Surgical clip applier

Abstract

A surgical clip applier and methods for applying surgical clips to a vessel, duct, shunt, etc., during a surgical procedure are provided. In one exemplary embodiment, a surgical clip applier is provided having a housing with a trigger movably coupled thereto and an elongate shaft extending therefrom with opposed jaws formed on a distal end thereof. The trigger is adapted to advance a clip to position the clip between the jaws, and to move the jaws from an open position to a closed position to crimp the clip positioned therebetween.

  2. 6
A handle assembly, comprising:a pawl rotatably disposed within a handle housing;and a trigger insert pivotally disposed within the handle housing and coupled to a trigger, the trigger insert including a first set of teeth adapted to ensure a full range of motion of the trigger from a fully open position to a partially closed position when the first set of teeth are engaged by the pawl, and a notch formed between an end tooth and the first set of teeth and adapted to allow movement of the trigger directly to the fully open position when the notch formed between the end tooth and the first set of teeth is engaged by the pawl, wherein the pawl is adapted to move from the notch past the end tooth to reach a fully closed position.
  3. 11
A method for applying a surgical clip, comprising:moving a trigger coupled to a ratchet mechanism in a first direction from a fully open position over at least one tooth to a partially closed position in which a pawl engages a notch formed in the ratchet mechanism, thereby partially closing a surgical clip positioned between opposed jaws formed on a distal end of a shaft extending from the handle housing;and CA 02543585 2013-10-09 moving the trigger from the partially closed position directly to the fully open position, in which the partially closed surgical clip positioned between the opposed jaws is released, the pawl pivoting in the notch to allow movement of the trigger from the partially closed position to the fully open position.
  4. 19
A handle assembly, comprising:CA 02543585 2013-10-09 a handle housing having a trigger movable in a first direction from a fully open position to a fully closed position, and a second direction from the fully closed position to the fully open position;and a pawl and ratchet disposed within the handle housing and operatively associated with the trigger, the pawl being pivotally disposed about a fixed pivot point with the housing and the ratchet having a notch positioned between a plurality of teeth and an end tooth;wherein, when the pawl is engaged with the plurality of teeth the ratchet limits movement of the trigger to the first direction, and when the pawl is disposed within the notch the ratchet allows the trigger to be selectively moved in both the first and second directions such that the trigger can move from a partially closed position directly to the fully open position without first being moved to the fully closed position.
  5. 24
A handle assembly, comprising:a pawl disposed within a handle housing and configured to rotate about a fixed pivot point within the handle housing;and a ratchet disposed within the handle housing and coupled to a movable trigger, the ratchet having a notch positioned between a plurality of teeth and an end tooth, and the ratchet being configured to move with the trigger relative to the handle housing such that the ratchet is in CA 02543585 2013-10-09 engagement with the pawl when the trigger is moved between the fully open position and the fully closed position;wherein the pawl and ratchet are configured to allow movement of the trigger from a partially closed position directly to a fully open position without first being moved to a fully closed position, and wherein, when the pawl is engaged with the plurality of teeth the ratchet limits movement of the trigger to a first direction, and when the pawl is disposed within the notch the ratchet allows the trigger to be selectively moved in both the first direction and a second opposite direction.
  6. 28
A handle assembly, comprising:a pawl disposed within a handle housing and configured to rotate about a fixed pivot point within the handle housing;and a ratchet disposed within the handle housing and coupled to a movable trigger, the ratchet having a notch positioned between a plurality of teeth and an end tooth, and the ratchet being configured to move with the trigger relative to the handle housing such that the ratchet is in engagement with the pawl when the trigger is moved between a fully open position and a fully closed position;wherein the pawl and ratchet are configured to allow movement of the trigger from a partially closed position directly to the fully open position without first being moved to the fully closed position, and wherein the plurality of teeth prevent rotation of the pawl to limit movement of the pawl to a first direction when the pawl is engaged with the plurality of teeth, and the notch allows free CA 02543585 2013-10-09 rotation of the pawl to allow selective movement of the pawl from the notch in the first direction and in a second opposition direction when the pawl is disposed within the notch.
  7. 32
A surgical clip applier, comprising:an elongate member having opposed jaws formed on a distal end thereof;a handle housing disposed on a proximal end of the elongate member;a trigger movably coupled to the handle housing and configured to move the jaws between a fully open position and a fully closed position;and a rotatable pawl and a ratchet disposed within the handle housing, the ratchet being coupled to the trigger and configured to move with the trigger against the pawl as the trigger moves the jaws between the fully open position and the fully closed position;wherein the ratchet is formed on a trigger insert disposed within the handle housing and having a portion extending into the trigger, the ratchet being configured to allow the trigger to move the jaws from a partially closed position, in which the ratchet is engaged with the pawl, directly to the fully open position without first moving to the fully closed position.
  8. 36
