Kidney dialysis

Abstract

Methods are disclosed for providing operational instructions to a hemodialysis circuit (10) having a dialysis filter (48) and a capability of operating according to a time-varying parameter such as variable ultrafiltration. According to the methods, entered are a desired time period, a target cumulative value of the parameter, such as target ultrafiltration volume, and a proposed time-varying profile of the parameter that is representable as a plot of coordinates in a region defined by an ordinate of values of the parameter and a time-based abscissa defining a profile cumulative value of the parameter. If the profile cumulative value is not equal to the target cumulative value, then the proposed time-varying profile is changed along the ordinate to make the cumulative values equal. The circuit (10) then operates according to the changed profile to achieve the entered target cumulative value within the time period.

CA 02547950 1993-11-12 78749-3E - 62 CLAIMS :1. A hemodialysis apparatus comprising: a dialysate-delivery system for supplying dialysate to a dialyzer, the dialysate-delivery system 5 comprising at least one unit selected from the group consisting of: (i) a dialysate-preparation unit, (ii) a dialysate-circulation unit, (iii) an ultrafiltrate-removal unit, and (iv) a dialysate-monitoring unit;and a user/machine interface operably connected to the 10 dialysate-delivery system, the user-machine interface configured to: (i) display a first screen including a first indicium corresponding to a first hemodialysis input parameter capable of being preset to vary over the course of treatment and a second indicium corresponding to a second 15 hemodialysis input parameter capable of being preset to vary over the course of treatment;(ii) display a second screen including a graphical representation of how the first hemodialysis input parameter is preset to vary over the course of treatment if the first indicium is selected;and 20 (iii) display a third screen including a graphical representation of how the second hemodialysis input parameter is preset to vary over the course of treatment if the second indicium is selected.

A hemodialysis machine comprising:at least one dialysate pump configured to move dialysate to a dialyzer;a blood pump configured to move blood to the 25 dialyzer;a numeric keypad;and a video screen and at least one processor configured to CA 02547950 1993-11-12 78749-3E - 66 (a) enable a total time and a cumulative ultrafiltration volume to be entered via the numeric keypad, (b) calculate a constant ultrafiltration rate from the cumulative ultrafiltration volume and the entered total time, (c) display the rate on the video screen, (d) enable a calculation of varying ultrafiltration rates according to a profile representing how ultrafiltration rates will vary over time to be made, (e) enable the constant calculated rate to be used so that the cumulative ultrafiltration volume can be removed, through the dialyzer, within or over the total time, according to the constant rate, or (f) enable the ultrafiltration profile to be used instead of the constant rate so that thereafter the cumulative ultrafiltration volume can be removed, within or over the total time, according to the varying ultrafiltration rates of the profile.
