numerals 1-9 are spaced from each other by one column width.

    A physical keyboard for a handheld mobile communication device comprising:a plurality of keys with corresponding indicia including keys simultaneously presenting associated alphabetic indicia and associated numeric indicia, said alphabetic indicia correspond to letters A-Z that are arranged in a QWERTY pattern and said numeric indicia correspond to at least numerals 1-9 that are arranged in an ITU Standard E.161 phone keypad pattern, at least some of said numerals and at least some of said letters are presented on the same keys, and wherein said keys with associated numeric indicia arranged in an ITU Standard E.161 phone keypad pattern are centered with respect to said plurality of keys, wherein the numerals 1-9 are associated with keys in a first, third and fifth columns such that the columns containing numerals 1-9 are spaced from each other by one column width.

    A physical keyboard for a handheld mobile communication device comprising:a plurality of keys with corresponding indicia including keys simultaneously presenting associated alphabetic indicia and associated numeric indicia, said alphabetic indicia correspond to letters A-Z that are arranged in a QWERTY pattern and said numeric indicia correspond to numerals 0-9 that are arranged in an ITU Standard E.161 phone 10 keypad pattern, at least some of said numerals and at least some of said letters are presented on the same keys, and wherein a key with which the numeral 0 is associated is also a space key associated with a space function, wherein the numerals 0-9 are associated with keys in a first, third and fifth columns such that the columns containing numerals 0-9 are spaced from each other by one column width.

    The physical keyboard for a handheld mobile communication device as recited in 20 claim 80, wherein keys associated with numerals 1-9 are arranged above the key associated with the numeral 0.
